“It’s ‘Feel Good Sunday’ and today we tender a means in which you can personally make a difference in the ongoing, bloody war against predatory horse slaughter. Some of us old timers have been at this for many, many years and in a recent discussion with Jerry Finch of HfH it became glaringly obvious that we almost seem to be in the same position that we were over a decade ago in this fight except the only change is/are the people we are fighting. Somehow the old adage, ‘If you always do what you always did you will always get what you always got!’ popped out of both our mouths about the same time.
It’s time to do something different and the time to do it is NOW. We two Texans have taken the pledge, below, and it’s a tough pill to swallow but if it makes a difference for the horses it goes down pretty sweet.
Join us individually, as a group and hopefully as a nation; the horses are dying and we need to put an end to it once and for all. Keep the faith.” ~ R.T.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To the American Cattle Rancher,
Enough.
We tried to reason, we spent our money in courts fighting you, we’ve taken those we’ve managed to save and watched our government bow to the horse slaughter industry. We’ve filed bills in Congress and watched them die, spent a ton of money trying to stop the roundups and slaughter, yet it continues unabated.
One hundred seventy thousand horses a year, 472 a day, one every 4.8 minutes, die in a slaughterhouse. Year after year, we have sought to bring it to an end. No one listened, most of the cattle industry laughed at us.
It’s time for that laughter to end.
The beef industry has always been in full support of the horse slaughter industry. You’ve worked hand-in-hand with the AQHA and the BLM as they push for horse slaughter, and your influence in all 50 state Farm Bureaus has been consistent. You’ve taken every word from the paid propagandists and force feed them to the Farm Bureau members.
You aren’t. You are horse killers, wanting nothing better for the horses of America than you want for your cattle – to be slaughtered and served to the consumer for a profit.
Now it’s time for the 80% to strike back in a way that will force you to listen.
Starting now, we pledge that we will not buy nor consume another bite of beef until the S.A.F.E Act is passed and signed into law. No hamburgers, no BBQ beef, no steak, no fast food with beef. And we ask that every person that is against horse slaughter do the same.
Beef is out until the S.A.F.E. Act is in.
You brought this on yourself. In all your wisdom, you decided it was to your benefit to promote horse slaughter and without thinking, accept the lies you were told as truth. You accepted with open arms the stories about “the slippery slope.” You believed and promoted, without question, the “unwanted horse” propaganda.
You support the extreme minority who make money killing America’s horses instead of listening to the 80% of Americans who want it to stop. You have turned your back on the very people who buy the beef you sell and you expect us support you.
That support ends – NOW. Weep, cry, scream, do whatever you want to do, even tell us that it doesn’t matter, but as of this moment, BEEF is off the table.
Our Pledge:As an American horse advocate, I pledge that I will not buy beef of any kind until the SAFE Act is passed and the American horse is free from the threat of slaughter!Not a dollar of my money will enter your pocket until you and your supporting organizations take the action necessary to support and pass the SAFE Act.
I have been a vegetarian since I came to these sites and learned about slaughter and GMO and all that is added and fed to animals. My huband and son have continued to eat meat and have not wanted to hear about the slaughter process-until horse meat was found in meat over seas-then they stared to read labels and would not buy anything marked canada,mexico,usa-both have stated that if horse slaugher resumes they will quite all meat, for fear of contamination. This morning they have taken the pledge with me.
Signed and shared. I am a vegetarian working towards being vegan. This was easy, and if I may add, ethically correct. May I also suggest that those of you supporting this petition consider the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle and never return to eating cow or any other animal for that matter. Remember, when you eat meat, you support cruelty and environmental damage. Signing this petition may be the start of something much greater and healthier for many!
Absolutely, Susan. After being a vegetarian for 8 years, now vegan for over a year, it is incomprehensible why I ever ate meat. I had to block out that “chicken” or “beef” was ever a living creature with a personality and as much as desire to live as me. In my cholesterol laden brain, I thought of this bloody flesh I was using as just an “ingredient.” Since then I have learned about the incredible amount of environmental damage – more than car pollution – caused by the manure in feedlots and the massive amounts of GMO animal feed grown to support this unsustainable addiction.
I signed the pledge – frankly the thought of what our horses go thru just makes me aware of what the other animals go thru – any of them. The horsemeat in the beef in the EU made it that much more urgent.
Very good idea – possibly hitting the farm bureau & beef “promotors” in their pocketbooks might actually raise a tad of awareness.
I’m lucky in that I live rural and have the opportunity to buy locally grass fed beef that is also slaughtered at local slaughter houses that have nothing o do with Big Beef. I’m Anemic and have Celiacs so my Doctor sys I need it in my diet. I was a strict vegetarian for over 10 years. I am lucky to know local small time farmers and I do support them. Some of them still use Draft horses for working their fields. I have vowed not to buy Factory slaughtered anything since I became aware of the issue with Equine Slaughter and the Genocide against our wild and free horses. This was an easy pledge to make.
Lamb is also a good choice if you can find it locally and grass fed.
I had another idea- I know that Jerry asked for imput on what we could do-I don’t know how this petition will be delivered to the people who need to see it-but I do know that alot of horse advocates go out and take pictures of all aspects of our horses-how about we get blown up photos of the whole process the wild horses free-being rounded up-shipped hot and sweaty-the condition in the hma’s-then the slaughter process from the sales ring-shipping to slaughter-and the horror of the slaughter houses-then line the halls of congress, the senate, Washington DC, they are our buildings after all-line the floor with them, put them on stands-so accessable that passers by cannot ignor them. I would guess that most of our officials only know about these things what they are fed by pro slaughter-put it directly in their faces and see if they can ignore the truth then.
If the pictures were there just while the petition were delivered-could make quite an impact, and show the real reason for the S.A.F.E. act. Just my thought
Not trying to pee on the parade, but everyone knows that most of the beef that is killing our wild equines is exported…right?
The protectionism of Human Consumption Horse Slaughter (HCHS) by Farm Bureau isn’t about protecting horsemeat, it is really about preventing humane standard enforcement or investigation of traditional US meat livestock…right?
I agree…boycott.
But for most of the meat that Americans eat, you’d do better to boycott the US Dairy Association. And frankly…I think that is a good idea too.
In the meantime, please take the time to read the story at this link:
http://www.sfgate.com/news/science/article/Desert-tortoise-faces-threat-from-its-own-refuge-4759443.php
Why do I post this link?
(1) US Fish and Wildlife and BLM aka DOI are involved;
(2) They got money to run a conservation area (sound like HMAs?);
(3) Now they say they are broke (like too many starving, thirsty, nonHMA wild equines and LTH);
(4) THEY ARE GOING TO KILL ALL THE TORTOISES THAT ARE NO LONGER ENDANGERED BUT STILL ON THE THREATENED LIST BECAUSE THEY’VE RUN OUT OF MONEY BUT CAN STILL SPEND MILLIONS, REPEAT MILLLIONNNSSSSS MAIMING, KILLING, SENDING TO SLAUGHTER OR LTH TO BUDDY, TEAT SUCKING GOV’T PIRATE…err PRIVATE CONTRACTORS OF DOI, USDA OF OUR WILD EQUINES .
I say, write your Congressperson and Senators and say….ummmmmm DOI appears to have incompetents in charge, then give examples of the 1971 Act wild equines and now the Desert Tortoise. No money???? 60 mil for wild equines with no place to go and you are going to murder hundreds, thousands of tortoises for a couple of mil??????????
Somebody get these morons a 6th grader with basic math skills!
I think thise AP story, featured in more than a few legitimate newspapers is important to our cause. It highlights the irrational, incompetent thinking of those government agencies in charge of the life and death fates of our resources, wildlife and us.
Saw 2 BookTV/C-SPAN features of DOJ and FBI this weekend and I am literally scared to death about this country’s future with evil and/or incompetents navigating OUR future.
I understand where your hearts are coming from. Too bad, if you like steaks, hamburgers, etc., (not all people are vegans) that you can’t choose to buy it from us. We ranch, we have a cow/calf operation; and we own our land. I TOTALLY AGREE THAT ALL BLM LAND SHOULD BE USED ONLY FOR THE HORSES, AS IT WAS MEANT TO BE. Unfortunately, we are lumped with those people. I know R.T. knows us as different as ‘the cattle ranchers that use BLM ground, and are for horse slaughter’. We are neither. Our cattle are grass fed, NO GMO products, no steroids, no small pens. The graze freely in the hills and meadows. The people we sell our calves to finish on grass range, and have the same philosophy as we do. They are killed humanely by their own processing. We do not agree with horse slaughter. I do wish there was more help; be it from vets or government, or whatever…that there would be a place for our horses when there is nothing more that can be done to humanely euthanize them. We don’t have that problem since we have a ranch, and have vets that are so helpful to us. Our horses are our friends, some have been like family, (I’m not kidding here) and it about kills us to have to put them down. But we do, for them. And then we bury them at our ranch. I’m only saying this here, for you to remember that there are people that do it right. I know your cause is desperate. I fight for that cause too. That so far, is the glorious thing about our country, you all have your right to voice what you will, as I do also. Please remember in your fight for the horses, to place somewhere in the heart, that no all ranchers, or cattle raisers are bad. Thank you.
To cattle haters. You do not know me. I know R.T. does, and I’m sure he does not include myself or my family in this example of what ranchers are. I ask you read this with an open heart and mind. I do understand the measures in which you are tying to take to save the horses. To end slaughter. We raise cattle. BUT, we own our land, we pay our taxes. I am TOTALLY AGAINST CATTLE PRODUCERS USING, LEASING, WHATEVER, BLM GROUND THAT SHOULD BE HELD SOLEY FOR THE MUSTANGS. My feeling is, I have to pay for my land and it’s taxes; so should they. I realize you are not going to eat beef. But please know, not all ranchers are bad. Our cattle are grass-fed, grazing freely in hills and meadows, not in feed lot pens or BLM ground. We do not use steroids, they are COMPLETELY GMO FREE, no bad stuff or poisons, and so very well taken care of. The people that buy our calves are also grass fed finishers. They have their own place where they humanely ‘kill’ the cattle. Just as you are tired of people not understanding slaughter, I am tired of people thinking we are ALL evil people. I understand your goals. They are mine too., but I of course could not sign this. Too bad if you like to eat steaks and hamburgers (good and nutritionally sound meat) you couldn’t buy it form us – my son has started a meat business. Our sons have the same thoughts as we do, as do our grandchildren. I realize we are probably some of the few. I hate feed lots, and I know there are people that should not own cattle, just as there are people that should not own horses. So I ask this: when you are on your mission, and speaking out against the American Cattle Rancher; please in the back of your heart, remember that there are a few of us that are good, honest, and totally caring for our cattle people. Thank you. Thanks R.T. for the voice.
I only eat locally raised, grass fed beef and pork from a local dealer. I don’t hate you.I hate factory farming; and using public lands that have been designated for another species, while trying to wipe out that species by claiming they are using up our natural resources. These lands belong to the people and 80% of the people are for the horses. We need more local family farms and less industry.
I joined up a while back. I’m not supporting the beef industry. Although I don’t see this hurting those western rapists that use public lands fo r profit because only about 3% of the beef here comes from those cows. They use or land to grow cattle to sell their meat overseas. They do not contribute to our food supply…not something that people think about when buying meat. Hell, packaging keeps them from thinking about that meat being an animal at one time…before it’s murdered. Give me a good vegetarian lifestyle. It’s healthier.
