Colorado State University Withdraws from BLM’s Gruesome Sterilization Experimental Study of Warm Springs Herd Wild Mares
by Carol Walker, Director of Field Documentation, Wild Horse Freedom Federation
Colorado State University just announced that they are “withdrawing our partnership on the surgical spaying of mares. The project is led by the Bureau of Land Management and USGS. The decision to withdraw was made with the support of our involved researchers. ”
This is a tremendous victory for our wild horses and for everyone who wrote the 12,000 excellent comments that the BLM received against this horrific and deadly procedure being used on 100 wild mares, many of them pregnant, from the Warm Springs Herd Management Area in Oregon.
I want to personally thank everyone who sent comments in, who called and emailed CSU and who got the word out against this. Using sterilization on our wild horses and burros , besides being inhumane, cruel, and completely unnecessary it is also contrary to managing wild horses where they are found with the least invasive methods as per the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act.

I’m glad to see a voice of reason stop speaking up with the health and wellfare of the horses involved in their decision. Thank you CSU.

I’m so glad to have written the one professor at the Vet school whose name I could find to ask her to stop this horrific partnership. Really no school wants this kind of involvement with the public knowing about it.

It would be anomalous to infer that by authorizing the custodian of the wild free roaming horses and burros to “manage” them, Congress intended to permit the animals’ custodian to subvert the primary protection policy of the statute by causing any threat to their health and safety and jeopardizing their very existence by capturing and removing from the wild the very animals that Congress sought to protect from being captured and removed from the wild.

It appears (WHE) that BLM in Oregon still is pushing the spaying! Didnt see a college or university involved.
Hopefully that will go away too

The B LM Is extremely corrupted. I have been a witness many times how they “manage” wild horses. They work for the cattle industry. They lie ,cheat , prete find to care . They don’t they hate the horses. This group needs to be fired.

“In the Senate Committee report accompanying the bill that became law the Senate noted, “The committee wishes to emphasize that the management of the wild free-roaming horses and burros be kept to a minimum both from the aspect of reducing costs of such a program as well as to deter the possibility of ‘zoo like’ developments.” S. Rep. 92-242, 92nd Cong., 1st Sess. 1971 at 2152. “An intensive management program of breeding, branding, and physical care would destroy the very concept that this legislation seeks to preserve . . . leaving the animals alone to fend for themselves and placing primary emphasis on protecting the animals from continued slaughter and harassment by man.”

Could not be prouder of CSU — why don’t we encourage and aid them in research that actually will produce ethical results for our wild horses and burros, ON THE RANGE. They are a perfect choice and voice for this.

Going back to the Fort Polk horses… There are fewer and fewer original Spanish Colonial horses for our gene pools. I have 2 Spanish Barbs, one just bred and we are hoping for a colt that fulfills the requirements of the breed. We have so few around the world. There are only about 150 of the Wilber Cruz line and we would like to help preserve them. The Choctaw line is also of great historic importance. Please, please, please help protect them! And, of course, all of our wild horses are from the same Spanish Barb sources and most of the breeds in the USA have some Barb in them

SAFE Food SAFE Horses Coalition
We are only 3 cosponsors away from the magic number of 218, required for a majority for the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act HR.113. Please call and/or fax Congressman Dunn, who is new to Congress, and tell him why it is so important to ban the slaughter of US horses on US soil and abroad, and ask him to please cosponsor. We are at a critical point, and we have Congressman Buchanan’s word that he will get the bill out of committee once we breach this threshold.

Not likely ALL our wild horses have Barb ancestors, but humans have purpose bred so many horse types into breeds for thousands of years it is difficult to separate them without individual DNA testing. Also it’s important to recall that the Barbs also trace back to the origins of all surviving clades, North America.
