‘Help Nevada Animals‘ Releases Shocking Video
Warning: this video displays cruelty that will offend most if not everyone who views it!
While the likes of Dave Duquette and Sue Wallis waved their out-of-state banners and declared that Horse Tripping does not exist in Nevada the cruel and inhumane practice was occurring right under their upturned, pig-like noses.
“Help Nevada Animals” has released a shocking video captured at the Winnemucca Annual Charreada on April 30, 2011. Not only shows horse tripping to be alive and well in a state that claims to not have it, but also that horses are downed, injured, prodded with electric cattle prods, used over and over in repeated events, and are not given water throughout an entire day of events. Blatant abuse to these horses, which are obvious domestics, is in no way in the spirit of a true rodeo and rodeo sportsmanship.
Once again Duquette, Wallis and their bogus United Horsemen.org are shown to be perpetrators of equine cruelty and an embarrassment to the sane and civil equine community. Meanwhile, Nevada’s legislators need to follow through with outlawing Horse Tripping within their state and disregard the chatter from the horse eaters to the north, the clanking of their butcher cleavers fall upon deaf ears.

How can people sit and watch this and so nothing??? Then these same horses go off to slaughter just like the horses from the Cheyenne Stampede Frontier Days. They are there for entertainment and then they go off to the horrors of the slaughter house. Why do people support these activities? People must stop going and supporting the torture of animals for entertainment.
We need to hold the people and the legislature of Nevada accountable for the torture of animals. These are despicable acts of violence against animals and they need to stop!

It was a sad for horses, the people of Nevada, and the democratic process. I am a lifelong rodeo supporter and horse owner.
On April 15, the Senate Natural Resources Committee let die SB 364 without even taking a vote. The bill would have outlawed the brutal practice of horse tripping, a standard event of the Mexican-style rodeo called charreada. Only Senators Mark Manendo and David Parks supported the bill. Senators Dean Rhoads, Michael Roberson and John Lee opposed it, despite overwhelming evidence of the need for the measure.
Charreada features nine events, three of which involve the roping of running horses by the legs, either front (manganas), or rear (piales.) Can you spell insanity? This is not a standard ranching practice anywhere in the U.S., nor is it sanctioned by any American-style rodeo association. Horse tripping is already banned in eight states: California, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arizona, Nebraska, Illinois, Maine and Florida.
Reportedly, Sen. Rhoads and the rodeo/ranching community, in their paranoia, lobbied heavily to kill this bill, claiming it was a first step toward outlawing all of rodeo. Nonsense! All the horse pucky is obviously not in the arena. The bill had nothing to do with sanctioned rodeo events.
Some media coverage might have made the difference. Maybe next session. Meanwhile, there’s to be a charreada in Winnemucca at 11 a.m. April 30-May 1, No. 50 Winnemucca Blvd. Check it out. And please, take a legislator with you.

Dear KAschaaf(kasohio) I woul;d like to address what you said about Mexico and the Bull Fight , I was in cancun several years ago, I had no idea that they kill the Bull, I went there , much to my dismay, When the Matador killed the Bull, I passed out, I had to be hospitalized……………When he stabbed the Bull , which he did it right in his head the poor thing fell to his knees and let out the most horrible cry I have ever heard, I will never forget that cry….. It still to today if I think about it my stomach turns……………………….. And i will start to cry, the cruelty was unforgetable……. and unforgiveable………..How anyone could cheer when that took place to me was the height of human ignorance………………….From that day forth i i will never be the same……………………….

There is one human trait that endures in some people…..just tell them that they CAN’T and watch what happens. Tell them that they CAN’T document. Tell them that they CAN’T visit the privately owned Wild Horse concentration camps. Tell them that they CAN’T fight City Hall…and WATCH WHAT HAPPENS. The Human Spirit endures. Here’s a question. If horse tripping is suppose to be so humane–how about we have a human equivalent. We send SS in running for all she’s worth–and roping and yanking her legs right out from underneath her. Let her fall flat on her face. Send her off to the hospital and let her all the MRI’s she wants. Then have those come back and tell us what they said. She falls on her backside–she rupture discs. She falls flat on her face–she’ll probably have some knee injuries.
How in heavens name is this responsible or even humane? Deliberately making a horse fall–they are big animals who get hurt very easily.
If I had the money and the resources I’d go find that poor horse and buy him. And then I’d try my best to give him the life he deserved. One that is respectful and full of love. And I wouldn’t forget the carrots!

Margaret, you hit on a good point. There seems to be a thirst for violence in some humans. When it’s done for the sake of entertainment, it is especially abhorrent.
There are human events that satisfy that need and the playing field is level….the participants are there voluntarily. Boxing, Kick Boxing, Football…all of the contact sports. From what I understand, Paint Ball is very popular. The animals should be left out of it.

Lisa, your link is to United Horsemen’s Association, an African-American group headquartered in Fredricksburg, PA. I have no information about their position on equine welfare or slaughter. One of their main missions is working with children and youth. BTW, their CMN event was on May 14th.
Dave Duquette and Slaughterhouse Sue’s organization is United Horsemen’s Front, but it comes up when you search for “United Horsemen”, and the URLs are similar.
I think it’s time we start finding out about as many organizations as possible re: their positions on equine welfare and slaughter. Breed associations, individual breeders, animal welfare advocates, etc., and, yes, equine rescues.
If any are unwilling to take a stand against slaughter, or say they’re “neutral”, ask them why they feel that way. If they say slaughter is one option to address the “unwanted horse” situation, ask if and how they’re working to identify and support alternatives.

In my fantasies, sometimes I think if only we could round up all those who participate, by watching or doing, in any animal cruelty. And then, gladiator-like, put them in an arena with a bunch of hungry lions, tigers and bears – Oh, My!! But then I remember that even that kind of thinking really makes me no better than those I rail against…the work of rescue on any level so often feels like Sisyphus and the endless rolling of the heavy stone, only to have it fall back again – yet, the alternative, to do nothing, is not an option. . . the only thing needed for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing… Hence, in the words of Winston Churchill, we must “never, never, never give up!!”

This is just unsciounable(sp). I know what I would like to do to them. And, it wouldn’t be pretty. This is animal cruelty and anyone that likes to see is sicko. What has the human race become that they would like to see this done to this gorgeous animal. Gosh, I wish I had the means and there would not be a horse or donkey that wouldn’t have a home. Their home would be with me to have love and shelter, medical need when necessary, and the affection that all these animals deserve and so often does not get. I cry when I think how mean the human race has become and I only hope that get what’s coming to them when they take their last breath.

FUEL THAT ANGER INTO ACTION!
Call all your Nevada state legislators (see the website of the Nevada State Legislature for contact info), and raise hell. Esp. the members of the Senate Natural Resources Committee, where AB 364 (Copening) died last month. That bill would have banned horse tripping. Insist that these abused horses get some respite NOW, not in the next legislative session, which is two years away.
It is rumored that Senator Dean Rhoads lobbied heavily behind the scenes to kill this bill, along with his cronies from the ranching, rodeo and farm bureau community. Shame! And Winnemucca is in his district.

Horses are big and heavy and falling is something they do not do for fun naturally!! Why do you think movies banned this?? Horses had to be put down because they were harmed! It is cruelty. If someone did that to a horse of mine that rope would be around their legs in no time! You think if my skill level is high enough you won’t get hurt??? Ludicrous! Liars!! The Nevada Legislature recently blew a chance to fix this disgraceful problem through legislation. They turned a blind eye. Didn’t want the cultural “fallout.” They are as much to blame as anyone. Hold them accountable, Nevada!

I wonder if the Feds could step in under The Horse Protection Act of 1970. I’ve done some reading, and I think what seem to be “narrow” definitions could be applied by extension – the same way the Supreme Court used a dictionary definition as part of its ruling that corporations are “persons”.

It seems like anyone could contact the local police and state initially that there is animal cruelty going on and they are willing to ‘press charges.’
That might get the constabulary out to investigate. A long time ago a detective told me that most often people aren’t willing to ‘press charges’ and that is why in some cases things never get pursued.

I just don’t understand why the person taking the video didn’t do anything to help the animals or prevent any abuse she thought was happening. She sat there for two days yet claims that no water or feed was provided. Even though that is not true, she did not make an attempt to check or provide anything. If I see a child or person in danger, I intervene even if my personal safety is jeopardized. I also take a stand when members violate Charro or animal welfare rules and laws. I live in California and was not at the event. We have confirmed that a Veterinarian was on site and reports were taken. Water and feed was adequately available. Mynews4 did a follow up with the great news that the felled horse did not sustain any injuries. This was one accident out of 67+ ropings. The accidental fall was regretful but it was an isolated incident. Everything will be done to help prevent accidental falls and sanctions and fines will be carried out against the participants who offended Charro and animal welfare rules and laws. the link is below.

It does not have the right feel to the violence unleashed upon the terrified animal. I have heard that this was not all that was done to the horse and in the video hot shotting is done liberally to get the horse frightened, no, terrified- so it will run all out. This is all unnecessary and unsportsmanlike. This is not a sport but a cruel, stupid and ugly attack. Do you claim it ‘shows off a skill in roping’? I say; like hell it does!!

Toby, one of the main arguments made against the bill was that horse tripping didn’t occur in Nevada, so there was no need for passage. The Winnamucca event certainly blew that assertion all to hell! And it happened so soon after the bill was defeated I consider it a “raspberry” to both legislators and the general public by those who do indeed support it, even though they weren’t willing to SAY so at the Nevada meetings.
So here’s a few questions for you, along with my answers:
Would a ban on tripping impact any legitimate sanctioned events? NO!
Would a state wide-ban on tripping help local agencies police horse events? YES! FYI, several Nevada counties have already banned the practice.
Would a ban on tripping affect any other rodeo or equine events? NO … despite some people’s feigned “paranoia”!
Would a ban on tripping affect normal ranching, veterinary or training activities? NO!
Would a ban on tripping enhance Nevada’s image with respect to the fact that the state strives to run reasonable safe equine and livestock events that would be appropriate for families of all ages to attend? YES!
The vet checked the horses AT THE EVENT. I’d like to know what shape they were in over the next few days. That is if any could be located … which I doubt!
I’ve read pro-tripping comments that some horses being tripped “actually seem to enjoy it” as an opportunity to “outwit the charros”. How does a horse “outwit” so many ropers? Did the horse that was being tripped look like it was “enjoying” the experience to you? What about these:

TD, one horse subjected to any cruel act is one to many, and no matter how you spin it roping a horses legs while he is running is tripping in any ones book. Your article states it is part of a culture and a family event. If your culture needs to have this sick and illegal CULTURAL activity then they should stay in mexico, NOT here in America. In 1994, Governor Pete Wilson signed a bill into law banning the intentional tripping of horses for entertainment or sport in California.
The bill was supported by numerous groups including the California Veterinary Medical Association, the American Horse Protection Association, the California Council of Police and Sheriffs, the California District Attorney’s Association, the Great American Cowboy Association, and breeding and racing associations.
Hispanic organizations also endorsed the California legislation including the Mexican American Chamber of Commerce.
Horse tripping is so cruel it has been banned in other U.S. states: Florida, Illinois, Maine, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and most recently, Nebraska in 2008.
The practice has also been banned in film and TV production, by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, and the American Quarter Horse Association.
Sadly, horse tripping has spread to Arizona, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado (where it has become a part of their state fair rodeo program) and the eastern region of Washington state.
Outlawing horse slaughter would not only protect horses from entering the slaughter pipeline, but also remove them as a major source of horses for charreada events, striking a significant blow to this cruel and disgusting practice.

I meant to post this comment about a week ago, and then things got a little crazy! First, thank you so much for this blog and for this post. AWESOME! Second, I wanted to give an update on this issue. Because of the video and the subsequent embarrassment of having irrefutable evidence that false testimony was given and believed at the Senate Natural Resources Committee Meeting, this bill may be resurrected. Senator Mark Manendo, a real friend to animals, has been working tirelessly to not allow this issue to die. We’re keeping the pressure on, and will be sure to post updates!

What I saw was a whole lot of cowboys chasing one horse around an arena. The man with the lasso was very talented the way he handles his lariat, nice demonstration. He could have just as easily proved his prowess by roping a person running around the arena. Fortunately THAT horse did not panic when it was hit or caught with the rope, except a little at the end. But SOME horses do panic. People who abuse the system and do not follow the rules to prevent animals in rodeos, etc from being abused and tormented have ruined it for the rest. This happens all the time in every ‘industry’. The government is forced to step in regulate and make sure abuse does not occur and or continue. People have forgotten the Golden Rule. The ‘human’ race has forgotten to use good sense and common decency.

I said it before and will say it again-American cowboys do not practice tripping ~ sounds to me as though you are trying to shove your culture down our throats. Watched your videos and did not see anyone their but Mexicans in the stands, not like the Americans you see at an American rodeo. You can spin it anyway you want but if I walk past you and you stick your foot out and I fall YOU TRIPPED ME ~ if a horse runs past you and you rope his legs and he falls YOU TRIPPED HIM and you are not changing our minds or our opinions. PROUD TO BE OF THE AMERICAN CULTURE we don’t impose our culture on Mexico.

Every culture, neighborhood, school room, church, campground, laundromat, hospice and flower shop have two kinds of people:
those who value animal welfare and those who don’t, for whatever reasons.
You don’t have to be of any culture or nationality to be callous toward animal fear or pain.
This inability to feel compassion toward other creatures is found in all cultures and nationalities.
There is none so deaf as he who will NOT hear, as the saying goes.

I have a rescued gelding who was brutalized by horse tripping events. He has broken vertebras in his neck, rope burns around his legs, scars on the side of his face where he slid face-down in the dirt, hip and hock problems and if all that wasn’t bad enough, he tried to leap out of the corral and impaled himself on a stake (or was gored by a bull..this part is still unknown). I’ve been able to gentle him up using Parelli Natural Horsemanship but he will never be whole again. He was brutalized to the point of insanity. He is safe and happy with me now but he is unrideable due to his extreme reactions to pressure…he feels he has to fight for his life. I’m teaching him voice commands since he can’t fight with words. This horse is the love of my life but he is so, so damaged. Please bid on horses like mine at the Fallon Livestock Auction (slaughter auction) so the mexican killers don’t get them. I love my horse.

I’m almost 36 and I remember many years ago seeing a TV special/documentary about Charros and how they did this very thing. The horses were shown breaking their necks, slamming against the walls to the point their body ripped open and their insides came spilling out. They also showed a man and a young boy standing next to a horse and the boy reached up and socked the horse in the face. There was nothing more I would’ve loved than to beat that boy silly. I get tired of hearing about our “innocent, helpless children” and how we must protect them but these aren’t ones I want to expend my care on and these children are already poisoned by their disgusting parents and/or peers to have no regard whatsoever for animals and probably not all that much for other people. What a sick excuse to say that it’s a cultural thing to justify animal abuse and for entertainment no less. I hate to say it but I wish all these cruel sick people got washed away in a tsunami. I would not lose a wink of sleep to know these filthy lowlifes are no more. And Sue Wallis should just keel her fat a## over after eating the horse meat she so diligently promoted to have slaughtered legally. Being the wishful thinker I was, I had hoped horse tripping had died out or banned since seeing that on TV.
Reasons like these is why I can’t wait for this world to end, yes I know how dramatic that sounds but I can’t stand to see any animal suffer at the hands of our fellow “species.” The human race is a deplorable, heartless savage and the good works people are doing to better this world will never catch up to the perpetual mess people continue to make. The more and more I see stuff like this, the less and less compassion I have for people in general. Not that i would ever hurt or kill anybody, except in selfdefense. All I can say is that I hope there is a special place in hell for animal abusers and I’m furious that Obama reneged on his promise to ban horseslaughter. Horse exporting should also be outlawed for that matter.

Dear Sirarone, You are correct on many counts except for one very important one and that is Faith, If there is anything the Horse teaches so eliqueintly it is Faith , he believes in us, and waits for us to help him , he has Faith, never gives up therefore Honor him and have Faith that WE HIS CARETAKER CAN AND WILL HELP HIM AS HE HAS HELPED US NEVER LOSING FAITH IN US THAT WILL INFACT HELP HIM .., In this all they have perseverance , , so lets all show that we have learned well from him…………………………… Lets give back to him what he has won for us many times over FREEDOM>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
