Documents Implicate Feds in Horse-Laundering Scheme
Winnemucca, NV…. On August 11th, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) notified a coalition of wild horse advocacy and conservation groups that it was “issuing a stop order” to helicopter wranglers hired to roundup hundreds of wild horses on USFS, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and tribal lands on the Ft. McDermitt Paiute Shoshone Reservation on the Nevada/Oregon Border and transport them to a slaughter auction.
The Forest Service’s decision to pull out of the roundup operation came after the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign and its parent organization, Return to Freedom, The Cloud Foundation and the Western Watersheds Project sent two letters to the USFS outlining the multiple ways in which a stealth agreement between the Service to conduct the operation violated federal law.
However, the Forest Service also informed the coalition that the tribe was proceeding with the roundup, and, in fact, had captured 277 horses and already shipped 130 of them to the Fallon Livestock Exchange as of yesterday afternoon. The Forest Service also stated that it also had “no specific information about whether any of those animals came off National Forest or outlying [Bureau of Land Management [BLM] lands.”
The participating agreement between the Forest Service and the Fort McDermitt Tribal Council and a separate agreement between the BLM and the Forest Service, previously authorized the tribes to push wild horses from public lands onto reservation lands for the purpose of capture and sale to a slaughter auction. The area in question is in close proximity to the BLM Little Owyhee Herd Management Area (HMA) where federally-protected mustangs live.
“The Forest Service and the BLM have a responsibility to protect unbranded horses in this roundup. It is well documented that horses from the Owyhee Complex range outside the HMA to the border of the Forest Service lands in question,” said Suzanne Roy, AWHPC director. “Although the Forest Service has issued a ‘stop order’ to the helicopter wranglers in response to our legal letters, serious questions remain about whether the federal government continues to be complicit in this shady operation where federally-protected wild horses are headed to a slaughter auction this Saturday. ”
“The Forest Service and BLM should be equally as concerned about these horses as we are if the are to uphold their legal responsibilities under the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act,” said Neda DeMayo, President of Return to Freedom, AWHPC’s parent organization. “In our negotiations, the Forest Service was willing to guarantee that any unbranded horses captured in this operation would be returned to federally-protected wild horse areas. This responsibility does not end now. We call on the BLM and the Forest Service to ensure that no unbranded wild horses captured from public lands around the Fort McDermitt reservation are sold at the auction for slaughter.”
“The Forest Service cannot just wash its hands of this situation now, after putting in place a stealth agreement to roundup these horses and send them to slaughter, and after admitting that the tribes have been working ‘for days’ to push horses off public lands and onto tribal lands toward the traps,” said Ginger Kathrens, Executive Director of The Cloud Foundation. “This is a betrayal of the American public and our wild horses. This entire matter must be investigated and the sale of all unbranded horses must be halted immediately.”
Today the groups sent another letter to the Forest Service demanding that officials verify the origin of all horses sent to auction by the tribe and prevent the sale of any unbranded horses at the Saturday auction. They also released the agreement between the Forest Service and the Tribe, which documents the intention of the FS to turn all horses – branded and unbranded – to the tribe, as well as use tax dollars to pay for the roundup and to ship the horses for slaughter.

Find a federal judge and and report to the FBI and get something done by authorities. They cannot all pass the hat! Pressure the FBI and Secret Service! This involves crossing state lines and money and fraud against the public. Federal LAw enforcement must act.

I am so disgusted with these so-called civil servants, whose duty it is to carry out the mandates of a civil society – setting the standard for ethical and legal activity has gone by the wayside long ago. I am also disgusted and disappointed woith the shoshone tribe who has set aside their ancient tie with the horse to leave way for the greed of the w#**@e man tp control them again. Who stands to profit? The transporters, the auction, the kill buyers.
The appeals and hearing board for the DOI will hear of this today.

Living in Colorado I have listened to this water shortage excuse for so long I just laugh anymore-for years I have read about fracking and the privatizing of water – read these articles to see what I mean~~~~and it won’t be long before some government group says NOT enough water-air-food-resorces for all humans-need to start a roundup–OH excuse me Hitler already tried that-consentration camps come to mind and I think our own government tried that with the Indian already too-reservations come to mind. We are on a slippery slope folks – feel it in my soul.

I’m afraid advocates were given a song and dance about cancelling the roundup. Apparently they temporarily cancelled the helicopter stampede that would have brought in 200 more horses. From the video, the narrator said horses look to be in very good shape, there are many mares and foals which will bring a good amount of money. Tribes cannot be raising horses to dump them in the slaughter pipeline. Truckloads of Piute horses have been saved before and now they need to be saved again. The Forest Service of the USDA is complicit and more than likely so is the BLM and DOI.

I always knew it was a matter of time before they figured out how to get the wild horses into the slaughterhouses. I am sure that this was planned out a long time ago by the Indians and the BLM. They just are so tricky in their actions against defenseless wild horses. This really makes me sick. This is major news and it needs to be broadcast all over the country.

Thanks for sending this info to the media. How can we get the feds to uphold the Wild Free Roaming Horse and Burros Act? These horses belong here on the public lands! The few cattle and mining leases and some Tribes, are the few perpetrators at making a buck per pound for horse meat! Please quit killing our Horses! Investigate the lease holders, mining companies, who are decimating the grounds these beloved horses have existed for more than 700,000 years! I’m sick, I’m native american, and I’m ashamed of any tribes involvement!

This reminds me of the BLM hearing in 2009 when advocates were told how welcome we are at any roundup and at the very moment they were saying this they were conducting that secretive roundup. Seems like this is what was going on last week with Joan. Way to go BLM.

Collusion strikes again. Our government is bought and paid for by fracking, oil, mining, reservation. What we want doesn’t matter. What we see wrong isn’t taken into account.
Just an FYI–years ago when I first got my horse he was starved by the stables feeder. We knew he was losing weight but. O one could figure out why til the day my horse bit me. My horse wasn’t the only victim–this guy starved about a dozen horses. His response when asked why–they were rich white folks and I didnt like them. In my case I was a teen. Get over yourself. I don’t what reservation he came from. I confess to being totally ignorant of one tribe from another. I do know he was native American.
So no my experience as a kid taught me that not all native Americans prize horses. There are some really awful people out there without regard to race, creed or color.

No one was there. We have no one in the field. Not a credentialled journalist either. Do you know how far Little Owyhee is from Fort McDermitt? They have our horses at Fallon. This needs to be stopped by a Federal Law Enforcement Agency! This is not over. Please get someone out there and stop this. Threats from us only embarrassed the Forest Service. This is BLM’s baby and they will do whatever they want. We have to demand the enforcement of the 1971 Wild Free Roaing Horse and Burro Act. NOW. FBI, Federal MArshalls, Secret Service, all need to be put on the spot and one of them must come forward and end this with arrests.
If no one gets arrested for this then we need a judge who will demand the law be enforces by one of these law enforcement entities. We need to take out horses into public Custody where ever they are in the wild or in captivity. Find law enforcement and a federal judge that will act.

Mar I believe there is an advocate trying her best to fight this. McDermitt is just off the Owyhee HMA. This HMA is the subject of a lawsuit. It is confusing to know what is going on.

I am in touch with all I know. I am totally concerned as this is one of the most blatant acts of betrayal and fraud that BLM etc have perpetrated on our wild ones and the American public. This is my concern when people do nothing because other causes are more attractive to them or other people do not respond and rise to the level of outrage and offense we must share and aim at these liars and thieves. The greed and corruption seems to be getting more prolific every day! It’s horrifying and unbelievable, at the same time, what our American wild horses are being subject to and somehow we have no voice in the matter?! This is frightening and terribly sad, if their allowed to proceed with the auction. These horses are no different than the grizzly bear, the mountain lion and the wolf – they’re our heritage. It’s time those in authority listen to the public and take the action needed to protect our national treasures.

Everyone that passes is a beauty of love , one more magnificent then the other , I have witnessed this many times on the Nevada Desert !!!!!! I have returned to them for 20 yrs just see them !!!! My husband and I go off roading all over Northern Nevada, he goes dirt biking riding and sees herds on tops of mountains,,,we find herds and take tons of pictures of them. I have been following wild horses for 15 years…beautiful to see them wild and free….

I knew they would find a way to remove and kill these magnificent and protected animals, even when they (USFS) said it was “cancelled”, I said…..they’ll find a scum, covert way to do it anyway.
This goes back to the original 1971 Act and it’s loopholes, such as migratory nature of the mustangs and wild burros, multiple agencies in charge and other problems with the Act.
Very sad, but I’m not surprised.

Try filing a complaint with the justice department – different administrative branches of the government don’t always agree. Can’t hurt, might help. Try the FBI too…as whacky as these ideas sound, they couldn’t yield less than our other efforts. both agencies are charged with enforcing federal laws…

Right this minute there are 417 horses that have been caught up in a large tribal roundup who await their fate at a slaughter auction in Fallon, Nevada. Many of the horses are branded and “owned” by the Ft. McDermitt Paiute Shoshone Tribe, and sadly, there is nothing legally that I am aware of that can be done to save them.
But among the tribal horses are an undetermined number of unbranded horses – taken from public lands – these horses have been captured off Forest Service and BLM public land. There is no way to distinguish wild horses from tribal horses if they are unbranded. Unbranded horses captured from our public lands are sitting at the slaughter auction waiting to be purchased by kill buyers.
You must take every single possible step to ensure that federally protected wild horses are not sold at the slaughter auction by confiscating ALL unbranded horses from the auction IMMEDIATELY.
This can’t wait! The auction takes place in a little over 24 hours from now. What do you and your agency plan to do about this? To do nothing and allow publicly owned wild horses be sold at this auction is a very very very serious violation of the 1971 Congressional Wild Horse and Burro law.

Accidently ran across this … it shows that the USDA just gave the Ft McDermit (who sold hundreds of wild horses at auction a couple of weeks ago – some to kill-buyers) and other tribes a large grant of money … no doubt in my mind that it was part of the “agreement” that caused those horses to go to auction.
