Goicoechea Racked Up $674,591 Dinner Check at the BLM Wild Horse & Burro Trough

Eureka rancher has received $674,591 for “Wildhorse/Burro Control Services” from BLM

WANTED: Explanation from Assemblyman Pete Goicoechea, R-Eureka Nevada…Why all the BLM money, another “Slaughtergate?”

Independent American state senate candidate Janine Hansen charged today that Republican District 19 opponent Assemblyman Pete Goicoechea has a “startling conflict” in representing rural taxpayers after learning the Eureka rancher has received $674,591 for “Wildhorse/Burro Control Services” from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

“That’s a pretty staggering amount,” Hansen said. “It’s especially unsettling considering the money came from a federal agency whose ridiculous mismanagement of wild horses costs the taxpayers $75.8 million every year. But I guess that’s not so objectionable when you’re getting a piece of the pie.”

Hansen noted the discovered BLM payments to Goicoechea stretched from 2000 to 2003. She says in the interest of full disclosure and transparency Goicoechea should reveal the sources and amounts of any and all additional payments he may have received from the BLM or any other local, state or federal government agency or entity.

Hansen also noted that Goicoechea sponsored a bill in the last legislative session, AB 329, that, according to an Associated Press story, he introduced because he believes the 1971 Free-Roaming Wild Horse and Burro Act means “the BLM should take care of” wild horses and burros.

“If all this is true,” Hansen said, “it appears Assemblyman Goicoechea introduced a bill that could have forced the BLM to provide care and services for wild horses and burros in Nevada; the kind of care and services he may have been paid almost $700,000 to provide the BLM in the past.

“So that raises a question about exactly what ‘control services’ Mr. Goicoechea provided to the BLM in the past and what benefits he and/or his family and/or his business might have gained had AB 329 passed.”

Hansen said she wonders how Goicoechea can honestly represent the people in rural counties and their concerns over the mismanagement of public lands and wild horses by the BLM when he has been compromised by receiving so much taxpayer money from the BLM.

“I think the voters of Senate District 19 deserve answers and a lot more transparency on what appears to be startling conflicts of interests in these matters,” Hansen concluded.

  1. A good question…what ‘services’ was he providing? Why is it we allow this crap to go on? We have become a nation that just accepts that the politicians are dirty and don’t do a damn thing about it. Even if they find wrong doing will he ever be prosecuted? Will the BLM be held accountable by the Feds? Probably not on both accounts.

Washington D.C. stinks to high heaven. And we let it continue. It’s funny a GOP candidate for VP is among a group of politicians that has the most despicable poll numbers in the history of our country. 13% approval rating! And if you bring that up he laughs…cretin.

  2. Keep breathing Steve. You don’t have to accept dirty politicians. Continue to assemble the facts and your point of view. You can DEFINITELY be part of a concerned public who holds up the mirror and demands an explanation. Face to face. Stay tuned, and be ready.

As for “Mr. G,” I would say “oinka doinka,” but that would be an insult to the porcine species.

  4. Ely, Nevada. So many roundups. So many Federally Protected Wild Horses and Burros captured and removed from their Legal Herd Management Areas:

The wind project broke ground in August of last year, but the process has taken years, beginning in 2006. The Bureau of Land Management issued Pattern Energy its right of way in 2007

The celebration had several guest speakers, including a video message from Senator Harry Reid, Assemblyman Pete Goicoechea (R-District 19), White Pine County Commissioner Laurie Carson, American Wind Energy Association CEO Denise Bode and more.

Pattern Energy http://www.patternenergy.com/business/projects also donated $250,000 to county emergency medical services and fire district, $100,000 to the Great Basin College Foundation, $20,000 annually for the 20-year abatement period toward a fund specifically for programs for science, engineering and energy and $50,000 to the White Pine County library.

  5. So, again a Nevada “Rancher” turned dirty “Politician” so he could accept kick-backs from the federal government to do what? And what consequence to the BLM? Why are they never held accountable? When are they going to be investigated for their wrongdoings? This is terrible malificence to the wild horses which have been intrusted to their care by FEDERAL LAW and they continue to ignore it! How does this keep happening? I quite simply do not understand….

  6. The underground or Wild Horse Black Market seems to run very close to the surface and has not been well hidden. In the past investigations have been dropped because the involvement of government employees was so numerous as to cause a scandal that might have brought the agency down??? The Justice department saved their butts. This time around I hope no one gets saved by DC and they all will pay for defrauding the American Taxpayer and for the illegal funneling of wild horses and burros into the slaughter pipeline. We want real management based on science and maybe BLM cut loose permanently. The iceberg is now visible beneath the surface.
    It appears to be huge.

  10. Well when we hear complaints about the costly wild horse and burro program – we can cut more than a half million off. Wonder what more is bogus? And that is a sarcastic question.

  11. All of this corruption should be enough to put them behind bars , for a long long time ??? This is all the more reason to remove the whole sorry lot of them, replace them with people who actually know about horses and will take care of them in the manner that they should be taken care of !!!!
