Many people are against how the Bureau of Land Management is handling wild horses and burros. On Saturday, wild horse advocates stood in front of the Legislative building in Carson City to bring more attention to protecting these animals.

It’s a big rally out front of the legislative building all to save wild horses. Betty Retzer says wild horses helped her when she had breast cancer. “My horses were my salvation. I would go out and just with them and they’d come over and they’d put their heads on my shoulder and be there for me,” says Retzer, who is with Least Resistance Training Concept says.

Now, she wants to be there for the countless other horses that are roaming free. She says many like her, benefit from the friendship with horses through adoption. “We actually work with people so they can bond with their horses and get that horse to be the very best it can be,” Retzer says.

There were more than 100 wild horse advocates who wanted to get the message across to the public, the Bureau of Land Management, the Nevada legislature, and even the president that the horses need to be better managed. “The problem is we got a management system right now that’s costing an excess amount of money doesn’t seem to be really helping the horses in the range and we’ve got to stop and start fresh,” says Willis Lamm, president of Least Resistance Training Concept.

So, they decided to hold what they call a “Truth Rally” to save wild horses. They say there have been 78 deaths, which includes 30 aborted foals and continuing loses from the Calico roundup. “What everybody here would like to see is sort of a stop the music; let’s get down to real science and real facts,” says Lamm.

Kim Miller’s message to save wild horses is on her back. She says horses helped her friend with special needs. “She said if it wasn’t for her horses and she has autistic needs, that she probably would have killed herself,” Miller says.

It’s comfort many need from these horses and that’s why so many people say they’re trying to save them.

  1. In some ways, the state agencies in Nevada have wrecked more havoc on our mustangs.

But I’m positive the mustangs could care less as to what human is abusing them (pick you poison); all they know is their families and freedom have been destroyed.

That Lesperance is real piece of work.

  2. It is wonderful that the LRTC is involved. I visit their website often. They are a powerful resource for people from the area who would like to adopt a wild horse but might need some support. Kudos to them for being there for the horses and for all they do!

  3. This may sound obtuse to some, but this isn’t just about our equines, wild or domestic. This is about incompetence, unfair application of government effort and funds to maintain the cruel, opportunistic status quo and special interest.

I don’t care if we are talking health care, food safety, banking (credit cards, mortgages) or right to work….this is about changing the status quo. And there ain’t nothin’ harder than changing the status quo……especially in resource management and particularly, agriculture.

Keep hitting the reps with the facts in your calls, emails and letters.

And remember, don’t ever give up….never, ever give up. We have morality and right on our side and special interest can only spend so much money to keep us down, shift the debate(PR lies), buy politicians until they realize their profit margin is declining.

    • D, yes, agree… but it has been done and it must be done again. The depression changed farming practices and water usage. The allowable yesterday shall be the illegal of tomorrow because priorities and ethics evolve. The cattlemens’ West has cost too much and those 27,000 small ranchers may need public grazing but the big corps need to be taken off the public dollar and land. If we are to develop alternative energy why have we not been working within and retrofitting schools, hospitals and public building, thus creating jobs and insuring these institutions keep functioning?? Where is the planning that comes from communities and not profiteering multinational corporations? Why do they only listen to the damn lobbyists in DC? They do not have the approval of the majority of Americans to be the forefront of the future. mar

Here’s the problem as I see it: Mega corps not only suck off the government teat as revenue and a so-called jobs provider, while they are suckling they are also utilizing tax deferrments, perks under the threat that they will remove jobs…which they have been doing for the last decades (20+). All the while they pay into PACS, etc to buy the time that they need to totally divest themselves of worker, environmental and service/product accountablity here in the US…they can’t shift their asses fast enough from us and toward Asia because of population and population education acumen. In other words, there is no moral obligation to their product, workers or consumer. Their posturing is always about profits and opportunity…not quality of life.

Too bad the horse whackers (Wallis, Stenholm, Abbey, Salazar, etc) that buy into the Cavel and Natural Valley myths don’t understand that they are also destroying local economies, themselves and the power of the US economy when they support horse slaughter for human consumption. Or maybe these “patriots” do??????

    • Yes, and this fear of jobs leaving is still very present. The tax deferments could be stopped but the cycle goes round. We give way at every corner to something that benefits the Big and not the Little. The middle class has been hit so hard they are scrambling to survive. Sustainability grows without any encouragement from the Gov. though states will all be the better for it. Those we elect seem to disappear from our midst and become some lobbyist prone defectors. Where is the loyalty of Buy American, Build American now that we need it and pursuing it will lesson shipping and dependence on oil, foreign and domestic? I thought all the ships were going to get fitted with the mega sails and save fuel? What do any of theses entities do but want tax breaks and profits while making messes of the environment and getting out of cleaning it up?? The mire is so deep we are not getting any meaningful progress done where it is screaming for our attention.

yeah, I do agree with you, ‘D’… mar

      • mar: “Where is the loyalty of Buy American, Build American now that we need it and pursuing it will lesson shipping and dependence on oil, foreign and domestic?” Great point! In defense of President Obama (something I don’t do very often) he tried to push BUY AMERICAN when he first got to DC. He was chastised by our “allies”, and got very little support to help Americans keep their jobs and slow imports of goods and services we could get domestically. I still want to know why U.S. auto plants were closed on American soil while those in Mexico and Canada were left open? Why was stimulus money and incentives dolled out without buy American stipulations? We are one of the few countries in the world that could be totally self sustaining and ‘green’. Why aren’t we?

      • kas, I remember that and China felt we were being a threat to imply we need to something for our selves, internally. I think going for sustainability is the best we can do as individuals. Then we do as we have been, speaking up for the mustangs and burros and what we believe in. We will look out for America when the Gov. has its hands tied. May be they will catch up to us one day. Sure would be nice. mar

  5. I am very disgusted as to the way the BLM in Nevada and Montana and everywhere they are in the word of managing the wild horses.I’d like to put them in pens and treat them the way they treat one of Gods Creations these magnificent horses and burro’s.They are inhumane, crueland plain out mean.God made prey and the preditors for a reason and man doesn’t need putting their two cents into managing these wild horses and burro’s.Between the weather, wild mountain lion and etc.the wild horse bands are very well managed. What needs to happen stop the cattle free grazing for a profit for the BLM,stop the use of the public ranges for gas and oil companies, give the wild horses back the land that was intended for them.Turn the wild horses lose and return them to the ranges where they were born and let them live their lives out as God so intended them to.It is our taxpayers money that is supporting this outragious treatment of these beautiful animals.I think th e BLM is heartless and have no conscience at all.Need to ban them from every state in this U.S.A.,let them go to a country where they don’t care what happens to their horses and burro’s,let alone a humane being, because they are greedy people, and they should be ashamed of themselves.TURN THE WILD HORSES LOSE NOW,while we still have them.So our childrens, children can see them and know about them and not by reading about them. And I’m suer the BLM doesn’t want the public to see what they’re doing to these horses because the public would probably run them out of town on a rail.

  6. Here’s bit of news that I found on another forum site regarding another proposed roundup. The BLM Rock Springs and Rawlins, Wyoming offices are requesting public comments on the plans to gather EXCESS wild horses from the Adobe Town and Salt Wells Creek Herd Management Areas which are located in the south central part of Wyoming.
They say to either mail or hand deliver your comments to the address of 280 Hwy 191 North, Rock Springs, Wyoming 82901. You can also email, (might be good idea to do both), to Rock_Springs_WYMail@blm.gov and please include “Adobe Town & Salt Wells Creek HMAs Scoping Comments” in the subject line in both the hand mail and email. Not sure where you would need to go to find more info on this proposed gather, but maybe one of you know more about it than I do right now and can use that info to assist in the comments that are submitted.

I HAVE A DREAM. THIS IS WHAT I WROTE TO CBS CHANNEL 2 IN CARSON CITY AFTER THEY QUOTED ME IN THERE ARTICLE ON THE TRUTH RALLY IN CARSON.

    Feb 22, 2010

To help Nevada and the USA from going bankrupt, this would be my dream.

Stop President Obama from handing out 60 million dollars of our tax money that the BLM wants to spend on the harvesting our wild equine illegally and sending them to their deaths. . Reinstate the Annie act of 1971 permanently, Take the failed wild equine management away from the BLM due to conflict of interest. Lets give the wild equines back the land they were illegally taken from and put them on the endanger species list.
Open a state and or national park for the wild equines in different locations in the USA, or add them to parks already exisiting, for Americas people to enjoy. There would be a museum for the wild equine on how they shaped the USA. There would be viewing area to see the wild horse’s running free. There would be a adoption center, a rescue center, volunteer center, onsite equine vetranarian, education center and research center, school of horsemanship. The center would have summer programs for inter-city kids and adults to stay and volunteer. There will be horse camping and trails, picnic areas, places to eat and lodge. as well as a full blown wild equine training and riding facility for all. Special needs therapeutic riding, recovering drug attacks, abused childeren, suicide survivors, recovering alcoholics, orphans, kids on drugs, sexually abused people, cancer patients, the list is endless. Billions of groups and organizations would benefit from these parks.

Wild equines give people confidence, wild equines give stability, wild equines give people love, wild equines give people hope, wild equines give people faith, wild equines heel people, wild equines save lives. wild equines for the people. Wild equines ask for nothing in return.

quote: Trace our present day’s strength to its source and you’ll find that man’s pathway to glory. is strewn with the bones of a horse.

It was only less then 100 years ago that horses were mans everything, We owe them the opportunity of life.
    Thanks for reading my letter,
    Sincerely, Kimberly Miller
