Obama’s BLM Continues Assault on American Wild Horses over Holiday Weekend

BLM's Wild Horse Harvesting Machine by John Holland

Obama’s BLM Wild Horse Harvesting Machine by John Holland

While the bulk of Americans give thanks and embrace family traditions from years gone by a small group of elite Federal agents and specialized contractors plot, terrorize, capture and destroy federally protected wild horse herds which embody to all Americans traditional western heritage, freedom and family.

Sanctioned by the Obama Administration in an effort to support yet another cloudy and failing agenda, the BLM is ripping some 700+ wild horses and burros from an area granted to them to live forever free and unharassed by Congress in 1971.

While the U.S. celebrates the tradition of family solidarity and Thanksgiving the helicopters roar over the heads of helpless family bands of wild horses who in only a matter of minutes will never see their herd members and babies again.

Since Thursday, November 21st,  570 wild horses have lost their lives of freedom and the wild equine will know no holiday this weekend as the Obama Wild Horse Harvesting Machine begins operating their trap #3 in the Manuel Gap area of their Adobe Town & Salt Wells wild horse decimation operation.  Three horses have been killed since the assault began.

Although no horses were tormented on Thanksgiving Day some 17 mares with 16 foals were torn apart from their families on the day prior to the holiday.

700 equine souls is the target for this ruthless harvest but as the BLM has proven in the past, once pumped up and with dollar signs in the eyes of their contractors, more innocent equines may succumb to the ‘good ole boys’ grazing agency’s wild horse eradication program.

The private cattle subsidized by taxpayers increase on federal public land while the protected wild horses and burros are removed, forever.

The embarrassment of Obamacare is nothing compared to the destruction of Obama’s LaLa Land in the West…an agenda of special interests, abuse, deceit and abject destruction.

America has, again, lost a little luster as the helicopters continue to fly over the heads of the innocent icons of freedom and family.  It’s a sad day for horse and human alike.

  3. The inhumanity seems endless. The ‘death toll’ is yet to be realized though as the horses are being stampeded in freezing temperatures. The BLM would have you believe that the horses are made to withstand the frigid wet cold and in most part they are. Horses have a ‘fur’ with an undercoat like other animals made to withstand rain, snow etc but when a horse is stressed and chased they, like all of us, begin to sweat. The undercoat is now wet as the moisture is coming from a different direction than nature intended. The wet undercoat freezes next to the skin and the insulation of the animal is compromised.

“Besides the fact that the natural thermoregulatory mechanisms can only be fully utilized when a horse is kept in their species-appropriate living conditions, there is an anxiety and stress factor that horses inevitably experience when cut off from their basic needs and kept in ways unnatural for this species (stabling, separating from equine companions, forced exercising, lack of continuous fiber uptake, etc.). This stress also makes them less capable of coping with cold.”

    • Louie, have you uncovered grounds sufficient for a class action suit against the BLM? It seems a good case could be made that much is being done against the letter and the intent of the original law, including last-minute amendments, backroom bargaining, spurious taxonomic changes to justify removal of burros, and absolute unconcern over the NAS report, among other things. Obviously petitions and outrage fall on deaf ears and the “machine” continues on. Is a class action suit a possible way “we, the people” can be heard?

They captured them all by Weds. night so even though they didn’t fly on T-Day, they processed them and then hauled 22 foals to Palomino Valley and then when some witnesses realized what had happened, BLM took 22 wet mares to P/V to pair up with the foals. This was supposed to be a capture/treat with PZP and release roundup and there was NO reason to take those foals to P/V and away from their mothers. Eventually they returned the 22 mares and 21 of the foals back to the Pine Nut HMA but by then the foals and mares had been exposed to who knows what diseases (strangles was bad that year), not to mention the unnecessary stress of removal and trucking them twice. Did they figure nobody would be watching since it was Thanksgiving? You betcha!

  15. I have posted this before but here it is again since so many ask how can the BLM/USFS get away with what is obviously breaking the federal law of the United States?

Are our government agencies ABOVE the law?
Apparently they think they are and have declared this in an official document.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has publicly published the statement that they are above the law and the congressional LAW DOES NOT PERTAIN TO THEM! BLM stated (see link below): “The … [Congressional] Act …is not pertinent to the overall management of the wild horse and burro populations by the BLM and USFS. In general, it protects the wild horses and burros from such actions by the general populous.”

So BLM is telling us that the laws of the United States Congress are written for the general public and that BLM and USFS do not have to follow the law. Plain and simple that IS what they are saying.

BLM policies are simply plans and decisions that have been made by the BLM and are ONLY policies and plans and decisions – nothing more. They are not laws of the United States. Any policy established must be within the outline of the umbrella of the law it is required to follow. A policy is nothing more than a plan and is illegal if it does not follow the law of the United States.

I was taught that the law was to be followed and that if it needed to be changed (and many do) then that was the right and responsibility of Americans to do so but for any agency to disregard the law for political and financial reasons was illegal and TREASONOUS.

These round ups actually were accelerated in the beginning of the Bush administration and the decisions are primarily Congressional in origin. The round ups are part of the tidal wave of the privatization of public assets which began over a decade ago, and are not limited to public lands. You divert the attention from the real causes when you drag the President into a process which he has little control over. He was elected as president, not KING.
And who knows how many wild horses went to slaughter after the Burns amendment was passed?

“In 2001, after decades of failed herd management policies, the BLM obtained a 50% increase in annual budget to $29 million for implementation of an aggressive removal campaign.

In 2004, the 1971 Act was surreptitiously amended, without so much as a hearing or opportunity for public review, opening the door to the sale of thousands of wild horses to slaughter for human consumption abroad.”

    http://www.habitatforhorses.org/a-clearer-view-on-the-dilemma-of-wild-horses-and-the-blm/
    By Robert Bauer
Mr. Bauer is a well-known wildlife biologist and long time advocate of the wild horses and burros in the West

“The horrors of the roundups, witnessed by myself, stab the hearts of many. These roundups are downplayed by the BLM as if it were a spectator sport to those who have witnessed them. The question has been posed, as it was during the Wassuk roundup, if those watching were enjoying the “gather” as though it were a baseball game, or a Broadway show. The conditions through which they are rounded up are many times horrendous, however, not to mention the manner in which they are rounded up.”

“I am aware that there are many facets to this battle, but differences must be laid aside, once and for all, along with the possible desire for fame or fortune, to win. Our hearts must be solely on the lives and freedom of these wild ones. It must burn in us so much that their well being is our only motive, nothing more. Each of us must examine our hearts in this respect. The wild horses and burros are just this, wild, and the conditions in which they thrive in, no matter how mild or harsh is part of the beauty of their existence. This is true of any form of wildlife. Taking them out of this environment is not only destructive to their lives but also to the ecosystem of which they are a vital part.”

“Together with one mind and one heart this onslaught against the wild horses and burros can be stopped, and their freedom secured, wild, free, and untouched, in the numbers that only nature and its mechanisms dictate. This must be our only focus!”

But to do as this suggests would require changing the law, since the BLM/USFS are expressly directed therein to manage the herd populations to keep them within established ranges. Adobe Town has been recognized on numerous occasions as having nationally significant and threatened natural-ecological-geological features and for potential inclusion as a national park, underscoring the outstanding natural attributes of the area. • This is because the wilderness plan designation has nothing to do with the environment.

Sorry. When federal agencies should have access to the best environmental land management practices possible, but continue to do little other than employ the most environmentally destructive policies possible, we have to come to grips with the fact that to the federal government NEPA, the 1971 Act, and a number of other federal laws no longer exist. We’ve been staring this in the face, and we largely agree.

When we called for a moratorium on round-ups in 2009 and 2010, Congress provided funds for the NAS to review the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program. That study has been completed, and the study largely affirmed that the concerns citizens expressed are true.

Therefore, I suggest that we contact our representatives and let them know that we are concerned that Congress may have been circumvented through international treaties, thus removing the freedomes Congress provided for our wild horses. This is what the evidence supports. President Clinton’s E.O. 13112 issued on Februrary 3, 1999, should have had a statutory basis, and the only ones that would apply to our horses are the provisions in these two treaties.

Every single thing that has happened to our wild horses has been planned and very well concealed from the public for at least two decades—if anyone knows any old time must angers, it might be very information to find out who was paying them to kill off the wild horses in the 60’s. While it may have been ranchers, there is the possibility that oil tycoons that owned property in the West were out in front of this, and it is also possible that the 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act through a huge wrench in their plans. One document states that this bill made it so you couldn’t even kill

Save Scenic Red Desert Landscapes from Oil & Gas Drilling
We need your help to save the gorgeous Red Desert from oil and gas drilling
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is currently amending a land-use plan covering over 4 million acres in southern Wyoming, including about half of the spectacular Red Desert. The plan will determine which scenic landscapes will be protected and where heavy industry will be permitted.

Under the Bush administration, the most pro-drilling land-use plan in Wyoming history was approved for this area. It placed 14.6% of these public lands into a sacrifice-zone category (VRM Class 4). This category allows complete industrial destruction and does nothing at all to even reduce impacts to scenic landscapes.
Shockingly, the new plan amendment would expand the amount of industrial sacrifice zone from 14.6% to 57%, allowing full scale oil and gas drilling on millions of acres of public land.

Tell the BLM that scenic landscapes, wildlife habitats, and public recreation are important priorities too, and should not be sacrificed on the altar of corporate greed.
The BLM had improved management by designating a handful of areas as “Lands with Wilderness Character,” particularly in the spectacular and fragile badlands of Adobe Town. However, most of these areas would be allowed to be converted to full-scale gas fields under the new proposed plan. This is a waste of rare and precious desert wilderness.
Help us save endangered desert wilderness, historic trails of national importance, and scenic Red Desert public lands from industrial destruction. Take action today—public comment period closes November 13.

Especially, but not limited to Nevada, Wyoming, New Mexico, Oregon, all the states where this is happening. You can also contact Secretary Sally Jewell of the Department of the Interior, and Senator Wyden of Oregon. He is on the Senate Energy Committee and according to some has a lot of clout. They are about to pass Bill S258 which will increase cattle grazing rights, and decrease the public’s ability to comment on and influence the renewal of range leases. Which even FURTHER endangers our Wild Mustangs. This needs to be stopped, as it stands, and will likely be voted on Dec. 6th. Time is of the essence.

  23. I was given permission to post the following excerpts from a letter that was sent to BLM/Wyoming/Rock Springs Field Office.

BLM/USFS policies are plans and decisions and statements that have been made by the BLM/USFS and associates – nothing more. Any policy established must be within the outline of the umbrella of the law it is required to follow. A policy is nothing more than a plan and is illegal if it does not follow the law of the United States. Let me explain this point with a simple analogy: If the owner of a company wrote in the company policy that it was not required of the employees to wear seatbelts while driving on state roads but the state had a mandatory seatbelt requirement then the “no seatbelt” POLICY would not come under the umbrella of the law and thus the policy would become null and void with the law taking absolute precedence. Any policy written by the BLM/USFS that contradicts and does not come under the umbrella of the WILD FREE-ROAMING HORSES AND BURROS ACT OF 1971 is automatically and completely null and void with the Congressional law always taking precedence over the policy.

I request that the following alternatives be analyzed in the EIS:

Continue ranchers’ PRIVILEGE of public lands livestock grazing at taxpayer- subsidized, below-market rates IN EXCHANGE FOR tolerating the presence of wild horses on the private lands in the checkerboard and on the public lands where they have a RIGHT to exist. If ranchers do not agree to this arrangement, then their PRIVILEGE to graze livestock on the public lands at taxpayer subsidized rates, which is given solely at the DISCRETION of the Interior Secretary – shall be REVOKED.

I request an investigation into conflict of interest governing discussions and decisions for removals of the Checkerboard wild horses in Wyoming.

FEDERAL LAW CANNOT BE VIOLATED UNDER A CONSENT DECREE.

    • Ratified treaties are sovereign to federal law. This is why the 1997 Update of the International Plant Protection Convention (signed with reservations by President Clintonto to make sure the Convention did not intervere with national invasive species programs) is listed under federal invasive species law at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This law went into effect on October 2, 2005, and since the National Invasive Species Council included our federally protected horses and burros in their lists of alien (non-native) invasive species as pests that threatened plants, our wild horses and burros are consisted a threat to plants.

I suggest we contact the House Natural Resources Committee and express our concerns that our wild horses are being fraudulently removed from public lands based on allegations that they did not originate here and are therefore, inherently harmful.

I have reviewed several hearings in both the Senate and the House. The witnesses testimony is largely regurgitated from the same original source documents. No one has asked the essential question, how do you know for sure that the species you claim is an alien, non-native, invasive species. One witness said that it would be much better to just use the word harmful because the alien issue is not important and it would be less confusing if people just said harmful instead of invasive.

Wonder how far this would have gone if the expert at using science as a weapon against the American people frauds put horses and burros on a list of species known to be harmful?

      The point is this:

Rather than go through Congress to repeal the 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act, the Clinton administration used provisions in international treaties that linked that Alien Species Piece, Article 8 (h), to the 1997 Update to the Plant Protection Act.

This is why groups like the Sierra Club are doing studies on the damage horse trails do to the land.

He picked her to run the show and although we hoped that she would bring a fresh insight and a little science and common sense to the brutal agency she has become nothing more than a talking head that spouts the same spew as those before her. Obama could have made a difference and an improvement for the wild horses and burros but he consciously decided not to and instead to follow another bullying, personal agenda on our public lands.

  31. This is nothing new folks. It is not Obama’s BLM. they have been rounding up and thinning herds for years. I myself bought a 4 yr old stallion from a BLM auction in Az. Captured 3 wks prior to sale in Nevada and transported to Az. Bought him 10 yrs ago. Gentled him, gelded him, did some training and sold him to someone who could take him further in finding a job than I could. In the year that I had him he put on 300 pounds and gained height and muscle. He was probably in a bachelor bunch and obviously not getting enuff to eat but with good hay and grain he thrived. Take that in to consideration. I do not think that a group of scattered horse lovers will be able to mount a battle against the lobbies of the cattle ranchers and others who want the horse off the land so they can move in. Someone has to organize, collect factual data and money, hire a lobbyist and become a force that Washington will listen to. It does no good to be a bleeding heart and write these comments without taking action. If nothing else go to a BLM auction and buy you a couple and turn them out on your property. Oh you can’t because the price of hay is ridiculously high!!! Horses can and will adapt to seeing people in their grazing areas and will not be bothered by oil wells. It is the big corporate cattle operations with the deep pockets that you need to fight against.. not the family rancher. Everyone write 1 letter to each of your senators and congress men and get 10 friends to do the same
