This beautiful Salt Wells Creek family is somewhere……
Axtell? Bruneau? Rock Springs? Mexico?

Our guest tonight is Carol Walker, Dir. of Field Documentation for Wild Horse Freedom Federation. Carol spent 3 weeks in September and October of 2017 observing the roundup and removal of 1968 wild horses from Great Divide Basin, Adobe Town and Salt Wells Creek, three of the largest remaining Herd Management Areas in Wyoming and the country.

The BLM sent the majority of these wild horses to be held on private property at the BLM’s Axtell (Utah) and Bruneau (Idaho) off range corrals, where the public is not allowed to see them. It’s also harder to get older horses adopted, and if they aren’t adopted, they’ll likely be sold and end up going to slaughter. The BLM is planning to offer many wild horses on internet adoptions, but this is a quick way to most of them to get 3 strikes and be sold to slaughter. Carol will tell you about the BLM’s cold-hearted refusal of the help offered to get these wild horses adopted and save them from slaughter.

  1. The wild horses of Sweetwater County are proof that the American spirit still thrives here. These majestic and free horses wander through the beautiful high desert of Sweetwater County seeking food, water, shelter and room to roam. There are many ways to interact with the wild horses that call Sweetwater’s stunning landscape home; we recommend following our guide for viewing Wyoming’s wild horses.

    • Wyoming welcomed 8.5 million overnight visitors.
    • Visitor spending directly affected Wyoming’s economy by generating $171 million in local and state tax revenues.
    • The state’s tourism industry supported 31,770 full and part-time jobs.
    • Each Wyoming household would pay $730 more in taxes without the tax revenue generated by the travel and tourism industry.

  3. You NEED TO GET IN FRONT OF CONGRESS ON TV AND TELL THEM THIS. IT’S HIGH TIME TO SPEAK IN CONGRESS AND ALLOW THEM TO ASK US THE HARD QUESTIONS. SEE WHAT CAN BE DONE TO ARRANGE THIS. CHRIS STEWART GOT TO TALK ABOUT GARBAGE WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO TALK ABOUT THE TRUTH. TALK TO THE SENATORS AND ASK WHO AND WHAT WE CAN DO TO WORK THIS IN.

  4. I can tell you from personal experience that after trying to get a specific wild horse from BLM’s Litchfield holding facility and numerous communications and PROMISES by BLM to hold him for us … when we went to get him he was gone and we discovered that they had shipped him across country to a long term facility where he was reported as DEAD on arrival.

What kind of a torturous days and nights and eventual death did this wonderful wild herd stallion endure at the hands of BLM?

It breaks my heart to think about it.

FYI do NOT believe anything the BLM tells you – ever.

  5. Called all five numbers and got a return call from Bruneau where I believe the white older mare and young white filly Carol photographed at Salt Wells were sent. The older white stallion in Carol’s photo probably went to be gelded somewhere else. The woman said she has over 400 horses and didn’t know about the whereabouts of these specific horses. She also said the public could come in May to view the horses. This is not unlike what Carol experienced and a terrible shame as these horses whose lives have been broken don’t stand a chance with this administration.

  7. How about some perspective on how “expensive” the current wild horse and burro program is, and the resulting insistence on denying public input, public acces, and public accountability?

The government shutdown underway now could cost $300 MILLION PER DAY. By this estimate, we’ve already been charged $600 MILLION FOR THIS WEEKEND.
    https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/01/government-shutdown-cost_n_4022981.html

The Trump administration proposed 2018 budget for the ENTIRE wild horse and burro program is just under $71 million (for 365 days). This amounts to approximately 23% of the DAILY cost of a shutdown, or an ANNUAL cost of just under 6 HOURS of the daily shutdown cost.
    https://www.blm.gov/about/budget

“Managing America’s Lands and Resources for Multiple-Use: The BLM works with our partners and communities we serve to promote multiple-use of public lands and resources for Americans to use and enjoy. The budget proposes $47.2 million for Recreation Resources Management for the BLM to meet the public’s demand for access and diverse recreation opportunities.

The proposed budget calls for $67.8 million for the Rangeland Management program for monitoring and evaluating the health of the public lands, administering grazing use, managing invasive weeds, and other activities. In addition, the budget proposes $75.1 million for the Wildlife Management program, which conserves and restores wildlife habitat as an essential part of BLM’s mission. More than 3,000 species of wildlife live on BLM-managed lands. The budget request also funds the Threatened and Endangered Species Management program at $20.3 million. Priority will be given to recovering federally listed species; conservation and other pre-emptive actions will continue on a smaller scale.

Managing Healthy Wild Horses and Burros on Healthy Rangelands: The BLM manages wild horse and burro herds on 26.9 million acres of public lands. The budget request proposes $70.7 million for the Wild Horse and Burro program to help manage nearly 73,000 wild horses and burros that roam public lands.”
