Death to 44,000 Wild Horses?
Well they did it; the horse hating, special interest bastards that allegedly ‘Advise’ the BLM have voted that all horses in long term holding, they claim 44,000, be killed…TOLD YOU SO, this morning. Bolstadt and company will not be happy until they murder each and every horse and burro. With the exception of Ginger Kathrens it is what they all want and I hope that they gag on their big fat piece of welfare beef at dinner, tonight.
This board should be dissolved and disbanded IMMEDIATELY, not a moment to waste.
Write whbadvisoryboard@blm.gov and express your views. Although Ginger has been thoughtful and civil, as is her nature, it has proven to be a blunt sword against these boneheads.
More details to follow.

Although it is not up to the advisory board to pass this law, they are making the recommendation to BLM and therefore to Congress and Bolstad said just yesterday that he has been meeting with members of congress almost every week (do we wonder what he has been telling them?) – but the board was absolutely serious and they voted and passed the resolution and will be officially providing their recommendation to BLM which will please the hell out of all welfare ranchers and everyone else who is sucking at the teet of public lands. And all of this is based on lies because there are NO excess wild horses and burros on their legally designated lands. Can these people be so stupid and evil? YEP!

Using the acreage that was congressionally designated to WH&B at the time of the 1971 act of approximately 53.3 million acres (42M BLM managed) and using BLM’s own maximum 240 acres per horse per year (half of this usage per burro) statement the WH&B legally designated land could today accommodate 222,083 wild horses and burros (WH&B) although anyone with any basic wildlife science training would know, with other wildlife and with natural predators on those lands the WH&B population would self-stabilize on their legal Herd Area acreage and never come close to that total. “Report to Congress Regarding the WH&B Program, BLM, US DOI: Refuting FY 2011 Budget Justification”, C. And killing these healthy wild horses is NOT euthanasia – here is the definition: “the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy.” This is murder.

I love Nevada but how convenient that this meeting with this announcement of mass euthanasia was staged in the middle of Nevada (Elko) which is known to be extremely anti-wild horse and burro and FULL of welfare ranchers. Boy oh boy I bet the welfare ranchers will be buying “drinks for the house” as they celebrate tonight!
Please excuse my sarcasm but it is realism and this vote today is a gigantic step for BLM to kill all of our wild horses and burros with the exception of a few in zoo-like locations. If seeing wild horses and burros in the wild on their natural and legal lands is on your bucket list … please do it quickly.

Rogue agencies use the Wilderness designation to destroy remnants of our pioneering heritage and access which is the routes of our roots. It violates pre existing uses ie wild horses and burros and often ignores cultural resources. Its an agenda based law to erase history. Previous laws also prevent new roads and development to preserve wilderness areas.

There are hundreds of thousands of vacant grazing lands throughout the west and National Parks. that by existing laws, can be used to manage the nation’s historic cultural wildlife horses and burros. The 80 million that is spent on funding an entire extraction economy is a major fraud on Americans. 80 M could best be used to improve habitat for all wildlife, drill wells, build reservoirs, plant native grasses. Etc.

Absolutely appalled to hear of this latest information release by BoLM… USA likes to present itself as a civilised and modern country – but such unethical and immoral behaviour over so very many years towards the wild mustangs – culminating in this intention to send thousands of healthy creatures to slaughter (despite supposedly spending millions of taxpayers dollars sustaining them for years…) – how can this possibly be justified to the American people? How do they fool you with their false false numbers they publicise and get away with the vast amounts of money they must be making from disposing of these horses so ruthlessly? I am appalled – and I live in UK – come on America – call your politicians to account!

Here’s the HSUS press release:
(09-09-2016)
BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT ADVISORY BOARD RECOMMENDS EUTHANASIA FOR 45,000 WILD HORSES
Flouting humane management options, board condemns wild horses and burros to death
(Sept. 9, 2016) – The Bureau of Land Management’s National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board voted to recommend euthanasia of all unadopted wild horses and burros now in government holding facilities throughout the United States. In response, Humane Society of the United States Senior Vice President of Programs & Innovations Holly Hazard, said:
“The decision of the BLM advisory board to recommend the destruction of the 45,000 wild horses currently in holding facilities is a complete abdication of responsibility for their care. The agency would not be in this situation but for their long-term mis-management. Alternatives to this proposal have been ignored for over 20 years. The HSUS stands ready to implement these alternatives at any time.”
Over the past 20 years, the BLM has maintained round-up and removal as a primary management strategy for wild horse and burro populations on America’s western rangelands – an effort which has led to a financially unsustainable Wild Horse and Burro Program. By focusing massive efforts on removing horses and burros from the range, without treating those horses remaining on the range with any form of fertility control to limit population growth, holding facilities throughout the United States have become overburdened.
In fiscal year 2015, BLM spent $49 million maintaining these horses in off-range facilities, which constituted 46 percent of the entire budget of the agency’s wild horse and burro program. Such a large expenditure has limited the agency’s ability to properly manage wild horses on the range. The HSUS has long recommended the humane and sustainable option of implementing fertility control programs throughout the West.

JACKSON MT. WILD HORSES
A Case Study In The Mismanagement of the BLM’s Wild Horse & Burro Program.(excerpts)
Written and Compiled by C.R. MacDonald
February 2009
http://americanherds.blogspot.com/
Though BLM admitted to most of the Jackson Mountains wild horses having snotty noses and respiratory illness when they arrived at Palomino Valley, what BLM definitely was not admitting too is, respiratory complications are one of the known detrimental effects of driving wild horses by helicopter.
Wild horses have a history of often developing respiratory complications due to being driven for miles when they have not been conditioned for such endurance runs and by being forced to inhale large amounts of dust throughout the ordeal.
In the Animal Welfare Institute’s publication, “Managing For Extinction” regarding the
management practices and abuses occurring in BLMs Wild Horse and Burro
Program, they reported, “In the fall of 2006, the Palomino Valley, NV and Litchfield, CA holding facilities suffered from outbreaks of strangles, a highly infectious and serious respiratory disease.
During the past two years, practically every BLM facility has experienced similar disease outbreaks, leading to the confirmed deaths of scores of animals…..”
As for what happened to those involved in the Jackson Mountains tragedy?
Dr. Boyd Spratling was recently re-appointed to the National Wild Horse & Burro Advisory Board
as BLM’s Advisor on Veterinarian Medicine to serve another three-year term. (25)
Nevada State Director Ron Wenker was promoted and is currently serving as BLM’s Acting National Director.
Nevada Wild Horse & Burro Lead Susie Stokke and National Wild Horse & Burro Lead Dean Bolstad continue to serve in their respective positions.
Cattoor Livestock Roundups, Inc., the gather contractor and crew that drove the Jackson Mountains wild horses, continues to receive multi-million dollar contracts to remove wild horses and burros from public lands, as they have done for BLM and other government agencies for over thirty years.
Though what happened to the Jackson Mountains wild horses and the months leading up to their deaths was one of the worst cases of wild horse “mismanagement” ever documented, not a single animal welfare group or humane advocacy organization expressed interest in legally challenging BLM’s actions or demanded accountability for what was done.
In fact, while the controversy regarding U.S. Fish & Wildlife’s proposal for the Sheldon wild horses was reaching a crescendo in June and BLM was discovering 700 extra wild horses in the Jackson Mountains, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) was receiving over a $1.7 million dollar grant to implement fertility control studies and as the Jackson Mountains wild horses were dying in September, HSUS was focused on submitting their partnership proposals to
BLM to find suitable Herd Management Areas to initiate the studies.
As for BLM’s Winnemucca WH&B Specialist, Heidi Hopkins, it is unclear if BLM merely hung her out to dry for what was ultimately the Wild Horse and Burro
Program’s more experienced supervisors responsibility or if BLM merely cut a deal to buy loyalty and continue the cover ups.
According to Quarter Horse News, Heidi Hopkins left BLM after the Jackson Mountains round up to
“take a position with Humane Society of the United States in its quest to find reliable
immunocontraceptives for wild horses

This is a very sad decision. I would imagine that there are places where the horses and burros could be allowed to live free. How about all the parkland east of the Mississippi? I realize that there is only so much land and too many horses but it seems that there was little effort to find these animals homes for training or placement in the wild. Ranchers receive welfare from the government why should they be allowed to have free meat from these beautiful creatures? Take down the fences and there will be enough room for everyone. Cattle and horses do get along.

Since this post, I have seen several posts by advocates saying the BLM is going to slaughter wild horses in holding. PLEASE take the word slaughter out of this discussion. We have worked long and hard to educate the public as to why horse slaughter is wrong, and euthanasia is the proper option when a horse cannot be kept well and safe. I am against euthanizing healthy wild horses. But PLEASE don’t call it slaughter just for the shock value.
RT used the word butcher for the alliteration and the shock value. The vote was to euthanize older unadoptable horses.

Define older. Unadoptable by whose standards?
But it is a slaughter. These animals are killed for no reason. Turn them loose. If they are unfit, nature will take it’s course. They should not be penned to begin with.
You are not speaking about “euthanizing” A horse or two. There are over 40,000 horses. There is no explanation you can provide to justify this action. And making a comment due to verbiage is truly petty.

Slaughter is on the table according to a Veterinarian Named Cole in USA Today. In fact they are Demanding it be an option in many press releases. So its actually correct. The fact is taking time to split hairs over whose words say what is really unreasonable. At this point we just have to stop this. Yes people inside the Entire Horse Industry are hearing slaughter. They may not say it in their “meetings” but they state it clearly to everyone. The BLM is wanting slaughter. I quit trying . To sugar coat everything. You want results? Your wanting free safe horses? Then let everyone say what needs said without judgement so we win the horses lives.

Well said. The folks at BLM and at the advisory board (Ginger excluded) confuse slaughter with humane euthasia. The’d been saying that barbarity for 20 years: the NCBA, the AQHA, the AAEP, the Farm Bureaus and the Protect the Havest… all of them. The only point is to keep raking in profit through sale for slaughter; all other considerations are irrelevant. And taking into account it would take more than 20 million to truly euthanize them (nearly what it costs to feed them for a year, I doubt they will go for that when the have the chance to gut the WFHBA forever and rake in mucho moolah along the way.

I pretty much agree with everyone. It makes me physically ill to even think of these horses and burros. I am ready to go out West and be arrested if that’s what it takes. But we need to come up with a plan for the horses in holding. How many of them can be released back into the wild? For the ones that can, there are a lot of fences that need to come down. I agree that the advisory board needs to be disbanded, they need to slink off to a dark hole in shame. How dare they even pretend to have these horse’s interests at heart? Next, all the activities of the BLM need investigating. There needs to be an immediate stop to all roundups. They should have been stopped a long time ago-think of how much money they have wasted on just helicopters alone?Birth control using PZP needs to be implemented NOW! Don’t even think about sterilizing the mares. This is just the beginning. Let’s find these horses a good home or set them free.

I have since read Craig Downer’s response to Ben Masters and also his reserve plans- I agree with most but have some disagreements too. I have read about the studies done on wild horses on Assateague Island since the ’80’s and a study of 3 separate groups in the West. So far, the only drawbacks to PZP are related to more breeding behavior by the stallions and less cohesive nature of the herd. The mares treated are in better condition, which may be a factor. Since this is the only birth control option we have at this time, I think we owe these horses a try. Maybe it can be phased out in the future when all the horses are placed and stress is reduced.I also have a problem with all the “I”s in the proposal. Is this going to be a one man show? Also, who makes 5k a month? As far as the environment is concerned, we need to get Joeff Lawson from Australia. He is a genius at looking at degraded land and restoring it.

Charlene, thanks for all of the emails and letters you’ve been sending. Wish we could clone you. A big concern before considering fertility control is that the BLM exaggerates the population estimates of wild horses and burros on the range and that most

Pull the cattle and sheep off of the land that the horses are supposed to be on. Then start putting them back where they belong. Leave the nature to weed out the weak. We have no business stock piling wild horses. Why are they not offered to be adopted? There can be programs created to place the animals. They are wonderful to work with. I had a Mustang. She was loving and loyal. They make it so hard for people to adopt them. Or more would be in great homes. I don’t have a fancy barn , but my horses get fed every day and have shelter from the rain and blankets when it is cold.
