“Good evening ladies and gentlemen, we have just landed at Denver International Airport, where the local time is 9:45 PM. On behalf of outraged residents we’d like to draw your attention to the demonic blue horse rearing in rage on your left. His official name is Blue Mustang, but locals call him Blucifer. “
The 32-foot sculpture of a seemingly bloodthirsty bronco is the work of artist Luis Jiménez. Commissioned as public art for the airport and installed in 2008, the horse represents the wild spirit of the old American west. It has also come to represent death, destruction, and deluded debates.
Blucifer hadn’t even been unveiled when the bad vibes began — in 2006, Jimenez died after a section of the 9,000-pound sculpture fell on him and severed an artery in his leg.
Two years later, the beast that killed its creator went on display at the airport. The horse’s cobalt color, glowing red eyes, and fierce face immediately attracted public ire. In addition to railing against the Blue Mustang’s ugliness, Denver residents have voiced concerns that the horse is cursed due to its role in Jiménez’s demise.
Denver airport itself has attracted some wild conspiracy theories over the years. When it opened in 1995 — 16 months behind schedule and way, way over budget — a few of the more paranoid citizenry began asking questions. Why was it so expensive? Why the plethora of unmarked buildings? Could they have been built atop secret subterranean command bunkers for the New World Order? Why are the runways shaped like a swastika, sort of, if you look at them from above and cover some other buildings with your hand and squint a little?
The Blue Mustang, with its Horsemen of the Apocalypse feel, merely adds another element of intrigue to the cluster of conspiracies at Denver International. Despite the bad vibes and petitions for its removal, the hellacious horse continues to maintain its watch over the airport.

I’m glad to hear you mention the misproportioned fact. If anyone should know what Mustangs should look like, it would be you. Its a very poor representation of the horse on many levels.

Just Maybe it represents a reality call of the Horrors our Mustangs have endured ????? Maybe it should tell to us , we need to Unite in the Mustangs Honor?? We together can and will save them !!!!!! Maybe he tells to us this how we should feel about what those we pay to Protect and Preserve the Mustangs , in fact use that money to terrorize, maim and Slaughter them????????/ Wake Up Call ?????

Lvery time I go to the airport and see this Gross Statue it reminds me of poor taste and a bad example of Good art gone bad. This was white originally and looked great. I don’t get it and I live here…………….

Uh, it is Denver Bronco blue….The shame is it is a mustang. And probably how few people know that, or know that there even are mustangs in CO, or anywhere, and that they are harried by a govt. agency who work for us. No wonder the horse is angry. Too bad it isn’t tied to an airport information booth inside each terminal that educated travelers about wild horses and burros.

I live in Denver. I’ve never even heard the name Blucifer and I think the real question citizens had was who stood to profit most from the location (which many of us feel is almost in Kansas)? Lots of money was made by those who owned the real estate where the airport is located. Politics as usual.

Ah. Somewhere an outraged horse magician has summoned this evil spirit to plague the BLM and all other abusers of horses. We should all get postcards of it and proceed to warn them that this is the forerunner of the vengeance of the Mustangs on those who have betrayed them and taken their lands. 😉
