After a video showing violent killing of horses in a Russian slaughterhouse was posted to YouTube last month, an online petition has been launched to ask for stopping the cruelty.
The video, posted on February 26, bears the title “Russian Race Horses Brutally Slaughtered for Sausage” and comes with the warning of having very graphic content. The video description reads: “The world needs to see the extreme brutality horses are suffering in Russia.”
Horses in the video are shown hammered on their heads repeatedly with sledgehammers inside the slaughterhouse as they drag themselves about the place.
“This is the most inhuman act I have ever witnessed,” reads the petition letter on Change.org, addressed to the Delegation of the European Union to Russia. “Every horse slaughterhouse I’ve seen has been violently abusive and this is beyond comprehension.”
The petition has received close to 9800 signatures to date and aims at getting over 10, 000 more to reach its goal of 20, 000 signatures in support of the cause. Earlier this month, Seattle Pi published a story about animal rights advocates’ condemnation of the recent legislature in Oklahoma that would allow the slaughter of horses for human consumption.
As noted by the Activist Post, producing horse meat has legally remained banned in the US since 2007, though early this month it was reported that USDA was set to allow horse slaughter in the US, starting with a New Mexico horse slaughterhouse in the next few months.

I didn’t even try to watch. I can’t get the visions of the ones I have watched out of my head as it is. I cannot stand it. My mind always goes back to 1991 in Dallas when three of my friends’ horses were taken right our of their stalls in our boarding stable. One was in the stall next to mine, and one was just across the barn isle. It was pure luck they didn’t take my beloved horse too. I will never get over the shock of that day.

That was the worst thing I have ever seen! I nearly vomited after seeing only a few seconds and it brought tears to my eyes to think of what those poor horses had to suffer while being terrified and torchered those people are not right in the head! This needs to be stopped!

What kind of ‘people’ do they get to work in these places – we are an evil, disgusting, cowardly species. Instead of doing the honorable and right thing, we take advantage of those who cannot speak or fight back – we’ve even done it to our own kind. I don’t think I can watch this, the very words turn my stomach and stop my heart. Again, I’ll say humans really ___. I hope karma gets us good one day.

I am betting pro slaughterers are thinking this only happens outside our borders. Animal Angels undercover work proves that even with USDA inspections there is rampant cruelty to horses before and during the process. There is no reason to open a slaugter house in America or allow our horses to cross the borders as the EU is barring the import of unpassported equines for meat the summer of 2013. I watched the video of elected government officials and he ignorance they showed made me think that my 11 year old daughter would have done a better job of researching the subject.
The sponsor of the House measure, Rep. Skye McNiel, said the bill would allow a horse slaughtering plant to open in the state and provide a humane option for unwanted, aging horses. The Bristow Republican said the sale of horse meat for consumption in the United States would still be banned, but that it could be sent overseas. Most anybody that has done very little research knows that young healthy horses are sought after for their meat and many emaciated or otherwise neglected horses are just used for fillers on the truck and most arent excepted for processing.
Why dont legislators enforce cruelty laws and prosecute? This surely must have something to do with the warehoused BLM mustangs located in OK..our national treasures nothing but the main course of a foriegnor?

It has everything to do with the wild horses that the BLM has taken off the range. If they really wanted to control herd size like they say, they could do it through birth control on the mares and/or gelding some of the stallions. They want the horses gone immediately so that their cattle rancher and mining company buddies can use OUR public land and pay them off. As usual, greed wins out over humanity. And that smarmy blonde lady from Oklahoma can say she voted the way she did to “save horses from cruelty”, but I would love to force her to watch this clip for about 7 hours straight, then show it to her children and tell them their mommy voted for this to happen.

This video hammers it home, literally. One of those makes had an axe and was using the maul side of it to beat that horse to death. Personally, i think that anybody who supports horse slaughter should be removed from society because they are dangerous, not fit to live among the decent people here. This includes our congressional reps who support this horror. There isn’t enough money in the world that can support the violent deaths of the horses.

I just have a question. How do these workers expect these horses to go anywhere if they keep hitting the horses in the head? I’m sorry after suffering a minor head injury from my car accident in 2007 this makes no sense.
I wonder what these people are like at home? After working under conditions like this I’d be afraid for my own safety in their presence.
This is as gruesome as the videos that Kudo puts up on occasion. That hellhole needs to be shutdown if not for the cruelty just exposed but how about unsanitary conditions.
These buttholes should just use a simple gun. It’s a lot faster and a whole lot less painful for the animal.

I couldn’t watch more than a few seconds, but I saw the conditions, I couldn’t see how many horses were in that place but there were many, more than several. There was also a lot of blood and body parts, it wasn’t even sanitary. I would imagine that some of the horsemeat that ended up labeled as beef came from places like this. Horrible and inhumane.
I believe that when we allow ourselves, or members of our society to behave this way toward other species, we lower our standards and become less humane even to other humans. We need to stop this as quickly as possible, not just to save the horses, but to save ourselves.

I think any lawmaker about to vote `NO’ to the SAFE Act should be made to watch these types of videos. If you believe this is so humane and the `answer’ to save the equine industry, then it shouldn’t bother you. You will never see Slaughterhouse Sue or D-bag Duquette showing videos like this or any at all. They dispute these are even real, which is ridiculous. If dogs or cats were killed like this in shelters there would be a major public outcry. Why don’t horses get the same consideration? Or any animal for that matter?

Those who voted no to the safe act also have no heart or mortal values. I doubt that these videos would even affect them. They would explain them away using animal rights actions as an excuse. They make false claims about the authenticity of the videos and you can Betty that they are the same lawmakers who are pushing for a gag order on factory farming abusers and violations. They would say that these are Russians and that it isn’t that way in America. Remember, they are already claiming that horse slaughter is more regulated here and is humane euthanasia…the lies are really eating me alive.. Let’s just phish harder to get the federal ban passed so that these atrocities don’t happen here and so that our food stays safe to eat.

It’s not even so much about food safety for me as it is just out and out barbaric and wrong. If they allow horse slaughter over here, I’ll not ever put meat of unknown origin on my plate again. I’m not a huge red meat eater at the best of times, but it will end there. I’m not the only one that thinks like this yet the dumbass cattlemen can’t seem to get it through their heads they are hurting their own industry by backing this.

I know I may come off as hypcritical when I don’t want animal abuse but made the statement that those who abuse animals should be hammered in the head. Sorry about that. I was just upset and angry. Problem is, what happened here is not far from this horrific cruelty in Russia and my guess is that it has happened here. And why is a foal, pregnant mare, blind or crippled equine trampled in a cattle truck any different than what is happening in Russia. Don’t think Romania, et al are different.

I thank the Lord every day that I did it with a vet and my horse’s head in my arms, with a family member that knew how hard it would be to do alone…..in fact the vet said, “you sure you want to be here?” I told him it was MY JOB to be there and respect my horse. He deserved dignity and was a marvelous spirit.

Didn’t watch – the description was more than enough. Laid awake last night thinking about the mare & foal in the kill pens (the FOIA that EWA had on their site). Luckily didn’t see the picture at the end. Just breaks my heart thinking about whats done to these animals. Unfortunately, all of us aren’t the ones who really need to see this! The ignoramuses in Oklahoma & Washington certainly do.

Over three years ago I sent a load of CD’s which I had copied from the films taken secretly at the plant in Canada, Bouvrys, to at least 30 of the Senators in DC trying to show them what was happening to US horses in Canada. I got one response back telling me that he would not support the last bill because he considered that would be taking away the right of a horse owner to dispose of their property as they see fit. Then when I found out that this senator was given over $300,000 from the various organizations such as the racing industry etc, that pretty much exposed these people for what they are. Like I have said before it’s the US Senate that has blocked every bill that has been introduced for several years, and they will block S.541 too.

I know that you all are bsolutely disgusted at this and you should be, but please understand this happens to billions of farm animals and even domesticated animals like dogs and cats every year! The only reason why this is happening is because we continue to be a big supporter of the meat industry even though it doesn’t match our core values! We can do so much to stop this by going on a plant based, vegan, vegetarian diet. We can only change ourselves and inform others of the truth. Salty tears fell as my heart sank deeply. As a Russian, specifically a Cossack, this video is more than a tragedy. It is a direct, home-grown attack on our history, culture and spirit. The horse is a beautiful, intelligent and symbolic animal and, for over a millennium, contributed well to Russia’s society and media. In fact, there is a statue in St. Petersburg, where the horse represents Russia (our country is shaped like one), stomping Lucifer (represented by a dragon) in turn ridden by Tsar Peter the Great.
I love horses, as they are our friends and even teachers. I believe they communicate with God and have healing powers. They are no-nonsense beings with hearts more precious than gold, and evil human nature is the virus, or rather the dragon, that needs to get stomped and forever stay that way. Furthermore, horses, to opine, are an incarnation of the Russian soul and character. «Different body, same soul,» a regional saying goes. Thus, we humans should watch out! Completely heartless, greedy and dishonest fools, the Russians in the video are basically killing their own kind.
Horse slaughter is a sin and must end worldwide. We will fight the good fight and WIN.
