“Friend to Equines Sacked by News Network”
Jane Velez-Mitchell and her staff have been laid off due to budget cuts at CNN, ending her nightly program on the HLN network.
Her program, which aired for six years at 7 p.m. Eastern on the CNN sister network, ended Monday. Mitchell was told of the layoff on Tuesday, said an executive at CNN who requested anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss personnel matters. Twelve people, including Mitchell, were let go with this cut.
The show will be replaced temporarily by reruns of “Forensic Files.”
CNN Worldwide is in the midst of an 8 percent staff cut, a total of 300 jobs. An estimated 130 people have taken buyouts, with layoffs accounting for the remainder, the executive said Wednesday.
HLN’s future has been a subject of speculation recently, after CNN negotiated but failed to reach a deal with Vice Media over that company taking over some of HLN’s programming.

i would rather hear jane velez than nancy grace. nancy is so hateful to her guest on the show. she is always talking down about people who live in trailer parks and duplexes. people do the best they can. i want be watching anymore

I only watched when Jane was on too, but I was happy we had a friend in the propaganda territory advocating for the animal issues, but alas too much for mainstream media. Hope this gives her and the animals a much stronger voice in the future.

That is a shame. She is an absolute rock star of a reporter, and can really get to the heart of an issue…..especially when it comes to the cruelties heaped on animals. She is so good that I’ll bet she will land on her feet in a great position!!!

Jane Velez michell is a friend to Equines and to all animals , her reporting was precise, consise, and based on Facts, which we cannot say about the reporting of most of the reporting going on out there, I would only watch CNN when she was on also !!!!! And I think all of us here should let CNN know , we should everyone of us tell them !!!!!!!!

Sorry to read this. Maybe this door closing will open another. God does wink! Maybe she can pursue a career as a freelance investigative reporter focusing on the plight of animals and not have to deal with corporate agendas.

Jane Velez-Mitchell was no friend to horses. Her biased and factually false “reporting” on the NYC carriage issue was nothing more than advertising for the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages, to which she was a donor. The CBHDC has been shown time and time again by actual reporters at the New York Times, the Daily News, and the Post to be lying about basic facts about NYC carriage horses, and nobody in the NYC media really takes them seriously anymore. While the NYC media has appropriately started including carriage industry reps, stable tours, and equine vets and experts in addition to activists, JVM’s segments on the issue NEVER included carriage drivers or owners, or equine experts, save for one time where she allowed a written statement from the carriage association president, which she then trampled all over without anyone there to defend themselves. Her segments used carriage footage from cities other than New York. In the end, at one point a couple years ago, JVM was censured by the Society of Professional Journalists’ Ethics Committee for failing to disclose that she had donated to / headlined a fundraiser for the CBHDC, which was the subject of her biased reporting. Remember Keith Olbermann got fired from MSNBC for having donated to Democratic candidates he was reporting on!
I will not miss Jane Velez-Mitchell’s defamatory screeching and verbal abuse, both over the airwaves and in person at Columbus Circle. Her carriage horse “journalism” hurt horses more than it ever helped any in actual need. Thankfully, the real journalists out there have been reporting the truth for quite some time.

Can’t stand her, glad she’s gone. She’s so typical of the media these days: drama trumps facts, ratings trample the truth, inflammatory rhetoric sells product. In a word, she sucks. Her comments on the ill-fated proposed horse carriage ban show her ignorance.

I agree with thedrafthorse’s comments. How does a horse, working for a living, translate into abuse? Jane works for a living. Don’t you? Jane should be after the dog fighting and backyard abusers, not targeting the carriage horses in NYC who are in the public eye, daily. IF there is a genuine problem, please bring it to light.

Use YOUTUBE as a source? Well, how about visiting StopLiesSeeTruth’s channel or Sandi Bachom’s channel… Or, better yet, get off the computer and come to NYC and see the horses in person as Susan has!
Equine experts agree that the NYC carriage horses are healthy and well cared for and are NOT “abused.” JVM was NOT an equine expert.

People who must lie about horses are not “for” them, any more than someone who would lie about a person is “for” them. They are merely promoting their own personal biases. Virtually everyone with hands-on horse expertise, including veterinarians, equine professionals, horse council leaders and equine rescue representatives who have actually visited the stables have come out in support of the carriage horses. Unlike propaganda spewing know-nothings like Velez-Mitchell, these are the folks who understand horse health, behavior and temperament. And who also understand that sending them into an already over-burdened, under-funded rescue would put them in more danger than they”ll ever face on the streets of New York.

Jane is one of the few, if not the ONLY National mainstream news journalist who told the country about the plight of our Wild Horses and Burros. Most others won’t even touch it, and if they do, they don’t get it right. The viewing public has been kept pretty much in the dark about it….and it IS DARK.
It might be good for us to let CNN hear from us.

The plight of the wild horses: too many horses on the range, they have to be rounded up and their numbers reduced so the range isn’t overgrazed, but there’s no room for them in long term holding or sanctuaries. If they are not rounded up, the drought stricken range will be devastated. Not only would the horse’s suffer (and likely die) but so will the wildlife that shares the range — deer, antelope, rabbits, birds, etc. That’s the “plight”.
And Mitchell doesn’t have a clue.

How about rounding up the Privately-owned Cattle on Public land, Gail L. ? The ranchers pay next to nothing and are overgrazing the Public land. They out number the few Wildhorses by millions. The cattle have no right to be on Public land.

The rangelands, however, can easily sustain not only the wild horses and burros existing out there now, but also every one of those in holding facilities, which now number well over 40,000.
The truth is that every one of those wild horses and burros in holding facilities, if released back to the areas from which they were taken, along with those in the wild, would help bring the balance back to the rangelands, a balance that is so very vital!

Agency Sage Grouse Review Puts Thumb on Scale to Magnify Wild Horse and Burro Effects

Washington, DC — The method used by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to assess range conditions is seriously skewed toward minimizing impacts from domestic livestock and magnifying those from wild horses and burros, according to an appraisal by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). As a result, the BLM’s approach to range management targets scattered wild horses and burros while ignoring far more numerous cattle.
The agency’s assessment is part of a 2013 report on factors influencing conservation of the Greater Sage-Grouse, a ground-dwelling bird whose numbers have declined as much as 90% across the West and which is under consideration for protection under the Endangered Species Act. That report concludes that twice the area of sage grouse habitat is negatively impacted by wild horses and burros than the area negatively impacted by livestock. A PEER appraisal of the methodology found
BLM calculates the “area of influence” of wild horses and burros on sage grouse habitat based merely on their presence within Herd Management Areas in sage grouse habitat, while it considers livestock impact to have occurred only when livestock grazing allotments fail the agency’s Land Health Status (LHS) standard for wildlife;
If the agency used the same approach for calculating the area of influence of livestock within BLM grazing allotments on sage grouse habitat as it did for wild horses and burros, the area of influence for livestock would be roughly 14 times that given in the report and more than six times that of wild horses and burros; and
Within BLM’s own grazing allotment LHS database records, livestock grazing is cited as a cause of failure to achieve a land health standard 30 times more often than are wild horses and burros.
