EAST MARLBOROUGH >> Lily, the 20-year-old horse pelted 130 times by paintballs has found a mate.
The 20-year-old horse has been moved from a rehabilitation stable at the 700-acre New Bolton Center to a recovery barn in Chester County. There, it has found a horse named Anita who also has vision problems.
Louisa Shepherd, New Bolton Center spokesperson, said the two horses have been getting along great, eating grass together.
Lily gained statewide attention after the attack on March 14 at New Holland Stables. A criminal investigation is ongoing into the horse’s mistreatment, and a $10,000 reward has been offered for information bringing those responsible to justice.
Phillip S. Price, 65, of Rhode Island, has been charged with animal cruelty, handling animals without a license and importing animals without an interstate health certificate in connection with the case.
Dr. Nikki Scherrer, New Bolton Center ophthalmologist, said Lily has improved vastly since the paintball attack.
“The area where we removed (Lily’s) right eye is basically healed,” she said. “The left eye gets a little more comfortable each day. The eye opens up a little bit more each day and she has less tearing.”
Lily is still underweight, Scherrer said, adding she expects to be treating the horse for another month or so.
Anita, the horse Lily has come to grow fond to, has a cancerous tumor in her right eye. Her right eye was removed to save her life, Scherrer said. New Bolton surgeons did post-operative chemotherapy injections to treat any possible cancer, and so far has no re-growth of cancer.
Scherer said Lily’s life will be much more comfortable with a companion.
“(Lily) doesn’t need a buddy, but it is much nicer to have a companion to follow around to make (her) feel comfortable. Anita is a fantastic pasture buddy. I knew Anita would make a solid companion.”
Shepherd said Lily’s location is close to the New Bolton Center, but it will not be revealed.
“We are afraid people will try to visit her,” she said. “She has got a lot of attention.”

Straight from the Horse's Heart 
Good news! Lily may not NEED a buddy but since horses are herd animals I bet she will feel much better having her new friend, Anita and it sounds like Anita will be happier with her new friend Lily. Thank goodness for people who have a big heart for animals.

So happy to hear of this. And, that Lily has a new friend, Anita. I have been praying for this beautiful animal. I have two horses that are blind in one eye and I can’t imagine what has happened to this horse. I hope maximum punishment is leveled on the perpetrator of the paint ball attack. My prayers go to Lily, and Anita, for recovery of their health. Thank God to Dr. Nikki Scherrer for her treatment at New Bolton Center where they treated the race horse that died a few years ago. I cried for that horse. His jockey visited him many times and everyone was wishing he would recover. But, unfortunately it was not to be. Prayers to the rescue that has Lily. If I ever get in the area, I would love to come and visit Lily. God Bless all who have saved this beautiful animal, and all the other animals you work so hard to save.

This guy needs to be prosecuted to the fulliest extent of the law. The owners should also share in the responsibility of the cruelty. I am sick and tired of these auction houses and kill pens getting away with the inhumane treatment of horses and other equines as are thousands of other Horse warriors. The revolution has just begun. The Dept of Ag in many states are responsible for allowing this to go on too. I just sent.a post the other day to Sid Miller who heads the Dept of Ag in Texas regarding their shameful.and inhumane treatment at these auctions and kill pens in Texas. Its no longer the “Lone Star” state but the shameful snd corrupt state where anything goes!! Inhumane treatment, death and corruption!! Just disgusting!! I hope that they are God fearing becsuse there is only so much room Heaven and the Horses are alresdy there!!

Gail, I agree with everything you said. May hell and pain strike everyone involved in this from bottom to top of the BLM, the Dept of Ag., auction houses, and killer buyers. May they never have peace again, only pain and suffering which would never equal the pain of the horses, donkey, and mules they’ve killed.

I will never wrap my head around animal cruelty. Those with no voice only look to humans for guidance and care. I am sure there is a place for those who feel some sort of empowerment by mistreating an innocent animal. In the meantime, all we can do as a concerned society, is do our best to take care of and rebuild those that have been torn down. Lily girl, continue to get better and know we are all rooting for you to have a happy, healthy rest of your life.

Good news – I’m glad things have improved so much for her. What a difference, and I’m sure she’s happy. I hope ten grand is enough to drag those scumbags in to justice for what they did to her. I swear, I’ve heard of such human lowlives as those allowed around animals. Absolute scum. Thank goodness there are good people too, as in this case. Thanks to all who were able to help her.

They should lock this a__h__ up for the rest of his life, no food, no water and throw away the key – and still he will not suffer enough. I hope pain and suffering stays with him until he reaches hell.

I am so glad that Lily is doing well , prayers continue for her . I am from Rhode Island and was one of many who posted for any information leading to the ownership of this horse. May the man never own another animal at all

everyone should study miracle healing for the animals for future problems instead of surgery etc . it is a ability wisdom we have lost & should try to find . it would be better . & as well – maybe these problems can heal fully as well .
