Advocates to Voice Concerns Over BLM Cruelty

Houston (SFTHH) – The Obama Administration’s Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will be holding a meeting in Phoenix, AZ March 10-11 2011 allegedly to discuss their failed Wild Horse and Burro strategy. This is the perfect opportunity for the Wild Horse Advocacy Movement to not only be heard but to be a physical presence in representation of the rapidly disappearing great American Wild Horse.
HfH Advisory Council is joining the Cloud Foundation in a calling to arms across the nation for wild horse advocates to rally at this meeting either in person or electronically. Volunteer Director of the Cloud Foundation Ginger Kathrens will be present as will be wild horse advocates R.T. and Terry Fitch from the HfH Advisory Council and many others. Collectively they ask you to stay tuned for further information and announcements but ensure that the dates of March 10th and 11th are circled on your calendar as this is our opportunity to speak out, for the horses, against the deadly and unnecessary BLM stampedes that have devastated the long standing native wild horse herds across the U.S. west.
Our main and simple message is to call for a moratorium on the roundups until science and verified data can be applied in an effort to tell us how many horses remain in the wild and exactly how many are held in holding. We need to put the brakes on this reckless and bloody horse harvesting machine before there are no longer any viable herds remaining on our public lands.
The meeting itself will be held at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel at 340 N. 3rd Street, Phoenix, AZ 85004. Currently the staff of the Cloud Foundation is looking into potential options for advocate accommodations.
Public comments will be heard on the morning of Friday the 11th with registration commencing at 8:30 AM. A printed text of the comment to be made must be submitted at that time.

I’m going to try to attend…depends on dog and horse sitter options. I love those animals and the farm life, but it sure is difficult to get away for a few days.

Until these animals are given true protection and their Congressionally mandated consideration, freedoms and space…..WE WILL NOT GO AWAY!
Those lands and resources are OURS, not yours. You work for us….not the other way around.
BTW…you are running out of equines to abuse; ergo your jobs. Can’t wait for the day.

Just started a new job and doubt they’ll give me time off, but really would like to be there in support of the horses. Key for me would be accommodations that we can share to keep costs down. Also, ALL orgs need to be involved and make a stand. Time is running out. 2011 will be a deadly year for our horses.

Just a thought on this…having been to a BLM Advisory Board meeting (Arlington 2009)..spending time and $$ to have 2 minutes to speak…and listening to articulate advocates like Ginger Katherns and Hope Ryden…and many others with input…only to be told at the end of the meeting by Don Glenn..”Well, I haven’t heard any good input or solutions said here today…”………and now knowing that several of the BLM Advisory members are sitting in on expired terms…..and they really have no power, nor are they on the side of the horses….it is a paid trip for them…..And as I have stated before…I BELIEVE THE BLM ADVISORY BOARD MEETINGS ARE A SHAM TO LEAD PEOPLE INTO BELIEVING THAT THEY(THE BLM) REALLY CARE WHAT WE THINK. Again could the time and money being put into going to a BLM Advisory Board meeting be better spent? When I read how folks will take off work, get rooms, spend $$ on fuel…..I have to question some of this. Just something to consider. Maybe by NOT going there, it will signal that we have NO RESPECT for THEM. They obviously have NO RESPECT for US. Please, anyone out there that has seen positive results come from going to a BLM Advisory Board meeting, enlighten me……

NO, NO. They would love us to stay away. We know they are biased, to say the least, but media will be there, and we can’t let them just hear one side.

I totally agree that they will not listen and they could give a damn. The meetings have ben a sham. They are required and the board has little or no power or influence. But the only time we get advocates together is when we have one of these unproductive meetings… this means we get together to meet, talk, plan, question and present any ideas we can use to keep up this fight… just between us. I WOULD PREFER WE WERE SURE ENOUGH AND BOLD ENOUGH TO CALL OUR OWN MEETING AND SET IT UP FOR OUR CONVENIENCE AND MAKE IT ECONOMICAL AND HAVE TALKS, FILMS AND PRESENTATIONS. But because we are poor we are going when BLM calls. I have attempted to get people interested in a real meeting of the advocacy last Spring. I was told to wait.
Positive results in going to Denver last summer was I met and talked to advocates, aside from several friends, for the first time. It was not the workshop I went to that mattered but the entire time was with advocates. It was worth it to me to go. We proved we could work together on short notice and within enemy territory. We do not get many chances to have any experiences as most of us, the majority of the time are sitting at a computer at home. We have shared insights and shared goals. But we need to meet eye to eye. Doing so advances our abilities to work and understand one another. mar

I agree totally with Golde on the real impact of anything the advocates do at these sham advisory board meetings. The BLM does not care AT ALL what the public thinks. In my opinion, we are wasting our time, breath, and money by flocking to something that is just a facade. The Denver advisory board meeting last June, as well as the ones in Reno in December 2009 and in DC in September 2009 are other cases in point of the BLM’s intention of just keeping up appearances of “listening to the public” when in fact they have been observed to be falling asleep during the two minutes each advocate is allotted to speak. What’s more, written statements of what advocates are going to say have to be submitted–to the BLM–and approved(!) before the two minutes are granted. In the Dec. 2009 Reno meeting, the BLM admitted having received over 10,000 letters–that they didn’t read.
I know that yesterday Brogan Horton had posted that Dan Burton had put out a call for advocates to slam the BLM with comments…several of us wrote Brogan immediately to make sure she made it plain to Congressman Burton that that has been happening for years and has not been working, that something else needs to happen because the BLM just shuts the public opinion out and goes on about its dastardly deeds regardless. They need reining in from a higher power, and there aren’t too many of those–Congress, the Federal Courts, and the President (we know Salazar is 100% complicit with the BLM and a total lost cause for any living thing, so forget the Secretary of Interior).
Wouldn’t our time, efforts, and money be better spent on continuous targeting of Congress and support of the ongoing court cases against the BLM? The BLM does not and will not listen, plain and simple.
At the Denver meeting last June, an advocates’ rally was canceled because there wasn’t going to be any press coverage. I don’t know what the story was on that, but it would be good to know for future reference, and especially if there is a rally planned for Phoenix.
I don’t want to discourage people from doing what they think will help, but I hate to see people throwing their time and money away when there could be other ways to better spend both.

There are many good reasons why We need to meet in Phoenix, since this is where the action is with BLM and the advocacy, for 2 days.
Please believe and understand we should be having our own meetings. There are people making decisions and moving on projects that many of us have no information on. The internet is Not secure and maybe some phones are not either.
Come to Phoenix and meet the advocacy there and learn what we need to do and how you can help. mar

Golde and Nancy, you both have some very good points. It would cost me over $500 just to fly there from KY so it’s out. Our comments are ignored too but hopefully are for the record. Unless we had a huge rally we would be ignored by the press also. Maybe we need more pressure on Congress and ro ask for a Congressional investigation of the DOI/BLM. It seems some of the Republicans would be glad to do that especially since the budget is such a hot issue.

Ride sharing is good. And so is room sharing. But we need a way to sign up and know who is who. Too many pro slaughter folks here disguising themselves as something else.
Also BLM says we get 3 mins to speak our minds. Remember how last June they suddenly cut it to I think it was 1 min–possibly 90 secs.
Just know that what we are hearing today is NOT WHAT YOU’RE GONNA GET IN AZ. from the BLM.
However, I think going if you can is important. They may not listen to us but that’s sorta ok. Because we the impetus that is gaining our numbers will be held up in the House and then Congress and they may choose to listen. And even if you can’t go but can join lighting a candle for instance during the rally time that too is sending a message.
RT do you have any suggestions on how we can get each others email and so forth, I know you have access but that it isn’t made public. Is there a way someone could have this access and make up a spreadsheet or something. Some way for us to share our info without the world seeing it…

DO NOT allow them to limit the time for speaking to something like what you said. We have the right to be heard by our government. Most give you five minutes. If everyone keeps talking over their one minute warning, they might just have to listen for a change. A real change.

There are enough of us to cover all of the bases. Those that feel the need to gather and meet, as well as participate in a Peaceful Demonstration, can be at the meeting. The biggest downside will be having to sit through it.
The rest can stay back at the Ranch, keep the ball rolling and stand watch.

Barbara, there have already been requests for a Congressional investigation–I think Cindy McDonald (American Herds)–or was it from Vicki Tobin or Laura Allen at the Equine Welfare Alliance??– called for one last year–and I don’t know whatever happened to that. Maybe R.T. knows. Not that we couldn’t put pressure on for the already existing requests, or put in new ones, but it would be good if things were coordinated so we’re not tripping over our own duplications
It just seems that now we can see dents being made along Congressional and legal routes, that maybe these are better places to put our energy rather than wasting it and our financial resources on the clinically deaf ears of the BLM. (I’m sure they love the idea that advocates go to these scam meetings, fruitlessly spending the money that might otherwise be put to use in ways that would result in actually stopping them (the BLM) from their continued ravaging of the wild horses.)

I and my advocate friends are putting our energy and funds behind the people who are doing and getting results; Laura Leigh and Grass Roots Horse and RT and Terry with the H4H Advisory Board and Cloud. Newer smaller groups have our support also. But we are working in a vacume and out of real time most days. Meeting for real is for US and not for BLM. Screw BLM. mar

Getting on the same page and directing our efforts to this can be accomplished and well appreciated if we get together and Talk about it! No matter what happens it will still be the strong and the active who will come away with more direction and inspiration than others. It is worth our while to come together. I think we need more opportunities to do this this year than just Phoenix. It gives us focus. It will also help those who want to learn more and can do more if given direction in real time by real people. mar

For those that can make it–how about a Workshop? There must be some Mom and Pop, locally owned restaurant there where everyone could gather, eat and collaborate. Direct some revenue towards the small business community and at the same time, conduct business.

Nancy, some of us have said there needs to be a Congressional investigation now for years, but I don’t know that any one ever got to actually officially ask a Congressman for one. Does anybody know? I do not mean a GAO investigation.
Also the 2 year study being done is just another ploy to act like the BLM is doing something and by the time it’s over it will be too late for the mustangs . JMHO
The roundups need to stop now.

I have a long standing annual event during this weekend, but I am still mulling over going. I really agree with Mar Wargo about the value of meeting face to face. I believe that there is something very powerful when people with passion meet together. I would love to meet other advocates.
I am not concerned about what the BLM thinks of me or anything I say at a forum like this. I want to look at them—I want to see their eyes, study the lines on their faces. I want to see how they interact with each other, and then the advocates. I have a sense of who these people are, formed mostly through reports of what they have done and failed to do.
On the other hand, like some of the rest of you, I can also see the value of using the money for other purposes such as donating to the people who are consistently on the front lines. As I say this, I think one of the advantages of meeting as a group would be to discuss fund raising possibilities. Find out what has been done and what has worked, and what has not been tried, but might be worth pursuing.

Yes, this is a question I have for the advocacy… how to raise money or get formal grants and be sure to cover the needs of the most active pursuits. Beyond saving the wild ones, we need to have goals and it will all take funds. This is a lifetime commitment for many of us. mar

I agree, I would like to meet some of the people from Colorado. As I stated in another post I live a few blocks from the Colorado BLM and it is just across the street from a McDonalds. Last week I was stopped at the stop light clear back to the bigmac and who just happens to be coming up their steps to go across to Mcdonalds but 7 BLM men, walked right in front of my van. I had a stop wild horse round-ups sign in my window- they gave me a dirty look . Not a real impressive group I might add. But I will bet they hadn’t seen that before.

Perhaps we should boycott the inside meeting and just hold a loud rally outside. Can’t believe people spend time and money (especially in this economy) to have the BLM start shutting them up at the 1 minute mark. Either that or go to the meeting and ignore there ridiculous 3 minute rule. If comments take a day and a half, they need to allow for it.

Again…..I did get up in Arlington (2009) after all the advocates spoke…and called them (BLM) on changing from 3 min. to 2 minutes after we all traveled so far to speak….they do not care…they DO NOT CARE….they are a voluntary group, being paid for their travel and accommodations!…..I think we should not give them the time of day………….and spend our time and $$ where it is most advantageous….NOT WITH THESE PEOPLE>>>>>they are a distraction……if the advocates want to meet and discuss things…that is what the internet can do…..NOT WASTING TIME AND $$ to go to these meetings!!!…DO WHAT YOU WANT ADVOCATES …BUT MEASURE THE WORTH OF YOUR TIME…..THE POWER OF THE MEDIA IS WHERE YOU SHOULD FOCUS YOUR ATTENTION…..I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR 7 YRS….FOR WHAT IT IS WORTH.

Im with you Golde, The BLM is a waste of precious time for our Mustangs, the BLM always has diversions, while we are talking to the wall at the meeting , they will be Unmercilouisfully rounding up Our Mustangs…………………in their usual horrorfest style……………………………..Our Mustangs need us where will do our best for them, not talking to those people who will not listen………….Their trickery is only excided by their treachery……………………………….

I like savethewildhorses’ idea for where to meet in Phoenix for those advocates who chose to go–that would make a bigger statement than again cow-towing to the BLM’s ridiculous meeting rules. Keep in mind that this is a meeting of the BLM “advisory board” (half of which are there even though their terms have expired)…I don’t know how many, if any, of them are actually BLM employees–they only “advise,” don’t run anything. But I like that idea of having a loud meeting outside, while refusing to go in and play stool pigeons yet one more time.

They don’t care what we say. They won’t do anything with it either and half are on their way out as soon as Abbey announces his new picks. And they never advise for the benefit of the horses. It might make a stronger statement if everyone refuses to even acknowledge their sham of a board. Also wondering why you have to submit your comment in advance? What if I don’t know until I get there what my comment will be?

Would it be a more powerful way to make a “statement” to have only one person deliver the statement to the BLM while the others advocates attending could meet each other at a pre-determined meeting place to protest the BLM and its refusal to cooperate with the public?. An anti-BLM Advisory Meeting could be publicized ahead of time. If no advocate shows at the BLM meeting then they could interpret that as a stamp of approval.

If anyone remembers the ‘Workshop’ BLM put on in Denver last year.. Yes.. It was a great way to meet other advocates but, does anyone remember what went on while advocates were meeting?
BLM pulled a fast one and went on a ‘spree’ rounding up horses when it was said there would be no roundups…
It was like, no one was watching the ‘chicken coop’ and the ‘fox’ took over.
I can’t remember which HMA they went after.. (old age?), but I do remember it.
Don’t get me wrong, I think the more people that show up, the better but it scares me too…

HOLD UP EASY BOOTS AND WAVE THEM AT THE BOARD TO EXPRESS THE HORSES’ DISPLEASURE AT THE BOARD’S VERSION OF “DEMOCRACY.” USE THE REST OF YOUR TIME THERE TO MEET AND COALESCE. THESE CAN BE A FORM OF WHAT ARE CALLED “TEACH-INS.” PEOPLE CAN BE EDUCATED; NEXT ACTION CAN BE DISCUSSED. THERE ARE A MYRIAD OF TASKS WHICH CAN BE DEVELOPED AND UNDERTAKEN. CONGRESS WILL BE SEEING THIS TOO, BELIEVE ME. BIG, VOCAL, INTELLIGENT TURN OUT — WILL MAKE AN IMPACT IN CONGRESS AS WELL. CHOOSE SEVERAL OF THE MOST INFORMED AND REASONABLE OF THE SUPPORTERS TO BE SPOKES PERSONS, AND EVERYONE ELSE BE READY WITH ONE OR TWO FACTS THAT HAVE BROUGHT YOU THERE.

YOU CAN DO THIS FOLKS. A DEMONSTRATION AT THE MEETING, A COUNTER MEETING, AND YOUR OWN PLANNING SESSION FOR FUTURE ACTION, ACCOMPANIED BY STATEMENTS, CAN BE ANOTHER SIGNAL TO DOI AND CONGRESS THAT ROUNDUPS AND REMOVALS ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE AS IN THE PAST. YOU CAN DO IT ALL.

From what I have been told much of this is in place. Someone took ideas and made some decisions. We expect people to do what they came for; attend and comment or demonstrate and there will be some special stuff… I think those who come are wanting to hook up with people and projects and share ideas. I am not hearing people want to come to learn basic things… those coming pretty much are on the same page. I would have to call this a war counsel more than a workshop, folks. It is about time, too. This is a meeting to Celebrate our Wild Horses and Burros and that is why I am going; to ask some questions and share ideas and plan action and to tell the world these wild ones are needing help and not to believe BLM.

I was thinking the same thing Nancy, it is a waste of time and money, I think we should do another protest in Washington and we need more than 100 people. The BLM is pissed about their budget and they will start saying they can’t afford the horses in holding, like they did in 2008. The mysterious 33,000. The BLM don’t like what we have to say, and will not let any of us talk for any length of time, they will give us half assed answers We should spend our money getting billboards up for the Wild and Slaughter…Angel Acres is doing it, PA, MD, GA and another one is going up in Florida. They need to go up in every State.

I have a list of hotels in Phoenix, where some of us are sharing rooms. I will be at the La Quinta on Black Canyon & Thomas road, the rooms are double beds for $65 a night. If anyone wants the list of hotels, please let me know.
I went to the Denver meeting last year, & I was a total newbie at that time. It boosted my confidence by meeting with all the advocates there, & it also boosted my moral, in believing that we actually can do things if we stand strong together. It is a wonderful feeling to be with the people that are so intelligent & listen to them speak for the horses. I met Mar there, Pam Nickoles, Jaime Johnson, Linda Hanick, Laura Leigh, Ginger, Willis Lamm, Deniz Bobol, Carla Bowers, Carol Walker, Craig Downer & Elyse whom I had met in Vegas & many many more. Made a decision then & there to stay in the fight, which if I hadn’t gone I might not have made it this long. If you can make it, you will be glad you did & that you had the chance to meet the wonderful people in person that are in front of this fight.
There is nothing like the feeling of being in the same room with these people, talking to them & it will definately make you feel the strength of them.
Yes, the BLM (Advisory Board) may not move on anything we have to say, but it sure as hell makes you feel good that you were there & you took a stand, whether they do anything or not.
