Urgent Alert! Please Comment Today on BLM’s Plans to Torture Wild Mares

Urgent! Please Comment by Monday, June 4th at 4 pm to Stop BLM’s Gruesome Torture of Wild Mares

By Carol Walker, Director of Field Documentation, WHFF

The BLM has released a Scoping Document on the Warm Springs Herd Management Area in Oregon that proposes spaying wild mares using ovariectomy via colpotomy. Despite massive public outcry and three lawsuits that ultimately stopped the BLM from proceeding with these so-called “experiments” in 2016, they are proposing it again. This is not about controlling a supposedly out of control population of wild horses, this is not about actual data driven scientific research and this is no way, shape or form humane, safe or responsible treatment of the wild horses that the BLM is mandated to manage and protect. This is instead cruel, unsanitary, unethical and lethal torture of wild mares. What kind of monsters propose ripping out the ovaries of wild mares in a BLM holding corral in Burns, Oregon, one of the most dirty and unsanitary places that can be found? Many of these mares and their unborn foals will die, many will suffer horribly, and for what? Spaying of domestic mares is a procedure very rarely done, not using this outdated, obscene method, and is only done in sterile, controlled conditions.

Scoping Letter:

In 2016 Don Moore, a veterinarian in Colorado commented on the plans for sterilizing wild mares in a holding corral ovariectomy via colpotomy:

“This type of trial and error butchery is a violation of the least feasible management clause of the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act. Mass experimental surgeries performed under these conditions outlined in the proposal, amounts to negligence and abuse.   I believe experiments such as this proposal are unethical, inhumane and unwarranted.   Any veterinarian(s) who would perform these experiments is in violation of the oath  taken as a graduating veterinarian,  “above all else, do no harm”.  If a veterinarian in private practice performed these procedures in the manner described in this document they would most certainly be reported  to and disciplined by the regulatory board of that state.  Discipline would likely mean suspension of that veterinarian’s license to practice in that state.”

What can you do to help?

Say that you oppose the spaying of wild mares under any conditions. Say that the BLM must abandon all research plans that use the sterilization of wild horses and that they must use only humane and safe methods to manage wild horses in the wild on our public lands where they belong.

You can email the BLM using this information by 4pm today:

If Oregon’s Senators cannot be contacted by e-mail, then Twitter works well. @SenJeffMerkley @RonWyden The BLM oversight committee should also be contacted by Tweet storm.

    Craig Downer writes:

I am offering the following input in strong opposition to the proposed spaying of wild mares. This should not happen, neither in the field nor in BLM holding facilities, such as the one in Hines, Oregon!
These spayings are the exact opposite of what the unanimously passed Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 (WFHBA) says to do. Section 3 (a) of this WFHBA stipulates that the BLM & US Forest Service must manage wild horses and burros so as “to achieve and maintain a thriving natural ecological balance on the public lands” and “at the minimum feasible level”. This spaying operation would violate both of these legal points of law. – What is “natural” about spaying?! It is gruesome and would result in untold suffering by the mares being so callously victimized. Its consequence would also be a serious disruption of the social integrity of the wild horse bands and herds. It would create a hellish and chaotic situation all to accommodate the selfish ranchers and other traditional enemies who have not yet learned the value of compassion as this applies to our relationship to these animals … presences here on this Earth for whom people in their right mind recognize a natural affinity.

  3. Done once again! Did email both senators (thanks Louie) & as always another to the BLM. Honestly, do they think if they try the same thing over & over again we wont notice??? I would sincerely hope that Congress might actually remember the public outcry the last time – maybe?? Altho maybe thats too much to ask.

Re: Complaint – Medical Malpractice Related to Unnecessary Surgery

Medical Malpractice Related to Unnecessary Surgery
By Law Offices of Barry G. Doyle, P.C.
“Unnecessary surgery is a type of medical malpractice. A form of medical malpractice that has become an alarming and growing problem in the U.S. is unnecessary surgery.
This type of malpractice can lead to life-threatening complications and completely alter an individual’s life. When a surgeon performs and unnecessary surgery, it is an act of medical negligence. Doctors should take every precaution before deciding to prescribe any type of invasive surgery to a patient. When there is a failure to do this and it results in unnecessary surgery, they may be held legally liable. Unnecessary surgery can lead to serious or even life-threatening complications. Some of the risks include hemorrhaging, damage to organs, infection, amputation and anesthesia errors. Putting animals through unnecessary surgery where they face complications that could significantly alter their life is a form of medical negligence.”

  5. At least 20k people reacted to this heinous experiment on wild mares a few years ago, yet these people rear their ugly heads again. We need to mobilize and let them know it’s still a cruel and vile thing to do to wild mares and their unborn foals.

  6. I am heartsick and livid at the barbaric nature of “protection” the B.L.M. continues to LIE about with FALSE STUDIES AND SICK IDEAS. FOR WHAT? THIS HAS GOT TO STOP ! !

These are our GOVERNMENT officials!! B.L.M. WHAT is in the MINDS of our officials to stoop so low?

There is absolutely NOTHING KIND, HUMANE or ETHICAL with ANY of the suggested experiments on a PROTECTED WILD ANIMAL?!!

WHAT PROTECTION??!! NONE! LIES, LIES AND SKEWED STUDIES – UNJUST AND HARMFUL.

WHAT ARE THE NAMES OF THE VETS THAT WOULD DO THIS?! ARE THEY (EVEN) VETS?!
ARE THEY LICENSED? IN WHAT COUNTRY?!

Here, the 2010 AVMA’s REVISED SECTION of the Veterinarian’s OATH:

The new section reads: “Being admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine, I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare, the prevention and relief of animal suffering, the conservation of animal resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge.”

WHO IS BEHIND B.L.M and THIS OUTRAGEOUS INSANITY? .VERY DISTURBING. UN-GODLY.
    This is NOT ACCEPTABLE!!

UN-tested, UN-proven UN-SCIENTIFIC Frankenstein-era surgeries. Or WORSE, resembling one of Hitler’s INSANE Nuremberg experiments ! Mutilation, disability and certain DEATH to our mares and all wild horses.

Americans are NOT a poor third world country that kills anything to eat!
    .
Americans are NOT China – that kills, abuses and obliterates EVERY ANIMAL IT CAN PURCHASE to the DETRIMENT and/or EXTINCTION of NUMBERS of WILD ANIMALS!!

WE ARE the UNITED STATES of AMERICA. And WE the PEOPLE WILL NEVER GIVE UP on OUR wild horses!

DISBAND the B.L.M. (that eats our tax payer dollars with blood and torture). INVESTIGATE THE B.L.M.

THIS HAS GOT TO STOP ! !

  7. Just to add to the BS at this point in time I got a notice from the Cloud Fdn. that the Seaman & White River Herd Areas (HAs) in Nevada are being zeroed out over a period of 10 years! The total number of horses on 475,100 acres is 365!!!! Something like 1300 acres per horse! As always the really odd thing is that altho the horses have to be removed because the forage & water situation is so bad – lo and behold, its perfectly fine for the livestock on the allotments to continue to be there. The comment period took place in January!
The BLM plans on removing 6,000 horses this year according to one of the notices I received.

  8. Judge: BLM broke law in plan to sterilize Idaho wild horses
    Oct. 5, 2017,

BOISE, Idaho (AP) – The U.S. Bureau of Land Management violated environmental law in its plan to sterilize a herd of wild horses in southwestern Idaho, according to a recent ruling from a federal judge.
U.S. District Judge Edward Lodge ruled Friday the BLM failed to analyze consequences of the action and ordered the agency to reconsider its decision.

“The BLM’s decision in this case is arbitrary and capricious because it did not consider the significant impacts its decision may have on the free-roaming nature of the herd nor explain why its decision is appropriate despite those impacts,” Lodge wrote in his 44-page ruling.

The BLM … failed to discuss the obvious contradictions between its decision to maintain a non-reproducing herd and the self-sustaining requirement that includes the herd’s ability to produce ‘viable offspring’ or ‘healthy foals,” wrote Lodge.

A BLM spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

“The BLM’s poorly considered decision to sterilize an entire herd of wild horses in the Saylor Creek Herd Management Area would have destroyed the herd’s natural, wild, and free-roaming behaviors, as well as devastating the herd’s social organization and long-term viability,” said Nick Lawton, an attorney representing the groups, in a prepared statement.
