Millions of donkeys from Asia, Africa and South America are at risk of being stolen and slaughtered for their skins, which are used to make ejiao. Some sources report the demand in China alone to be 10 million skins per year. Large numbers of donkeys are being slaughtered in Mexico (sourced from within Mexico and across the border in the USA).
The global demand for donkey skins is causing mass-scale suffering to donkeys and risking the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on them.

They have used ejiao in Traditional Chinese Medicine for hundreds of years. But now there is a burgeoning middle class with money to spend on luxuries making the demand greater than the supply. China is now depleting entire countries of their donkeys to meet demand. The Chinese government is heavily promoting the use of products made from ejiao which further adds to the unsustainable demand. Presently, the world population of donkeys minus the demand and adding in birth rates indicates that donkeys will be extinct in a decade. This truly is a worldwide crisis.

Utterly disgusting. It’s something of a trend I have noticed with humans over the years, a narcissistic preoccupation with self – our looks, our health, and youth. Much more than is healthy. I wish we’d stop exploiting the planet’s other creatures to do it!

Current Status of Animal Welfare and Animal Rights in China

In the past few years, new social passions have sparked on the Chinese mainland. At the centre of these burgeoning passions is a focus on animal welfare, animal treatment, and even animal rights, by the public and academic sectors. With China’s rapid economic changes and greater access to information from around the world, societal awareness of animal issues is rising very fast.
Hastening this paradigm shift were several highly public incidents involving animal cruelty, including exposés on bear bile harvesting for traditional Chinese medicine, the thousands of dogs rescued from China’s meat trade, and the call to boycott shark fin soup and bird nest soup. This article outlines the current status of campaigning by animal advocates in China (specifically the animal rights movement) from three interlinked perspectives: wildlife conservation, companion animal protection, and laboratory animal protection.
By reviewing this campaigning, we attempt to present not only the political and social impact of the concept of animal rights, but also the perceptions of, and challenges to, animal rights activities in China.
