Letter: OSU is Complicit in Wild Horse Scandal

Letter written by Janelle Ghiorso as published on Corvallis Gazette-Times

I have been trying to plead for a stop to these atrocious experiments for months and without any replies from OSU or the BLM.

I am an Oregon State University alumni from 1996. I am ashamed and shocked that OSU would partner with the Bureau of Land Management to perform unprecedented and barbaric sterilization experiments on the wild horses that belong to all Americans!

The BLM and ranching interests want these horses eliminated and continue to make absurd overpopulation claims in order to get backing for cutting the population. Any educated person knows what happens when the mares are sterilized! The wild horses will decline and eventually be eliminated. Aside from the pain and suffering the horses will be subjected to in the immediate future, the BLM and ranchers and the big bucks OSU makes from jumping on this corrupt and selfish agenda is worse than shameful!

I will never feel the same about the university. I am among a majority of Americans who prefer the continued freedom of these symbols of freedom in America, not their zeroing out via sterilization! I guess the only thing that matters to OSU is money!

How many residents are aware of the partnership between OSU and the BLM in a horrible attempt to destroy our iconic wild horses in Hines, Oregon? I have been trying to plead for a stop to these atrocious experiments for months and without any replies from OSU or the BLM. There are countless cattle on the range and there lies the real problem. The horses are being scapegoated.

  1. We must be prepared to take a stand agaist this barbaric and ruthless, painful act against our wild mares. This is completely wrong and not necessary. Cattle have taken over. Well we are going to stand up wild and strong for our wild horses. We deserve freedom and being cared for protection and managed properly.
I am appalled at OSU. Shame on the ones who made decisions to work with the evil BLM. I will not stand fir this. Our wild horse advocates and warriors feel the same. STOP THIS GENOCIDE WITH OUR WILD HORSES NOW.

  2. I .. along with my family, friends & their friends…everyone we know is against these experiments. Why isn’t the Secretary of Interior doing her job to protect our wildlife?

  3. I can’t believe that these innocent wild mares and fillies are actually going to be put through these torturous and unnecessary surgeries… what has become of our understanding of right and wrong in America?

Medical Malpractice Related to Unnecessary Surgery
By Law Offices of Barry G. Doyle, P.C.
“Unnecessary surgery is a type of medical malpractice. A form of medical malpractice that has become an alarming and growing problem in the U.S. is unnecessary surgery.
This type of malpractice can lead to life-threatening complications and completely alter an individual’s life. When a surgeon performs and unnecessary surgery, it is an act of medical negligence. Doctors should take every precaution before deciding to prescribe any type of invasive surgery to a patient. When there is a failure to do this and it results in unnecessary surgery, they may be held legally liable. Unnecessary surgery can lead to serious or even life-threatening complications. Some of the risks include hemorrhaging, damage to organs, infection, amputation and anesthesia errors. Putting animals through unnecessary surgery where they face complications that could significantly alter their life is a form of medical negligence.”

  4. Genocide..the word that became popular when. Hitler’s regeim took power during WWII. They killed countless Jewish people, experimented on women in the concentration camps…skinned humans and made couches and lamp shades from their skin..

  5. Call, email and write the University. Also call all the Legislators and the President because not only is the BLM using our tax dollars, but the University receives federal funds to run the university. It is not a private collage. And if this was private they couldn’t take federal horses for those type of experiments anyway. As soon as I finish here I will make.some calls. And please where.u stand in politics, please make sure the Hillary.Clinton Staff member receives a copy of your letter too. This Frankenstein experiments need to be stopped before it gets started !!

Aso of interest, OSU has been attacked by animal rights activists in the past per Wikipedia, which also printed some of their more prominent alumni (though Wikipedia is not always a reliable source):

    Alumni
Main article: List of University of Oregon alumni
There are more than 195,000 University of Oregon alumni around the world. The Ford Alumni Center, situated adjacent to Matthew Knight Arena, is a gathering place for alumni and houses an interactive exhibit.[150] The UO Alumni Association is also based out of this facility.[151]

Prominent alumni include: former-NBC journalist and host Ann Curry, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest author Ken Kesey, Nike founder Phil Knight, Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota, Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk, cognitive scientist Douglas Hofstadter, and U.S. Senator Ron Wyden.

    Faculty and staff

    • Thank you for your information and I have contacted all and given my input regarding the horrific experiments on wild mares with the intent to perform the same surgeries on wild mares on our public lands.
A small correction should be made to Dr. Helen Diggs’ phone number to be 541 – 737-6213 to get to her voice mail.

Various townships on the East Coast are having White Buffalo, Inc., perform ovariectomies on pregnant white tailed deer. As a result, some deer died trying to give birth to stillborn fawns due to infections gotten from surgeries done in police garages and sheds with no medical follow up. The BLM and USDA’s APHIS Wildlife Services (for its sharpshooting) and township commissioners, including mine, have gone mad.

      • As far-fetched as these experiments on wild mares – what moron came up with the idea to do it to deer! Where on the EAst Coast? Have heard of White Buffalo inc
nothing very good but haven’t seen anything about this – like Wildlife Services! And yeah, youre right they have all gone nuts! I live in NYS & see petitions for various small communities who are “over-run” by deer. What do we expect when they are getting pushed out of their environments – just like the wild horses & burros. Glad I live in the country – where the deer just have to watch out for hunters – and cars!

      • I used to live in the country until it got 96% build up with a little more to go. There are many more cars now with speed limits at highway speeds, and if a driver is not pushing the limit, they get high beamed or passed up going over double yellow lines. Where are the cops when you need them?

  7. It is clear. OSU does not have a moral backbone-only a hungry wallet. I wrote as well-to no avail. They do not care about America’s wild horse population or their protected legal status or even about doing what is right. They only care about a slice of the BLM’s financial pie, funded by the American taxpayer who doesn’t agree with their actions, but who has no say. It is a broken system and it will result, in time, in the demise of the entire population of these beautiful creatures.

For what? So more cattle can graze on our public lands providing even more beef? For even more Americans to become obese and have cardiovascular disease? Do we really need more beef???? Of course not.

They are not listening. They do not care.

Adopt a wild horse or two while you can. Give them a chance at life-some kind if a life. It is not what they deserve-to be ripped from their home, but 50,000 already have been. Save them. OSU and the BLM are on course to exterminate them, one beautiful herd at a time.

Adopting is like saving a precious seed, a vision of freedom and wildness that one day will only be remembered in photographs.

  8. Tonight there is only one comment following the Corvallis article, so it is easy for average Oregonians (who own their share of our wild horses, burros, and their management costs) to think this is no big deal.

  9. Such shameful behavior by OSU and the BLM. I believe that any veterinarian or veterinary student who participates is guilty of a crime…… animal cruelty. This is just abhorrent behavior. These horses are America’s wilderness legacy and must remain free from inhumane treatment and medical experiments. On July 4th I saw a video of a Marine group that rides former Wild American Mustangs in parades. These men spoke eloquently of their horses and how much they mean to America. Perhaps Oregon college and the BLM should watch it.

  10. Money, money! It counts where morality and just plain doing what is right doesn’t! They are willing to take money regardless of what is moral and right! The fact that these experiments have been done BEFORE doesn’t count! Money, money, give us the money, we don’t care if it is moral or right, we just want money!
