BLM Calls Wild Horse Death Stampede at Calico “Humane”

With over 100 Deaths and Counting the BLM won’t admit to Mistakes

The federal Bureau of Land Management has challenged Horseback’s terminology calling a Northern Nevada Calico roundup “ill fated.”

“The Calico gather wasn’t “ill fated.” It was conducted in a professional and humane manner and achieved the goal of bringing an
overpopulation of wild horses in the Calico Complex within the established appropriate management levels,” spokeswoman JoLynn Worley said in a note to the magazine.

The note failed to mention well over 100 deaths and miscarriages, protests from London to San Francisco, and calls in Congress for the Will Horse and Burro Program be stripped from the BLM due to gross mismanagement.

The horse deaths at Calico and Fallon, allegedly a result of helicopter driven stampedes, equal all of the 2009 fatalities during the bureau’s roundups.

Worley also acknowledged that Winnemucca District Manager Gene Seidlitz signed the Calico environmental assessment decision record finding of no significant impact.

Two vets have worked the “gather” and holding facility at Fallon since late December. Neither has professional vitae on file with the bureau, and one does not hold a veterinary license in that state.

  1. No, DOI/BLM…it was conducted without current or validated scientific data, resulted in multiple deaths, injuries AND the removal of equids that were given specific “sanctuary” with intent at reasonable management by law (1971 Act) …not death counts.

It was conducted by helicopter and cattle-HACKS!…not true, intelligent horsemen.

When I see death tolls (and God only knows the injuries) of live equids and multiple miscarriages…well then , honey…..you just bought yourself the “ILL-FATED” moniker. Ain’t rocket science folks, it just isn’t rocket science.

  2. Why is there no oversight of the BLM or the WH&B Agency by either government or non-profit organization? Where is the HSUS? The Nevada chapter of the HSUS hasn’t even bothered with this once. WHY is there no oversight?

      • After living in NV for over 30 years, I have found the NV HSUS ONLY concerned with dogs, cats, and other ‘house pets’. In spite of the fact that NV is 3rd in line (not counting wild ones) for the most horses per capita per state wise. TX being #1, CA being #2.

When ever I have questioned their authority to proscute horse violations they always come back with the lame argument ‘they don’t have the man power or funding to do that’. Supposedly they get little funding from the National HSUS and have to do their own fundraising.

I’m pretty disgusted with their marginal efforts regarding horses in my state. Additionally it’s interesting to note, during and after round ups they don’t even make a statement on what went on even after mulititudes of documentation.

  3. They DO HAVE OVERSIGHT…ain’t no one listening. Must be because equids don’t vote.

Hey, Congress….I do talk/care and I talk at the feed store, with my farrier, my reps and neighbors. And I will tell you, it’s not easy or pleasant.

  4. Notice how the BLM troll(s) doesn’t mention science or cooperation among welfare groups, biologists re: wild equids OR THE DEATH TOLL THAT THEY CHERRY PICK!?!?!?

    S. Long got the death toll.

BTW, last I checked with V.Tobin…the BLM website STILL hasn’t been updated since the 23rd. Gotta go check for myself.

    Thanks Mr. Long. Thanks R.T.

  5. Call Dr. Gary Brickler, regional APHIS/USDA regional vet for the area that covers Nevada, he is located in Sacramento calif # 916-854-3950, I asked for a complete investigation of the pigeon fever outbreak- a quarentine of the facilitys, no adoptions and no nevada roundups until this highly contagious disease has run its course, any movement of horses from within the state or across state lines could cause a spred across the US..any of those horses could be carrying the virus.

  6. Got a call back from Dr. Brickler..he is not in charge of the WH&B end..It is Dr.Albert Kane 976-494-7234, Ft Collins Colo. then posssibly a call to the Nevada Dept of Agriculture to close the state to movement of horses out of state.

    • Shari; it’s all fraud, and they are just as guilty of bringing down our wild horses and burros as the banks are for causing the collapse of of economy, and that is why most of us on these pages are so torqued!

You see how the government treats the banks, their still getting golden parachutes for their employees, while the rest of us have suffered home foreclosures, joblessness, and homelessness. At the very minimum if the other stuff hasn’t effected you or someone you know, I’ll bet they are ‘enjoying’ NOT higher interest rates on credit cards, inflation, and rising health costs.

The wild horse program is a precurser to what you’re going to see now that they have approved health care for the entire country. If they don’t do anything about a small (relatively speaking) epidemic of horse illness, think of how their going to treat the humans when an epidemic arises within our species.

What we as a people and country want seem to have no impact on what goes on in D.C. they are out of touch and consider us nothing but ‘feeders’ preying on the system. The only ones that matter to them are the lobbists or the rich folk that support their campaigns so they can make their own lives better.
