BLM Suspends Stampede

Animal Recovery Mission and Respect4Horses have been working with the BLM and the Army Depot in regards to the Walker Lake Herd, a herd of approximately 104 horses living around Walker Lake in Hawthorne, Nevada on Army Depot property. On October 20th the BLM signed a Record of Decision to roundup and remove this herd by the end of November 2010.
The communities of Hawthorne and Walker Lake are deeply attached to these horses as evidenced by the hundreds of letters and petition signatures they collected. On Friday October 30th, Respect4horses, Animal Recovery Mission, and a few members of the Hawthorne and Walker Lake communities presented the Walker Lake Herd Preservation Proposal to the BLM.
The Proposal includes sensible and cost effective solutions to solve a “public safety hazard” on S95, as well as a ground breaking humane roundup plan by natural horsemanship principals in order to manage this herd humanely and stress free on the range.
In response to the Walker Lake Herd Preservation Proposal, Terri Knutson, BLM Field Office Manager, Stillwater Field Office in Carson City, has suspended the November roundup of the Walker Lake Herd. Animal Recovery Mission and Respect4Horses look forward to further work out the details of this proposal with all parties involved.

Thank you to all including the community who pulled together behind the horses. And thank you to Terri Knutson for being willing to at least look at alternate proposals instead of the damn the torpedoes full speed ahead approach which has grown to be the norm.

Good news and thanks to everyone who helped make this happen. I was especially pleased to hear someone at the BLM is willing to explore COOPERATION.

you have done a wonderful job. Just what I wanted to see happen and hopefully it goes as planned. these horses do not need to be chased by helicopters and man handled by people who don’t (1) care; (2) don’t know anything about horses (at least wild ones) and (3) are getting paid to do what they have been asked to do and don’t care how it is done. Good luck……….

The Walker Lake Wild Horse Group, was represented by a man that did & said the right things. Plus,there was another Nevada Group that was heavily involved.They shy from Media & need no applause, just want the Wild Horses & Burros safe.

My daughter and I had the wonderful privelage of attending the morning Carson meeting with the BLM. Terry and Allen were very gracious and forthright with the obstacles that we were going to face. Then, my daughter and I were honored with a private audience with Mr. Wenker, the BLM Director, and he had great stories about the herds throughout Nevada, including a truly interesting story about a large herd on a Nevada military installation. With warm thanks, we left the meeting with high hopes. God bless the “One who needs no applause.”

Wonderful Story Stacey i only wish they were all like that !!!!! Just finished watching a youtube video on the Wild Ones at Walker lake, How wonderful it was to see them Wild and Free, I had almost forgotten what they look like , my heart and soul took flight watching them Wild and Free , just like it was meant to be for them……………. Just like I used to go see them on the desert in Nevada …What a magnificent sight they are….even the birds love and want to be with them, just like us………. I will except nothing less for them but the freedom and the respect they deserve !!!!!

The “Hawthorne/Wlaker Lake Group” has just updated Teri Knutson with good news. This week we had a meeting with government staff personnel and have put a plan into motion. We are working on a fast track on getting approvals for the NEPA and or EA , Cultural permits and Engineer drawings with our Environmental department. Hoping the Government staff will do this under an emergency action project. Then tomorrow I will be talking to NDOT for two warning signs on US HWY 95 around the Old Ski Beach area, past the Gravel Pit area. I called Ms Starnes before she said we had to wait for the agency to suspend the round up. ok Teri Knutson will be coming to Hawthorne for more discussions . This is such a learning experience… all the governmental stuff to be approved. A big THANKS to our communities hard work.

I would also love to read the Proposal, and another huge applause for everyone !!! This makes me Proud to be a American !!!!! I love all the horses !!!!! Want them all to have the Love and respect from every American that they so well deserve. again KUDOS to all…………Let Hawthorn be the example to all……………………………..would also like to know the name of the man who had the very special wisely chosen words and intervened in that very special meeting !!!! I’d like to sincerely thank Maggie’s Resaraunt for letting us hold our Hawthorne/Walker Lake group meetings there. I’d also like to thank Clydene and my dad Stacey, as well as all our wonderful members for working so hard on this project. A special thank you to the wonderful people I met at the BLM: Terry, Allen, and especially Mr. Wenker. And, thank you to the “one who needs no applause.”
I had a lot of fun on this journey, helping the wild ones and I’m very happy they are safe once again.

Just saw the CNN piece 12-7-10. that you, Richard Kudo, put out. What a pile of sensationalism and misinformation. Must be nice to think you know what is going on with the project with out discussing it with the Gov. staff or the local Hawthorne/Walker Lake group. Once again you prove to create problems rather than solving anything. Anarchy Run-a Muck. Your insistance to dictate, sensationalize, and create drama is indicitive of your MO. It is nowhere near appropriate in this environment. Hope you acquired the self-glorification that you were looking for. Pathetic. In the mean time the fence is a go.

The video that was shown was not quite the truth as we expected from CNN… Many times we have told different groups including CNN that the Army and our Contractor Plant Manager said no publicity. Today I get an earful because the horses have been put in the limelight. This has not been a group effort, with the other horses advicates involved. They do not know the day to day happenings of what we have been accomplishing.
The Walker Lake Wild horses group is and will continue to keep our project and the relationship with BLM out of the limelight as we have been asked.

Clydene- as all of us here know the ‘truth’ is never clear. Information vs misinformation its hard to know which is which sometimes. I think as an advocate I am just happy somebody is paying attention to what is happening to ALL our wild horses, not just those in the Walker Lake Herd. Our hearts are happy and we look forward to other herds being “saved”. If there was ‘one stop shopping’ for the truth none of us would be here searching for answers. We all lose a little bit of ourselves every time another family is ripped from their homes and freedom. Wishing the Walker Lake Group much success, we are counting on you.
