International Equine Conference Blasts Off in DC

(The News As We See It) by R.T. Fitch ~ President of Wild Horse Freedom Federation

Presenters Speak to Packed House

WASHINGTON D.C.  (WHFF)- Day one of the first annual International Equine Conference started with a stunning schedule of noted equine professionals from across the United States and beyond.  Speaking to a packed house, such notables as scientists Dr. Ann Marini and Dr. Marlene Haffner spoke on the issue of food safety and the associated dangers of foreign consumers eating drug tainted, slaughtered American horses while a score of international experts presented to the audience programs on equine health, welfare and ways forward to ensure a solid foundation for a sustainable and humane future for America’s revered companion animals, the horse.

Nationally recognized officials from both the ASPCA and HSUS were on hand to highlight the programs that are place to aide in the protection of the American horse both domestic and wild.  Representatives from as far away as Canada spoke while groups from Florida presented on their efforts to stop the unlawful practice of backyard horse slaughter in their otherwise, sunshine filled state.

Twelve hours of rapid fire presentations were made with the day culminating with a special, private screening of Katia Louise’ spellbinding movie, “Saving America’s Horses – A Nation Betrayed”

“It’s our intent to give the public a toolkit to take back out into the public sector”, said Vicki Tobin, VP of one of the organizing groups the Equine Welfare Alliance, “We are arming individuals with scientific facts, figures and the truth so that they can not only better represent the issues that our our American equines currently face but can aide in the fight against the propaganda and misinformation put forth by the anti-horse factions that rant across this country.  The truth will always prevail.”

The scientific equine conference is being held from Sept. 26th through the 28th.  Speakers and Agenda items can be acquired by clicking (HERE)

Everyone should experience Washington. D.C. at some time. The rally must have been great..I know everyone had a great time and will probably come back with so many great ideas too.

  4. There is NO PETITION to stop the roundups and have a moratorium on the capture and removal of Wild Horses and Burros at the White House site. I have tried to get into it and to start a Petition…

    NO WAY does an anti slaughter petition have anything to do with saving our wild horses and burros on their ranges!!!!

    Please, if anyone can get into the White House petition site we need to get a
    petition going for the Wild Ones!!!!!

    Please help!

      • WOW, I cannot believe this petition is going out without a mention of the burro who is also a National Heritage Species, and critically endangered. This upsets me greatly.

    • I’m with you on this one Mar…I would gladly sign a petition for ending the roundups and have no idea how this would be put together, but like you said, the other ones don’t stop the roundups which add to the slaughter problem.. We need to stop this where is starts … out on the ranges where there should never be any roundups again. We are already BELOW VIABLE LEVELS in to many of the HMA’s now as it stands for last counts.

      • Marjorie and Deby- this is the one up and one below is one I wrote;

        THIS IS THE PRESENT PETITION BY “DIANA” WHICH IS UP;
        WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:
        Stop all Wild Horse Roundups
        America’s mustangs are cherished nationally and internationally as symbols of independence and freedom and protected by an Act of Congress. Yet the BLM’s destructive management policy has reduced their number to a mere 30,000. The agency warehouses more wild horses in government holding pens than are left on the range. The cost to the taxpayers for this broken program is expected to exceed $70 million this fiscal year. On behalf of our collective memberships of millions of citizens, we ask the Obama Administration to deliver the change it promised by reforming the BLM’s current costly and inhumane program. The agency talks about change, but continues business as usual policies that claim the lives of more and more mustangs. The situation is untenable and must change.

        This is a sample written by me yesterday;

        Lead in;

        Our Wild Horses and Burros are disappearing at an alarming rate. Their management by the Bureau of Land Management has become a

        dismantling of the Wild and Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971. We ask for a Moratorium, preferably for 10 years, on all roundups, removals and continued Long Term Holding of our wild horses and burros. We want to have the participation of the BLM in overhauling and creating new humane management without the BLM control. We ask for this because there is no progressive exchange between BLM and the Wild Horse and Burro Advocates. There needs to be a dialogue for change and developing the future preservation of what is left of our wild herds. In the 40 years of BLM management our wild horses and burros have not once had the recommended independent studies or a census taken! With low approval on wild horse activities the BLM does not know how to stop or change direction. They do not have the right to zero out any herds or dispose of our wild horses as they have done.

        Our government cannot take our wild horses and burros, and their lands, from us, the People of the United States of America! end

        Since Diana’s is there already people who do not agree with an alternative can sign hers. This has more teethe and direction. If people want to toss things around then they should. This is the sort of thing we need to do together. But when it comes time for the advocates and wild horse lovers to sign we need to get a Community press release with everyone on board and get it out so everyone knows this needs all the signatures possible up until the last day in October. mar

      • Now I hear that Simone is writing one for the wild horses and burros…. Please ask her to bring it here first!!!!

      • Let’s just hope that burros are placed prominently in the petition. They are in much graver danger of extinction than the wild horse, which is a startling thing to realize.

    • That whitehouse/gov link will not work for me either. Tried it several times, also noticed that the number of people signing does not change and number of signatures very small usually petition number rise quickly. I sent an email to the gov’t petition site regarding the problem.

      • Yvon, if you have already signed a petition at the white petition site I noticed that when you reenter they have you as signed in down in the corner but you can’t hit the “sign this petition” button. I found that when I hit the “sign out” button and then closed the site and then went and signed back in all over again (a lot of work but if I can do it for a vendor who is selling my favorite pair of jeans I can sure as heck do it for the horses) then it allowed me to sign. Hope this helps someone who might be having trouble.
