Preliminary results for wild horse deaths at BLM corrals
SUSANVILLE, Calif. – Preliminary veterinarian results indicate that 25 wild horse foals held at the BLM’s Litchfield Corrals may have died from colitis, or inflammation of the colon. Additional tests are ongoing and the BLM is waiting for results from additional blood and tissue samples that could point to the cause of the colitis.
The foals, all under six months old, were awaiting adoption, when on Oct. 2 BLM wranglers noticed signs of a flu-like illness in some animals, all of which were housed in a single pen. The wranglers consulted with a veterinarian and treated symptoms, but the condition of the foals gradually worsened over the week of Oct. 2.
The foals affected by the illness were kept in an isolated pen. There have been no signs of illness in the other 300 mustangs in the main pastures of the corrals.
The foals were born at the corrals to mares that had been gathered last September from the Devil’s Garden Wild Horse Territory on the Modoc National Forest.

Is anyone testing the feed and water? May seem pretty basic, but is the first place to investigate. I’ve seen some sketchy hay being shipped to BLM facilities by contractors.

Or, maybe they fed the foals alfalfa.

Added to weaning them possibly too soon & the stress involved in that! Certainly appears there should be more oversight here!

Could be — also alfalfa often has blister beetles which can cause intestinal burning and colic, and death, in horses.

THE TRUTH #10 – BLM Long Term Holding Contractor for Hickory (Jason Jacobs of Jacobs Ranch) weaned 209 foals after being instructed by the BLM NOT to wean the foals, and 28 foals died within a month.
Abrehum Hester specifically instructed the BLM’s Hickory Long Term Holding contractor, Jason Jacobs, NOT to wean the foals. Soon after, Hester received a telephone call from Jacobs reporting that he weaned 227 foals. (Note that Jacobs stated that his worker originally estimated there were 227 foals, and 28-30 were buried within a month, and these numbers were later changed.)
Even though Jacobs disobeyed instructions and 28 (that we know of) foals died, and BLM’s Lili Thomas, Bea Wade and Dean Bolstad were aware of the situation, this contractor was still allowed to oversee the wild horses and still had his contract renewed.

BLM stupidity for wrangling foals away from their mothers way before weaning time. Combining different bands of horses in confined quarters. Foals suffering great stress from these STUPID actions would be more susceptible to disease. Also changing their diet, environment, climate, etc all contributes to weakening the immune system of these terrified wild horse babies. Tragic and completely avoidable if the BLM wasn’t hell bent on exterminating all wild horses by their excessive, cruel roundups. They should be held accountable. Corrupt government.

In order to truly reform the program there would have to be people in charge that understand AND have respect for all aspects of Wild Horses & Burros IN THE WILD.
They would also have to have the tenacity and mind set of a Pit Bull

If Your not aware of the conditions and weakening effects of diet change, relocation and taking young foals away from their Mother’s then You shouldn’t be in a position to make decisions like this.

The local Farm Bureau and the Devil’s Garden Wild Horses “management” (excerpts):
“The Modoc County Farm Bureau Takes Charge of Developing the Revised Management Plan
The Forest Service subcontracted the development of the revised WHT plan to an entity representing local grazing interests. In August 2012 over one year after the Service issued the scoping letter the Modoc County Farm Bureau (“Farm Bureau”) entered into an agreement with the Service to develop the new management plan for the WHT.
(“The entire plan development, not just the data collection, will now be funded through a new challenge cost share agreement between the Forest and the Modoc County Farm Bureau.”).
Under this agreement, the Farm Bureau agreed to collect all of the data on wild horses, draft a monitoring report, prepare the draft EA and final EA, and oppose any appeal of the agency’s decision. AR04713. In return, the Service paid the Farm Bureau $203,000.
The Farm Bureau was not a disinterested party. Its purpose “is to protect and promote agricultural interests in Modoc County,” including the grazing allotments that overlap with the WHT that are used to feed the cattle that compete with horses.
The Farm Bureau “has many members whose livelihoods depend on grazing operations affected by the ever-expanding wild horse herd within or adjacent to” the WHT.
Almost immediately after signing this agreement, the scope of the WHT plan revision was dramatically revised. On October 31, 2012, Susan Stokke, Field Manager for the Farm Bureau’s project, informed the Forest Service that the Farm Bureau wanted to change the WHT boundaries.

Mr. Curtis also is the Modoc County employee centrally involved in the development of the new WHT management plan, as confirmed by the declaration he submitted in support of the ranching intervenors in this case. In addition and specifically, the funds from Title III being used to pay the salary of Sean Curtis, then County Resource Analyst and head of the Land Use Committee, were being used wrongfully and had been misappropriated. Sean Curtis and the Land Use Committee itself at the time was under heavy fire by local Citizens regarding, what they deemed, as wrongful conduct, including the use of Federal Funds to pay L.U.C. President Curtis which is illegal under Title 19 law as well as misuse of Title III funds. Other issues with L.U.C. included the Title 19 mandates that were ignored, such as the committee elect a chairperson, vice-chair and secretary from within its membership and divide itself into various committees (such as livestock, wildlife, water, timber, farming etc). This was not done, in fact, Mr. Curtis presented the committee with Modoc County Land Use Committee Standard Operating Protocol he had authored. In it, Mr. Curtis chaired the meetings, developed the agenda, wrote the minutes, appointed sub-committees, appointed an executive review committee, appointed advisory members, and most troubling was the exclusive contact and coordinator with agencies that contributed to his salary.
