Howard Lyman

Our guest tonight is  HOWARD LYMAN, who was featured in the documentary Cowspiracy and is the author of the books “Mad Cowboy”  and “No More Bull.”  After Howard stated his opinion in warning the public about the risk of Mad Cow disease on the Oprah Winfrey Show in April, 1996, he, Oprah and Harpo productions were sued by Texas cattlemen.

Until August 1997, cattle were routinely fed the remains of other cows.  The Department of Agriculture and the FDA banned the practice, fearing the spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), better known as Mad Cow Disease.  But it remains legal to feed cows “rendered” — dead and ground up — parts of certain animals, including the blood of other cows, despite the fact that this practice may allow deadly illnesses to enter the food chain.

Howard is a 4th generation family farmer (and vegan) from Montana.  After 20 years of operating a feed lot, he sold his ranch and started working for farmers in financial trouble.  He was a lobbyist in Washington and ran for Congress in 1982.  Howard is the former Director of the “Beyond Beef Campaign,” past President of both the International Vegetarian Union and EarthSave International, and is currently President of Voice for a Viable Future.”

“Howard Lyman is fighting not only for our health but for our nation’s sanity as well.”  – Studs Terkel

  1. Hmmm, what a surprise! More lies..many of us already know the results of this process. No one has any idea what has gone into the animals whose meat is available in grogery stores. The egg industry too. I buy fresh eggs from a local farmer. I can visit his farm any time to view his chickens, their food source and their environment. Money talks and bs walks. You have to be your own advocate. You can’t even trust the Dept of Ag God forbid someone would lose a few bucks. Its like everyone for themselves!

  2. I have read “Mad Cowboy” by Howard Lyman and I would highly suggest “everyone” read it – it is a real eye-opener!

    • geri, thanks once again.
So this is how the anti-nature, anti-wilderness group is spinning their story! Sounds like the typical “use it up before someone else does” greedy corporate program. Hopefully, most of us (normal every day people) are smart enough to see through it. At least I hope so. Seems Congress (our wonderful elected politicians) is making several attempts to push through laws to kill off more wolves. Isnt it interesting that just as these animals start to become successful after being re-introduced – they have to be “””managed”” right back to extinction? Then look at what is being done to our wild horses & burros! Same thing…

      • Thank you Maggie – and I read a while back, scientists want to bring back dinosaurs, (we can’t take care of the animals we have) what!! dinosaurs have more meat? We may just see who ends up eating who.

  3. I haven’t heard anything bur good interviews on this radio show but THIS one is one of the BEST and most informative … every person should have to hear it and/or read his book … it should be mandatory reading in school too and it should be mandatory for ALL politicians to hear and answer to! I love his term “cowburnt” … I have seen our public lands “cowburnt” and knew exactly what he meant when he said it.
