“Just when you thought it could not get any worse…”
“It is often times disheartening to realize that people (humans) are probably the most pathetic and at the same time dangerous life-form that walks (or slithers) on the face of this planet.
We have been involved and engaged with equine advocacy for well into two decades (one day we would like to retire) and witnessed that history continues to repeat itself over and over again with no lessons being learn. The formula for disaster (which always leads to horses and donkeys paying the price) is this:
People create a serious problem for the horses; then people attempt to correct the problem that other people created who are then blocked or further impeded by people who think that they are correcting a wrong only to whip up a bigger problem for the horses and donkeys that people had created in the first place ultimately resulting in the equines paying the price for the stupidity of…(drum-roll)…PEOPLE! I HATE IT!
I have further opinions on this topic but I do not want to overshadow the disgusting course of events, detailed below, that were caused by PEOPLE!
Below is an official statement of the Dewey County Sheriff’s office as published on their Facebook page; directly following that statement is a comment made on Facebook regarding this course of events, it pretty much sums up what I was alluding to above.
PEOPLE if you want to make a difference you can do a variety of things other than put the horses at risk and showing your asses, recommendations would be as follows: (contact numbers are listed in previous posts)
- Donate to the county for hay for the horses
- Support Elaine Nash and Fleet of Angels to help transport the horses
- Get up off your dead ass and volunteer for on the ground work
- Call up the ASPCA, HSUS and with respect and controlled passion seek their assistance in this case
- But above all, don’t threaten, harass, demean or insult those who are in control of the horses. Even the twerpyest, little sniveling geek can sit behind a computer screen in the wee hours of the morning and act like some big bad ass, twisted gangster but it takes a real, self-actualized individual to bite their lip, raise their hand and selflessly offer to assist in a situation where confrontation would be an easy out.
Get after it, do the right thing, grow some kahunas and most importantly…do it with dignity and grace. The horses and donkeys need us.” ~ R.T.

RT you are right – just when I thought it could not be WORSE…….every day I am just crying for lack of anything better than I can do. This is not the fault of the Dewey County Sheriff’s office. Threats of any kind are just WRONG.

The core “Advocacy” does not demean or threaten, that activity is conducted by ‘fringe’ elements…who have already shown their colors and have responded to this post with false accusations and mean-spiritedness.

…but at an undisclosed location,,,,,why doesn’t the sheriff just sell them directly to a kb??? I’m sure kb’s will know where the auction is…..
I’m also tired of the HSUS!!! Ending horse slaughter is a VERY LOW priority for them!!!

No there really were threats and it is very sad given that the people at Phillips were being very helpful and willing to work with people who wanted to take the horses – -until the threats. Now the horses may possibly have to be transported much further away causing more stress on foals and pregnant mares and horses who are not in good shape.

Sadly – we have all seen those kind of comments – usually not on this blog – thanks to RT & his “moderate” button. But pretty much everywhere else. Pretty awful that those people have influenced this issue – after the many rescues & volunteers that have been AND STILL ARE working so hard in freezing blizzards to get as many horses out as they can. Like lots of us – I’ll send another check to the rescue that I hear from and who has been in SD for weeks! How about everyone of us thats able send what you can for the horse’s hay or if you are aware of volunteers & rescues that have been doing the on the ground work – they sure can use the help.

I donate (in a small way) to Chilly Pepper-Miracle Mustang. Its a small rescue and I believe used to mainly take in & care for orphan foals – but have worked hard to get as many horses out of the situation in SD as they can – have been up there for weeks now helping to sort & load horses. They can use all the help they can get. I’m sure there have been other rescues there, too.

I would say the people that made the threats are wildlife terroists. They are at the very edge of extreme behavior. They don’t see how their actions have created a worse situation for the animals they claim they are protecting, their extreme actions only help to build and validate the public perception that people against horse slaughter and keeping wild horses wild fall into the category of nut jobs. Now common sense, level-headed worker bees for advocacy have to work even harder than ever to overcome this perception. This reflects the signs of our times. No one is rewarded for compromise and working together to solve problems by the media that is sought after, it is only newsworthy if there is conflict, aggression, threats and death.

If you want to get the real information please see Elaine Nash page. Fleet of Angels has been there in the ground. The weather is not cooperating. There are people there sorting these animals out for pickup to good homes. There are breakdowns with trucks. FOA has been offering discounted hauling. People are scrambling around to get this thing and keep it together. Dewey county is wanting their money back for hay. Only 270 of the total horses can be adopted out. The rest are slated to go to auction. The kbs are salivating over an auction. They haven’t gotten an extension. The price to buy their way out is outrageous. Don’t blame the HSUS. They were trying to work with Karen offering pzp and administrators to keep the herd population under control. Money had been paid but not all and the counties want their money. This is all one giant Cluster…. Elaine and her group are busting their asses to get these horses that can go out of there. Then the threats have further jeopardized the horses. Now Dewey county is moving the location of the auction to another location and only giving 3 days notice so that put another damper on saving these animals. I personally applaud everyone who has donated to help, to get there in this horrible weather to work on the ground to get horses sorted, loaded, cared for and to those haulers and adopters who have managed to get out with their loads in spite of conditions. FOA has limited money but is offering help to adopters for extra costs but mind you there’s a limit to what they can afford. I think that everybody who has done anything to help is to be commended. I have a special place in my n heart for them and especially Elaine and her crew. To Palomino Armstrong and the other man out there helping…my thanks. I’m not going to condemn anybody at this point but I do want everybody to know that there are those who are giving everything they’ve got to do damage control. Again I’ve been following avid sharing the information from Elaines page because that is the most reliable source information. Do whatever you can to help her help them. Worry about the backlash later. The horses are the first piority..the only priority in my opinion. Go to the auction and outbid the kill buyers .. There are a lot of wishes that I have for these horses but I’ve no time for name calling or finger pointing right now. Sort that shit out later. I know I’m usually the one who goes off half cocked but I’ve been following this from the start. I am very proud of the rescues in Texas who have taken horses in in large lots as well as the others in. various parts of the country. There are people helping in big and small ways. All of the effort is worth more than gold. Thank you.

Exactly, Terry! Sort it out later. There is absolutely NO time for this kind of stupid backbiting & threats – The horses and the people on the ground out there need all of our support. Threatening the local auction when they were trying to help get the horses to a good place? Just WRONG.

This is emblematic of so much that is so wrong in our country, it is heartbreaking. Surely we are better than this? For those religiously inclined, at this special time of year, “what would Jesus do?” comes to mind.
Also must repeat my alarm and revulsion that there remains no statement from ISPMB or their BOD, which only further raises doubts they can or should survive. It is hard to imagine no charges have yet been filed, either, since any of us guilty of the same actions would not be so blessed.
My suggestion is to send $ to the sheriffs to provide amped up security (and hay, and coffee and doughnuts!) for the horses and the buyers. A large peaceful public turnout would also help once the location is made public. How much better if the entire ISPMB herd/s could be placed at once without need of an auction. Is it even possible to relocate them onto Indian lands and pay a sovereign nation to keep them there?
Could we get a voluntary checkoff box on our federal tax returns which would divert some of our taxes to support wild horses in the wild? Can we at least hold out the foals and get them safely away from the auction altogether? They will not be worth anything to begin with, and will weigh even less on arrival wherever the auction is to be held. Mercy, please! Are there pastors in the area who would speak up? Pope. Francis surely would if he was aware – is there a way to get this problem in front of him? Anyone?

Questions
How much has Dewey County had to spend on hay? There were multiple donation sites set up to help buy hay.
Hay purchased must have helped increase income for at least some of the Dewey County ranchers. That, in turn, brings money into the county.
A balance sheet made available would be helpful for those who have donated and for those who, like me, are confused.

Feed four herds per month: $50,000
Feed four herds for six months: $300,000
Looks like the sheriffs aren’t far off on their estimated costs, but by ISPMB’s own numbers their intact herds would require $900,000 for 18 months of hay (no other costs added in).

Louie, I doubt we will see any accurate accounting from ISPMB for a long time, if ever, unless they are audited. Donations for horses, hay, shipping, and regular ongoing donations are going to be a big tangle with no staff and a barely to non-functioning BOD right now.
The Dewey County sheriff has posted some information, but as this is an ongoing situation there is no way to keep anything up to date easily. Add in whatever happens at the scheduled auction and it will be even more complex to sort out.

IcySpots, hay donations were set up in several different accounts. One was set up by the Dewey County Auditor. There were quite a few more set up by different organizations as well. So what needs to made public is a balance sheet showing the invoices/receipts..debits and credits. It’s just good fiscal policy, especially in an emotionally charged situation such as this.
I think the $ still owed is for projected future expenses.

Re: Sciencedaily.com article. Yes the horses are blamed as usual, but there is a line or two about livestock: “71 percent of all animals detected over the sampling period were horses. Cattle accounted for 19 percent and the rest were pronghorn antelope, deer and hawks.” It’s usually the other way around. Horses typically don’t degrade the edges this much as cattle do.

Not disclosing location really should not be that big of deal. If you are planning on going to the sale make your hotel reservations at a town within 2 hours of Lantry and you should be only a couple hours from wherever they decide to hold the auction. Be sure and be prepared for cold weather if you are from out of the area. The auction yard will probably have some type of cafe, but it will be limited. I would suggest that you take a sense of humor, patience, a steel thermos, cushion to sit on and warm clothes. Be prepared to wave your number to catch the ringman’s notice. But do NOT. wave your arms to catch someone else’s attention or you will own a horse or horses that you didn’t expect. Ask for help if you are having trouble understanding the auctioneer. There will be people who can translate it for you.

Wonder just who made threats that incited the Sheriff to move the site of the auction? Just about anyone can masquerade. United Horsemen page shows people out for blood and want her indicted. Again anyone can make those threats and knowing the result will be harder on the horses and advocates and easier for KBs.

Rachel, I share your anger here but don’t agree it should be aimed at the sheriffs at all, they have stepped up way above and beyond what they could have done and deserve our gratitude for this. They didn’t create this situation and have tried to make the best of an unprecedented situation, at least in scale. If anything we should be trying to provide them more support, not less.

Must be very dangerous “threats” for authorities to be scared enough to hide the entire sale. Perhaps the FBI should be provided the source of all the threat messages & let those people be caught. They should not be allowed to disrupt the authorities or get away with threats. Those are crimes.

I am heartbroken & sickened after hearing this news. I am also angry & disgusted that someone cared more about their ego than the safety & the future for all those beautiful horses! How arrogant of whoever did this to think they could make any progress with intimidation & threats. Considering most bullies are cowards, I’m sure they remained anonymous while running their mouth & pretending to be a bad ass. I will keep all the horses & all the wonderful heroes working so hard to save them, in my prayers. I know there are so many people that truly care about the welfare of these horses. If we all pray for a Christmas miracle, we might just get one! It can’t hurt to try.

What this announcement does is prohibit the efforts of people to photograph individual horses prior to the auction to post for potential bidders. Will the sheriff’s dept. do this, or allow an approved person or entity to do so? Even today there is no place to find a current gallery of horses caught up in this, and the concealing the auction location until the last minute will prevent many from coming who had planned to. If they have to be sold, the best answer I can think of is to do a live online auction onsite at ISPMB and give people enough time to get them shipped. Can the governor step in here?

Many of us are just too far away to be on the ground to help out here. And we all know from the release from the HSUS rep from S.D. that HSUS did try to help over the past several years and help was not wanted. she Wanted to keep breeding, and ASPCA helped, yet offers of suggestions were ignored. Moving the auction will not stop someone if they want to; threaten an auction location. They too will find out where the auction is at any way. Sad for the rescues or folks that wanted to help but they were refused if Karen did not like them. That is the area the officials should have been able to step in. its all about Power, and the horses will pay the price.

DEAR SANTA: My Christmas wish is that they will auction these horses on site using modern technology and allow people to take them as soon as possible, with feed supplemented by donations.
No horses should be subjected to roundup and hauling off en masse to an auction elsewhere, this is a recipe for chaos, confusion, stress and injury to people and animals. There is also the big question about the legality of shipping blind horses, mares in late pregnancy, and foals under the age of six months, all restricted or prohibited by the USDA. We also have to recognize the worst of winter comes in the next three months.
I expect willing volunteers would stay on site to ensure this, there was housing for an employee who is no longer there so some facilities are available. Those of us unable to adopt and unwilling to send funds down so many suspicious rat holes could assist a SINGLE designated legal entity just to get these horses safely out of there and fed in the meanwhile for a few months to avoid the shipping/auction scenario. It is beyond cruel to think donors’ hard earned cash may only fatten up horses others will buy and slaughter by the pound for profit.
KS and any ISMPB agents should be issued restraining orders, removed from the property and any and all involvement with the horses other than those they have already approved adoptions for, until the last horse leaves the place.

IS – this is GOOD info that makes GOOD sense – AND would save much needed money for food – is there a SINGLE entity to donate to? Dewey County accounting office must be closed on Sat and Sun – just get answering machine – will try again tomorrow morning to make a donation for hay………

Rita, thanks. I think the Governor of SD should perhaps step in here. At that level they have access to National Guard and military Reserves, for some examples, who could provide some manpower, even on a rotating basis. Training in extreme conditions is always something sought for. The question is funding – so if a single legitimate site could be designated to keep horses on site and fed while adoptions are processed, I think funds would come in, and even with more time matching grants or challenge grants become possible, especially since this is a failure in a nonprofit rather than a private enterprise (which could declare bankruptcy).
PS can you pls call me something besides IS (the terrorists!!!!)

Funds sent to Elaine Nash/Fleet of Angels would be a good centralized donation point.. There is, I think, a site already in place to help with transport, so perhaps a site could also be set up for hay and feed?

Well, here’s the Dewey County website update this evening. No information on whether photos or videos will be posted prior to the sale, unfortunately:
UPDATE LOCATION OF ISPMB SALE
The ISPMB sale will be held Dec 20th at the Faith Livestock Yard in Faith SD. Faith is located about 35 miles west of the ranch in Lantry on highway 212.
Approximately 550-650 horses of varying ages, some mares with foals. No geldings.
Horses are comprised of the following blood lines from these locations:
Catnip Herd: Horses originate from the Sheldon Wildlife Range (SWR) in northern Nevada.
Gila Herd: Horses originate from the Gila Bend, Arizona area and genetic testing indicates that they contain rare blood lines from the Old Spanish Mustangs in the Southwest.
White Sands Herd: Horses originate from the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in New Mexico.
Virginia Range Herd: Horses originate from Wild Horse Annie’s Ranch.
I have been told that horses will be run through in small groups and separated if desired. I believe bidding will be by assigned number. I am trying to confirm this and get start time etc. I will post this information when I receive it.
This is a very bidder friendly livestock commission co. working with all buyers equally.

County officials have estimated their impounding costs to be $100,000, mostly in hay purchases. The society has paid at least $52,000 toward that cost, and the counties have received grants and donations totaling at least $24,000, leaving roughly another $24,000 in costs to be either recouped at the auction or absorbed by the counties.

Dewey Cty and the other one is charging the horses for hay which they’ll have to pay for with their lives. I’m writing the gov and Steve Aberle to postpone the auction to get more adoptions on board and to give time for horses to be picked up by adopters. This is only fair. The weather is treacherous for everyone including the 4 legged ones.

Here is my ltr to Gov Dugaard:
Dear Governor:
You are aware that over 500 horses of the ISPMB sanctuary will be auctioned on or near Dec. 20, 2016, as per Steve Aberle, States Attorney, to repay Dewey and Ziebach Counties for the hay eaten by them.
Please have the date of the auction postponed, since it has only been a little over 2 months that the counties took over feeding them, and more funds could be raised to offset costs given a little more time.
The weather has been treacherous for all those brave volunteers and the 4 legged ones who are adopted by good-hearted folks. It is very hard for more people to help and to fund raise which they very much want to do to benefit the horses.
Please ask Attorney Aberle to postpone the auction date, so these horses do not have to pay for their sustenance with their lives.
