EWA and ARM Head the Call
Chicago (EWA) –Equine Welfare organizations around the world are responding to an appeal by their Mexican counterparts requesting support in forcing an end to the blatant cruelty and abuse at the San Bernabe Slaughter Auction in the Municipality of Almoloya de Juárez.
A video appeal was released on July 3, revealing the common place abuse of equines heading to slaughter. In an incident that is said to be typical of the mistreatment, a pregnant mare with a broken foot was pushed off a ramp that resulted in her breaking both of her knees. In obvious agony, she was dragged off to slaughter.
A first petition with over 5,000 signatures was delivered to the Mexican embassy in Washington on June 27. The continuing appeal and a petition being circulated are calling for the Mexican government to shut down the facility. San Bernabe, the largest such unregulated facility in Mexico, has been in operation for 70 years and is well known for the extremely abusive treatment of animals in violation of many federal regulations.
American horse owners should be very concerned because U.S. horses are sent to this facility. It should be noted that US Horses were being sent to Mexican slaughter facilities long before the U.S. plants closed. Between the years 1989-2006, 775,474 U.S. horses were exported for slaughter to Canada, Mexico and Japan.
As long as horse slaughter exists, U.S. horses are in jeopardy of being sent to this and other facilities.
Equine Welfare Alliance along with the Animal Protection Association of Mexico, Animal Law Coalition, Animals’ Angels, APASDEM, Animal Recovery Mission, Commission for San Bernabe Market and Anti-Fur Society call for global support to join us in an appeal to Enrique Peña Nieto to shutter the doors of San Bernabe forever.
We are appealing to all members of the U.S. Congress to prevent American horses from enduring the fate awaiting them at San Bernabe by swiftly passing federal legislation (S. 1176) to prohibit horse slaughter in the U.S. and export over our borders.

Straight from the Horse's Heart 
This is a big ugly project and I am hoping that it can be handled without the crusading of our advocates leading to trips into the depths of this lawless and very hostile place. Please let those with experience do that sort of investigation. These people and this place are a whole other world. Working with the Mexican government will be tough enough. Don’t try to be a hero on Mexican soil! You may not live to regret it!! Stay here and fight this. You are not mercenaries and you do not have any to protect you!!

I can not bring myself to watch this video as it would be too painful for me and is haunting me just to read the words. This abuse must be stopped but more importantly, the export of our American horses to Mexico must be stopped NOW! There is no excuse.When I see things like this I wonder why I am still alive and I question why I am living in such a barbaic world that can be so cruel. I feel their pain, I feel it in my chest as my heart breaks for them. I pray to God everyday literally that this practice be stopped and that people in countries where this meat is ate and that they will have clarity and realize that this is so so wrong!

This is from Europe, i have been awat a while from reading all the mails about this issue, i couldn’t cope anymore.
You’d say, what a coward, no, i’m not a coward, i just went physically sick, only human after all.
Will pick it up again, now that the facebook groups have changed so that people will be reading updates as they come, i will inform the european readers that this is what they eat.

Thank you for passing this information along to others. The horses appreciate it. I can’t see anyone eating horse meat after witnessing how they are slaughtered. The meat must be tainted with negative hormones due to the stress they are killed under. Not good to eat,

OMG ! I cannot bare to watch the video, the pictures in my mind are bad enough, I feel her pain, OMG>>>>>> This slaughter has to stop and stop now, I have never in my life felt such horror , these are living breathing awesome creatures, how can any human being be a party to this horror, how do these people sleep at night????? I really would like to know the answer……The horses truth be known they are so much like us, What we have witnessed here is EXTREME CRUELY at its worsed ……………… Please we must stop this horror, we must use every bit of our knowledge, every bit of our courage , pride to stop this ………………………………..My tears for this horse burn down my face in horror…………………………………This horses are pure and innocent, why must we be forced to allow this to happen to them??????????

As Mar stated, this is dangerous work and it takes people with some real expertise and experience to go into this territory…no place for beginners. Probably the best thing for most of us to do is to FIGHT HORSE SLAUGHTER here. Keep hammering our own legislators. WE CAN DO IT.

I will never understand the cruelty of man towards other species. There has to be a complete disconnect of feeling towards animals, a lack of respect, an unawareness of their rightful place on this Earth. What causes such a lack of empathy, an understanding of each species right to exist for their own sake? Cruelty abounds in these places of death for OUR horses.
What kind of perople are we, that we can cause this most noble of animals, this dear friend and companion, this brave and true soul to suffer such an agonizing trip to the Canadian and Mexican slaughterhouses – all for people to eat?
And then there are the rest of us, we are those people that I love and admire so greatly. It is the animals and the good and kind people that keep me going onwards towards the day we have no American horses going to slaughter anywhere on this Earth.

We have to keep in mind that the great majority of human beings are totally repulsed at any kind of cruelty to animals. Those people who torture animals and kill them inhumanely do so with the scorn and contempt of our society. These people are considered perverts by educated, enlightened, and compassionate people. Even animal agricultural businesses who recognize that the products they have to offer the consumer are of higher quality when they are treated humanely recognize the travesty that animal cruelty creates. If there is any single phenomenon that would cause people who enjoy animal products as part of their diet to become devoted vegans, it would be the conviction that the meat industry is incapable of policing itself.

Sheryl Crowe was given a video in May to see what she would be coming to endorse.
Sheryl lover of horses? NO Sheryl lover of money? YES. Otherwise why would she do it…she had video proof ….here’s what I think should happen: Sheryl and Kid Rock should publicly apologize to those of us who fight this kind of cruelty everyday. ALL THE PROCEEDS FROM THIS CONCERT INCLUDING MONIES MADE OFF THEIR MEMORIBILIA SHOULD GO TO THE CLOUD FOUNDATION…NOT JUST A “PORTION”. I THINK THAT BOTH OF THEM SHOULD SPEAK OUT AGAINST THE TORTURE THESE ANIMALS ENDURE AT THE HAND OF HUMANS..AFTER ALL THESE ANIMALS DIED FOR HUMAN ENTERTAINMENT…SO YOU BELIEVE HORSES, FOALS,CALFS AND BULLS SHOULD BE TREATED THIS WAY? I can’t watch the video. To believe that any of these horses, let alone a pregnant mare, be treated with such cruetly is beyond belief. I think ALL AMERICANS SHOULD BOYCOTT VACATIONING IN SUCH AN ANIMAL CRUELTY COUNTRY. Maybe when their resorts dry up and they can’t afford to stay open because the American people demand the closure of these facilities in Mexico, we will gain some ground. I’m sure demanding the closure and staying away in droves until these facilities are closed would make a tremendous difference. It’s about time we use our brains and start punishing people for their animal abuse. As far as I’m concerned, all of these people abusing horses, no matter where they are, deserve the cruelest and painful death that can be. THere is no excuse pr reaspm for animal cruelty of any kind. Anne and Laurie above said a mouthful and I concur with them. Crow and her husband should relinquish all of the monies from their concerts to the Cloud Foundation and animal rescues and sanctuaries – not their own greedy pockets.

OMG!!!! Just when you think you cannot be sickened anymore, more delibrate, inhumane cruelty emerges. But consider the source of the plant, look how they treat their horses here. I am sick and tired of all the rodeos now being held all over the country. Many are no better. Most do not deserve to own these beautiful horses. All on the post are right. You must pray for those being lost. These investigations and actions must be left to those trained to monitor these actions. How do they do it? I pray each day to give them courage to continue their work. It is dangerous and gut wrenching. Most of us could NOT DO IT! But as Americans we must keep the struggle up with our own Legislators for THEY ARE THE ONES WHO SIT IN WASHINGTON AND ALLOW THIS TO CONTINUE. THEY CAN STOP IT! What we need to do is get together and get as many buses and supporters as possible and protest these actions. How about the million man march? Did they get coverage? You bet they did! I will be calling again and emailing again until they KNOW ME BY NAME (which they probably do already). We support the media by watching all of their programs. Disney – I think I will send them an email as they pride themselves on family shows. As far as Sheryl Crow, I can’t believe she doesn’t know whats going on. I sent an email to the Cloud Foundation who would be receiving the profits. Yes, they need the funds, but I think the Clould Foundation needs to meet with their PR person. I like her music, but will think twice about purchasing any more CD’s. Tragic!! Everyone should send her an email regarding their position on the Cheyenne concert. What a shame..I cannot fathom this..

In todays society, inhumane barbaric savages must not exist. How can anyone torture another living being? The poor defenseless horses endure such senseless suffering, breaks my heart, I want to rescue them all. Why ins’t anyone in this country stopping all the killer trucks at the brutal Mexican or Canadian border?
