Natural Product?

Horses are an important part of our history…We built a Nation on their back…conquered and tilled the land with them, fought and won wars with them, created the first postal and transportation system with them.  —   Are we now going to slaughter them for foreign consumption?
Discussing the plight of horses and the legislation regarding horse slaughter, are:

  • Madeleine Pickens,  Philanthropist Businesswoman, dedicated to protect wild Mustangs, by creating an eco-sanctuary that would be good for horses, taxpayers, and a boost for tourism in Nevada
  • Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, taking a leading role in animal protection, and law reform that  targeting inhumane practices
  • R.T. Fitch, Co-founder and President of the Wild Horse Freedom Federation and the author of “Straight from the Horse’s Heart: A Spiritual Ride through Love, Loss and Hope
  • Rep. Sue Wallis, Wyoming State Legislator, a proponent and advocate for Horse Slaughter plants, that will end unnecessary pain and suffering for abandoned, starving horses, being processed under the U.S. Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.  The plants will create jobs, and increase revenue for the community. She estimates between 120,000 to 200,000 horses will be killed annually for human consumption .

  1. Dear Sasha and PBS/NPR Radio,

Animals are often protected more when
Someone can make a living while helping them.
    Ecotourism could possibly help —
just like safaris where people shoot wild animals
with cameras and not guns. It is also called Cultural Tourism because the horse is so much a part of America’s history throughout many centuries.

Maybe more tourism groups could look at that as a way of making the public aware of the plight of the wild mustangs and burros with fun travel adventures into the “Old West”. It could guarantee both protection of the environment and the animals. More people could actually keep an eye out for the herds and any abuse hidden behind the holding pens if that was a stop along the “Cultural Highway”. My friend, the late Jonathan Meigs, was a visionary who wrote about this concept. He loved to travel throughout America and the world. The West in conestoga wagons was one of his favorite adventures and safaris to see wild animals was another.

In my book, “Wind, Wild Horse Rescue,” I encourage the American public to protect the wild horses in order to see them as living treasures and not just in the movies and that future generations will be able to love them like I do. I have over 100 of my sketches and paintings throughout the story of this book. The NHSPCA is using it to educate kids and adults about the wild horses. Declan Gregg gave a signed copy to President Obama for me.

I also set aside a portion of the proceeds of sales of my book for equine rescue organizations. I am happy to use my artwork for a great cause.

Best wishes to stop the slaughter and the equine holocaust.

    Sincerely,
Denise F. Brown, author/illustrator and equine artist and animal advocate

    • Thank you Denise, for providing this wonderful, educational and inspiring book about our living treasures..our wild horses. I’m sure it will be a huge success, because it presents a win-win for all. I admire your willingness to share a portion of the proceeds from the book, in helping our equine rescue organizations. The book will make an excellent gift, which I plan on purchasing. (-: Good luck and thank you.

  3. To: Madeleine Pickens, Wayne Pacelle, and R. T. Fitch — Let Sue Wallis have it with both barrels. She needs to be shown for what she is — a disgusting individual with no scrubbles, compassion, or brains. She needs to be shown to be out for all the $$ that she can get off the backs of our beautiful four legged icons — both wild and domestic. It’s about time that she gets it coming from all sides so she is afraid to walk out her door because she would be mobbed with people protesting her idiotic opinions. This individual is warped, warped, in her thinking and she better get help. Although I don’t know if anyone would want to have anything to do with her — even treating her. Individuals like this are one of a kind and “Thank God” we don’t have an over abundance of them — I think we, the horse advocates, would be overwhelming to the other side if we got together to show we will stand our ground until all our wild horses and domestic horses get what they deserve – for the wild ones – to be with their families on our ranges and for the domestic ones – to be loved and cared for by a loving family that appreciates them for their companionship and all that goes with having a horse to enjoy.

  4. Good luck tomorrow RT, Madeleine, and Wayne with the show. I would hope that the truth, common sense and compassion you will represent for our equines will out- smart anything she has to say. We know where she’s coming from…let’s hope the public will realize that, as well. This is all the more reason we have to educate and make known, to as many people as possible, the real tragedy that’s been inflicted on our wild ones and the inhumane treatment all horses will endure, if slaughterhouses return.

  5. Best wishes, equine warriors.

Some food for thought (pun intended), please note the states riding to the rescue:

Please also note ALL the players in this one article. It is relative to the purity and safety of ALL our food and what we import and most especially export. Just for a giggle, and I won’t post it here but Justice Scalia brought up food and broccoli in the justices’ probing of the health care law…..the broccoli argument is ridiculous…BUT he went on to say if certain parts of laws are “essentially” gutted, they are no longer law. Ahhhh…my point about the 1971 ACT and what Congress, Presidents and the judiciary have allowed to happen. Thank you Justice Scalia…….where were you when Burns bashed the 1971 Act or soon thereafter???????

  6. Good Gravy…SS bailed again in the last 10 minutes????? Seems something happened to Pickens too….so maybe it is a commo/network issue.

Good job RT….and the callers. I still find it amazing that humans, citizens of the US are baffeled by this issue.

Saw a snippet about “Luck”, Santa Anita and deaths of race horses in CA on the CBS Morning Show. P…..U…..

Good news? It got national attention. Bad News? Too little time and does not discuss drugs and garbage level races, trainers,HCHS, etc.

  7. Really enjoyed the link to be able to listen to the radio broadcast. How could you hurt Wallis’s feelings like that so that she hung up — haha, I loved it. Thanks to everyone that took part to bring this awful situation to the attention of more people. I know this is being silly, but I could wish that whoever wins the 540 million lottery will take that money and lobby politicians and buy out the BLM and take it over so that horses and not rich men’s cattle can stay on their land.

    • Agreed about the Mega Millions…it is a promise from me. 😉

The important issue is to remain vigilant about ALL welfare and pay attention to the industries and governments that allow this kind of disgusting, immoral death.

      • Denise: If I win the MEGA, I’ll also need your help. You will see my intentions on a reply to Barbara and Lynette. THis is my desire to have the money to make life miserable for the BLM, the killer buyers, and the auction houses that have been prying on our wild horses and burros. We do need to take over the welfare ranchers with grazing rights and this would definitely start our new homes for our saving the 46,000 horses now in feedlots. May our prayers be answered. I’ll quit my job tomorrow and start the ball rolling. R.T. and Habitat for Horses founder, and Madeleine Pickens, I will need your help right away. Let’s get rolling and get r done if we win.

    • If I win it that’s what I was going to do with it. I was going to buy-off Congress and buy the land from welfare ranchers with grazing rights. I have a whole bunch of other plans too. Now I just have to win. LOL!!!! OOPS!! Watch out for lightning!

      • Barbara and Linette: That is what I’m going to do if I win. First, if R.T. and Habitat for Horses founder will going me, I would go to Congress and say I will take over the 46,000 horses in feedlots that they have — conditions — a study is done to prove what they are saying about what horses eat. We know they will lose this battle. And tghe study would have to be done a independant company of OUR chosing. Then, upon signing of my taking over the horses, supoenas to get all the BLM paperwork to subtaniate the whereabouts of all horses rounded up. If any horse is not found that was rounded up, the BLM broke the 1971 WIld horse Roaming act and they will be sued for lots, lots, lots of monies. Enough to brake them. The next step that we will be working on while this agreement is being negotiated is finding places near the horses were rounded up where we can bring each horse closer to its original home. If they need to remain in these new homes, we will start habitats like Madeleine Pickins is working on. Then, we will go after all the auction houses, getting the horses going there, and keep them and work on finding them new homes. We will then officially close down all auctions houses and publicize “killer buyers” names so noone will sell to these individuals. Effectively, they will also go out of business and/or be charged with the maximum “cruelty to animals” charges. Any lawyer that wants to help us on this would be appreciated. I know this will work and each state near where these horses were rounded up will be close to their families and maybe even returned to their families when the study is completed and we find out all the disparaties the BLM has been telling us. Liers can’t get away with it forever. Girls, we should work together on this — no matter where we live if we win. We will be able to advertise in mass media and get a large amount of volunteers to help with our efforts. We need to think positive and pray for our Creator’s assistance to saving these beautiful animals of his — then we need to start to work on saving our dogs and cats and put breeders on notice that your time of breeding and breeding without caring what happens to the animals is OVER. Let’s pray in mass and WE WILL WIN. R.T. and Habitat for Horses please send us your prayers and you will be instrumental in this happy ending for our equine and companion animals happy futures.

  8. Well done R.T.! You and Ms.Pickens made your points quite eloquently, to bad time had to be wasted with Ms. Wallis. My biggest concern is that the BLM will use this lack of slaughter legislation as an excuse to destroy literally thousands of our wild horses and burros.

Note the use of the word ‘our’. We need to remind people in Washington that these horses do not belong to them anymore than they belong to us…you and me. They are our wild horses and burros and I for one will not tolerate anyone abusing my animals.

Ken Salazar and the BLM MOB need to be stopped. The horses currently incarcerated need to be returned to their home ranges and set free. The most recent independent panel just a week or so ago determined the BLM had no idea of what they were doing or what the ramifications might be. The even admitted they’ve been using PZP for years and do not know if it works or not.

Round-ups must be halted immediately, Ken Salazar needs to be brought up on charges of cruelty and the BLM needs to be dismantled of it’s current administration until such folks with more expertise can be found to do the proper job necessary to assure the future of our wild horses and burros is prosperous and free.

    • Wow, if a radio show could start fisticuffs, this would be it. Spilled horse blood sure does make human blood boil. I pray that the American public can use this energy to stop the BLM from conducting any more roundups. This is a civilized world we live in, not a medieval torture chamber for horses. Thanks Mr. Fitch for your good work from Denise F. Brown, artist/author.

    • Steve: I’m with you on what you say. If I am lucky enough to win the mega I will start on a massive plan and strategy that be the demise for Ken Salazar, Bob Abby and all those that have harmed our horses. May all of you that love these animals help us if we win because we will need all the help and assistance we can get — from attorneys to those with property, to those that want to volunteer in all areas, and to those that have trailers for transport. We will WIN if the Mega is mine. I will work tirelessly to win and I know with the 80 percent that want the damage to our horses stopped we have to win.
