Cloud’s Herd: the death of a promise

by R.T. Fitch

There was a feeling of foreboding doom running through the occupants of a small motel room in distant Lovell, WY on the eve of September 3rd, 2009.  Many had worked for weeks preparing a legal case to block the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) from capturing and removing the world’s most famous herd of wild horses from their designated sanctuary in the Pryor Mountains – Cloud’s Herd.  Only a few hours earlier, they had learned that their attempt to stop the madness had failed and the government agency would commence the brutal “gather” the following day.  They huddled together in hopes of formulating a plan, a focus point on which they could rally around; even though they felt the cold bite of virtual steel handcuffs on their wrists.

There were hushed whispers and brief introductions as individuals, from around the country, waited for the leader of the Cloud Foundation, Ginger Kathrens, to say a few words.  Ginger has made the preservation and protection of this herd her life’s work and each and every person assembled respected and loved her for her dedication and her efforts.  She stood front and center as the brightest light in the room while a small motel desk lamp illuminated her smile. With great conviction, she spoke:

Enny award winning Ginger Kathrens speaking with volunteer wild horse advocates

Emmy award winning Ginger Kathrens speaking with volunteer wild horse advocates

“Let us not allow the events of today become a focal point of negativity for us.  Although the future does not look bright, perhaps there will be something positive that we can learn from this experience; something that will be the key in finding solutions for the future.  At the very least, what is unfolding here in Lovell, WY has brought all of us together, people from around the country and from around the world. Let’s take a few moments and introduce ourselves to each other.”  And, with that, she nodded to a young woman sitting on the floor near her and asked;

“Tell us about yourself; where you are from; why you are here; and share your thoughts on the impending events that will be brought about tomorrow.”

One by one, each individual shared their story that had brought them to this tiny Wyoming town and what drew them to take a stand to help our country’s native wild horses.  There were 17 souls, total, crammed into that little room; but, as the personal testimonies continued, a feeling of greatness began to swell amongst them.  They were not just a small group of individuals who were struggling independently to have their voices heard; instead, they were a cohesive and growing presence that shared the same motivation, conviction and drive to continue to fight to save Cloud’s herd from total destruction.  Present were cinematographers, reporters, authors, writers, students, and independent equine advocates. There were also a host of individuals, in attendance, due to their knowledge of past experiences with wild horses.  Some simply came because, as concerned Americans, they felt compelled to help, to lend a hand to their more experienced comrades during this time of great need.  This tiny group was not a room full of fragmented individuals but a cohesive force of one mind with one mission and one passion; save the wild horses. Tomorrow, they would do what they could to stand as witnesses for the horses during the unnecessary and dangerous activities of a Federal agency gone amuck, the Bureau of Land Management.

The next morning, September 3rd, the sun slipped up over the Pryor Mountains painting beautiful hues of reds and yellows across the western foothills of the Wild Horse Refuge. On any other day, such a panoramic scene would uplift the heart of even the most hardened of observers.   Today, however, it could not warm or alleviate the icy feeling that ran through the veins of the wild horse advocates as a breeze of impending doom blew across those same foothills. It smelled of betrayal, loss of life, and the death of a dream.

A wild horse advocate speaking for the the bulk of America's voting population

A wild horse advocate speaking for the the bulk of America's voting population

The ambient temperature dictated that the benevolent observers should be in short sleeves. Instead, they huddled together in jackets and coats while trying to warm the bone chilling fear that coursed through their hearts and drove dread deep within their souls.  They were there to watch, to question, and to represent those who could not speak for themselves. From down the mountains and over the bluffs they could collectively feel the question poised on the lips of those who had harmed no one; those whose lives were about to be destroyed; those who are known around the world as Cloud’s herd. That singular, simple and brutally honest question was: “Why?”

They asked that question before the helicopter even left to do its mean gather.  They asked the question as they sat on the bluffs overlooking the trap; and, they asked the question as a small family band of wild horses with a baby in tow was driven in 90+ heat into their awaiting jail cells. Again, they asked the question, “Why?”

As they lay their heads onto their separate pillows at the end of the day, none of them could sleep; none of them could rest as they wrestled with what they had witnessed that day.  The look of betrayal and loss in the eyes of the once free wild horses played over and over on the back of their eyelids as they attempted to rest. They knew that tomorrow the sun would rise, the helicopter would fly, and more wild horses would be ripped from the land that is legally designated to be theirs.

On September 3rd the world diminished and shrunk to a smaller scale with the loss of that handful of wild horses. Tomorrow, the world will implode a little further as more souls are caged and shut away.

The wild horse advocates will continue with the struggle to answer the question posed not only by the horses, but virtually the entire population of America’s voting public as it now resonates from the mountain tops: “Why?”     Tomorrow, they will be greeted with the same response they had received today, the one carefully crafted and cast into stone by the elected officials of this once great land. The answer to the waiting world will echo loudly, again, from the Pryor Mountains in Montana and Wyoming.  The answer will be striking in its simplicity, as the answer will be nothing more than harsh, cold, deadly…silence.

“Why?”

  1. R.T., Beautifully written! The horses know you are there to help and appreciate everything all of you are doing……you are the horses voices. I am so grateful to all the people that showed up to rally their support. Wish I could be there with you. I am sending all my love and hope your way.

  2. I am glad to hear you are staying R.T. I go to bed and wake up thinking about these betrayed wild ones.

I am so sorry for them and feel beaten down a bit, but then I look at their beautiful faces in the pictures posted everywhere. I am not giving this up…as long as Ginger will fight for them, I will stand right behind her and try to help any way I can.

You hang in there. Phone calls have been coming in from people all over America. Some of them are mad. Some of them start to talk and then they just start to cry. These horses are so loved and are living, breathing art.

Thanks for keeping everyone in touch.

  3. Thank you for this article RT– beautifully written as always and you got directly to the point: WHY?
WHY does our government want to destroy this beautiful herd of horses
WHY do they not listen to the public (last time I checked we were paying their salaries)
WHY does the BLM insist that these horses are starving and their range is in dire straits when anyone can go up on the mtn range and see that this is not true?
The only thing that I don’t wonder about these days is why we are fighting this… these horses represent the disappearing wild west and the heart in all of us. I spent a lot of today trying not to cry and just spending the night trying to get the word out that WE CANNOT GIVE UP ON THESE HORSES. They are in the spotlight and they represent all wild horses. Mustangs are too special to give up on.
Land of the free? At least we are being brave.
thanks RT, keep it up– glad you and T are here.

  4. I am heart broken over this, like you all are. and I am sick to death that the BLM is doing this for no reason. I think it’s time folks that the BLM is removed and we are going to Washinton with facts. I want to know why they had 33,000 horses in holding last year and complained they couldn’t feed them, I want to know where they are. I think the bottom line for these round ups in Ely and Cloud’s herd is because they have NO adoptable horses left and I want to know what happened to them. ok I am ranting but something has to be done.

  5. Thank you for keeping watch over the BLM round-ups. Please stop calling them gathers, they are running horses for 10 plus miles in very hot weather. Treatment they would never do to their own ranches of domestic horses.

The BLM is rounding up the last family group of mustangs in America. WHY? WHY? just to take more taxpayer millions to put in the BLM pockets? why BLM?

to me the BLM are criminals and federal criminals at that! Mr. Pres Obama, please do something to stop these criminals, they are stealing from the American public!

  10. Tell me all you people.. what are you going to do for all the horses when winter comes and there is no feed for them to find in the low country.. yes there is grass up high but that grass will be under 10+ feet of snow before long and there is not enough grass to keep all the horses alive come winter. and I seen pictures of the horses and they were not FAT… there were many that if they lost 20lb’s they would be thin.
Think of the horses… oh ya… and yes there is Cloud’s band. this granddaughter.. daughter.. great granddaughter.. LOL.. sad thing is… its all ONE HORSE. it is called IN BREEDING… you need to pull the old studs and replace with younger studs so the line is not so close.
Most wild horse herds are made up from the horses left here 300 years ago and then of course there is the horses left out to join the herds or the mares that the studs went and took from the ranchers. you people need to think of the horses and not yourself s. mustangs can not be sold for slaughter nor can they be taken across the border unless sold by owners that have owner papers.. and well if they own them then i guess they have that right to do with them what they want.

Your calls are are making a difference. Thank you. Without all the media attention, and your calls, these horses would be handled very differently, As it is, they are releasing mares and foals after “processing” (contraceptive injection & hair samples) instead of shipping them to long term holding pens, and so far there have been no casualties.
The photos coming back from the range show horses fed and ready for winter. The BLM’s assertion they are starving – to justify the roundup – is nonsense.

    • The horse protection act of 1971 states: The authorized officer shall remove, as soon as he can make the necessary arrangements, wild free-roaming horses and burros, from private land at the request of the landowner where the private land is enclosed in a “legal fence” . . . In “no fence districts” or other areas where the private landowner is not required by State statute to fence the private land to protect it from trespass by domestic livestock, the authorized officer shall, as soon as he can make the necessary arrangements, remove wild free- roaming horses or burros from such private land at the request of the landowner. According to defendants this regulation imposes a duty on the Secretary to remove wild horses from private lands enclosed by a legal fence or from private lands which are unfenced if such lands are in a fence-in area (an area where livestock owners have a duty to fence their livestock in and a private landowner is not required to fence his land in to protect it from trespassing livestock). Defendants, however, insist that they have no duty to remove wild horses where the landowner has not fenced his property, but, under state law, must do so to protect it from trespassing livestock. In other words, defendants contend that in a fence-out or open range area (one where a landowner must fence out trespassing livestock) they must only remove wild horses if the landowner has erected a fence. In the present case the land is in an open range area and the plaintiff has not erected a fence.

First, B Haney: I feel so damned sorry for your horses! You may raise them and take the best of care of them – the ones you don’t cull of course – but you do it for the sake of your business. You don’t care one whit about horses as HORSES – as living, feeling beings that can suffer pain and fear just as well as you can. I only hope that you sell your “perfect” horses to people who will actually care about them.

Second, B Haney: Why are you posting here? Are you afraid us bumpkins will actually get some changes made? Maybe even get you arrested for illegally doing what you seem to be saying your doing with the horses – BLM’s or not – that stray onto YOUR unfenced land? Personally, I think you should just leave, because your comments only make us more determined.

Have a nice day everyone. Keep fighting. I know I will.

    • Excuse me, “BACK YARD HOARDERS AND BREEDERS”? I own two (2) horses and they have nine (9) acres of pasture plus bedded stalls into which they come and go as they please.

I DO have to keep them in large paddocks over the late spring to late fall because if allowed to graze freely they get too FAT. See, my horses are a pony mare and a Morgan gelding, and they are super easy keepers – much like their wild ancestors. They need very little forage to survive. In fact, they need very little forage to stay too FAT. If I told you how little I feed my horses you wouldn’t even believe me. Your horses must be hard keepers, because you don’t seem to have a clue as to how little an “old time” horse needs to stay healthy.

I don’t qualify as a “HOARDER” either – I mean TWO horses? Not a “BREEDER” either. I do have a healthy good looking mare, but she’s 18 – I’ve had her since she was a yearling – and she’s never been bred and she never will be. I’d love nothing more than a sweet baby, but that would be very irresponsible of me, so it ain’t gonna happen.

How do you know WHERE we live or WHAT we know? We’re NOT the ones who think we’re “GOD.” That would be you and the BLM.

I have three websites which I invite you to visit – my blog at http://goldendays-suzanne.blogspot.com/; my personal web sites: the one dedicated to my present gelding at http://accordingtoindy.com It’s a work in progress, but you are welcome to visit anyway. My third site is dedicated to my beloved DJ, my partner for 20 years before I lost him in 2002: http://www.djsworld1.com/ There are LOTS of pictures on all three sites.

Uh, simpleminded again- that “paint” you refer to is inside a cowbarn & it’s not paint, it’s lyme, it’s used in animal barns in the midwest because if the cow’s lick it which they do, it does not harm them- second of all our pastures are not thousands of acres like yours, they are 10-30 & I rarely leave a halter on unless the horse is out during stall cleaning for a short time, & if you were paying attention, that is not our farm, our horses have 16 X 20 box stall’s in a pole barn that is 5 years old. You are obviously a very unhappy old man that should do something other than raise horses- for their sake- you’re just in it for the money- not because you care about horses…

I haved called, emailed, left messages, but we need someone in Washington who really cares and will stop this. I care about our wild horses and know they should left alone to live wild and free. Our government wants to wipe all horses and every other kind of animal off the face of the earth.I would be up on that mountain if I had a way to get there. I know they passed a bill last month to protect the wild horses, and I know they have to vote on the bill again. Maybe we can start harrassing the senate or who ever it is that is supposed to vote on this and see if we can push them into going on and voting on the bill. We must come up with new ways to stop them and new people to contact that will help us protect them. Our Blm is an office that needs to be wiped out their only after money and what they want they don’t care about us were just the people who pay them to do their dirty work and run all over us. If you had as many friend’s horses stolen by professional horse thieves for the sole purpose of selling them for slaughter as I have, you wouldn’t feel much like speaking softly. We tried that and it DID NOT work. We didn’t get the slaughter houses closed by tippy-toeing around, and we won’t save the wild horses that way either. • NO I am not Haney… but I have been reading all that is going on around in here and just had to say something. I guess sometimes you just cant keep quite any longer.
I seen where he/she said something that might have been a good point as well as I seen where you might have had a good point. But what I seen most of is that not you or Haney would hear a word the other one said. And Yes Haney was right where he/she said that you put words into peoples mouths. And I seen were you are worried about ONE mustang more then the others it seemed.
But what i did not see was where no one said anything about how it is better to cut down on some bands to keep the bloodline going and to stop the inbreeding. when you get to much of just one bloodline then the inbreeding starts so that is what the BLM should be doing. Also if to many horses are left there will not be feed for the winter.. more then enough in the summer but under 6+ feet of snow up high in the winter sends ALL the horses to the valleys for the winter.. if the grass is ate all summer then there is nothing to dig for in the winter. Haney was right on that point.
Everyone needs to look at the BIG PICTURE.

  29. Although lively discussion and clarity of facts is always welcome, here, the use of profanity and flaming will not be tolerated.

Due to the fact that we are actually IN the Pryor Mountains and witnessing this travesty, first hand, I have very little time in front of the computer, in fact, there are articles and news issues dropping by on the wayside and I just do NOT have time to address them, now.

With all of that in mind, I am not moderating this area and trust that everyone can get along and behave accordingly. Evidently, one individual has taken this liberty over the top and I hearbyy issue the warning that should the name calling and insults continue, a certain person will be removed, not due to disagreement on the discussion point but due to the fact that he/she cannot play by very simple rules that have been dictated by our human society for generations…respect for other’s opinions.

I do believe that, name calling and cuss words aside, this sort of lack of civility is a clear example of what we are up against, right now today, in the Pryor Mountains…wonton disrespect and disregard for the wishes of the American people and when the opposing side runs out of excuses and cannot base their arguments on facts they resort to the lowest form of debating style, if you care to call it that, shouting, insults and profanity.

Let’s keep the discussion going, but please keep it clean. The sun will be coming up soon and we are heading out. We will endeavor to bring you a fresh update tonight.

Please remember, this site is here to act as a focal point and a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves, there is a bit of reverence in that calling so let’s respect the horses by respecting each other.

Keep the faith and may the Force of the Horse be with you.

  30. R.T., I appoligize for letting anger get the best of me, I just cannot grasp how some people can be so cold hearted & not understand what is happening here- not to mention the fact of killing a horse just because it’s somewhere you don’t want it to be, that just blows me away ! Thank you & the others for being there for Cloud & the other mustang’s, & trying to educate the public & our government, hopefully someday soon people will get it. Best Wishes

  31. Along with all of you my heart is breaking for our beautiful wild horse herds. We keep asking the question why and it came to my mind about a law and order program asking the same question about who was doing something unlawful, and the answer was follow the money, who stands to benefit from this removal, what will the land be used for after the removal, and who will be using it. We all get emotional during these times, but we really need to get hard nosed about the WHY and begin to research the WHY. If as I beleive someone powerful will benefit from this removal. Who is it? Can he or them stand to be brought into the light? I hope that maybe my comments will help in some small way. Thanks for listening and hang in there. May God Bless you all on the front lines. 32. Well done R.T. Keep up the good work.
The great work of you and your good friends is getting out there, even over here in Bonnie Scotland. We can’t believe this sort of thing goes on over there in the USA.

  33. Thank you R.T. for keeping us updated. This is a well written article that tells the real truth.I have set at my computer almost 24 hours a day sending out emails to our government, the media, and anyone else I could think of along with calling all over the country. I am asking for release of the old horses and to please take S1579 to the floor now and vote so the horses will be protected.I am asking myself why the senate doesn’t or are they also paid by the blm to swing their waydo something now to protect the wild horses and burros
