Not only is horse slaughter grossly inhumane, cruel to horses & a waste of taxpayer dollars, unregulated horse meat is a risk to the safety of our public health. We are deeply encouraged that the Senate has voted to uphold the current ban on slaughter & now we need the House to follow suit.

NEW YORK December 13, 2017

Today, the Alliance to Save America’s Wild Horses and Burros announced the placement of a major advertisement in Politico, as the U.S. House of Representatives considers a repeal of the federal ban on horse slaughter. A bipartisan majority in the U.S. Senate has agreed to continue federal policies that protect both wild and domestic horses and burros from slaughter and other forms of mass killing. The Alliance, led by the New York-based CANA Foundation, have sought to make the case to House Members that horse slaughter and killing is not a viable solution to managing our Nation’s horse population.

Currently, the U.S. federal government spends over $80 million of taxpayer dollars every year to round up wild horses from public rangelands and confine them to inhumane conditions in holding pens. These horses are removed from their lawful habitats to make room on public lands in Western States for cattle grazing, oil fracking, drilling and other big business interests. To solve this problem, some proponents in the federal government are advocating for the reintroduction of horse slaughter and other inhumane forms of mass killing in the United States.

The Alliance to Save America’s Wild Horses and Burros is a national coalition of advocates from various fields working together to raise awareness of a House vote that will imperil the safety of America’s horse population. This unprecedented unification joined together to place the Politico advertisement urging the House to follow the Senate’s lead on protecting horses and burros in the Interior and Agriculture Appropriations bills. This alliance shows the willingness of advocacy groups to offer solutions to this inhumane, public health safety issue.

“Not only is horse slaughter grossly inhumane, cruel to horses and a waste of taxpayer dollars; unregulated horse meat is a risk to the safety of our public health,” said Manda Kalimian, President of the CANA Foundation. “We are deeply encouraged that the Senate has voted to uphold the current ban on slaughter and now we need the U.S. House of Representatives to follow suit.”

Suzanne Roy, Executive Director of The American Wild Horse Campaign stated, “We call on Congress to uphold the wishes of 80 percent of Americans who want wild horses and burros protected not slaughtered. We are pleased to take a stand with our colleagues in the wild horse advocacy and horse welfare community in calling attention to what’s at stake in Congress’ decision on 2018 spending legislation.”

The advertisement will appear in Politico’s print edition and will be published on Wednesday, December 13th, 2017.
