Specialty Vehicle Institute of America: “As representatives of national organizations promoting responsible motorized recreation, we are writing in support of the nomination of David Bernhardt to be the next Secretary of the Department of the Interior. At a time when many of the senior posts at the agency lack Senate confirmed executives, a person of Mr. Bernhardt’s experience is sorely needed… Having Mr. Bernhardt at the helm of the Interior Department will strengthen the agency’s resolve to make the lands it manages accessible to the recreating public.”

Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership: “We believe Mr. Bernhardt cares about the Department, and in his work with the TRCP, Mr. Bernhardt has conveyed his commitment to advance the Department’s mission and support its role as steward for the public lands and natural resources that help make America unique. We support Mr. Bernhardt’s nomination for Secretary of the Interior to advance pragmatic conservation.”

United Four Wheel Drive Associations: “In the last two years, we have seen the Department’s renewed interest on the value of recreation on public lands. Outdoor recreation is not only important for the health of the American people, but it also serves to strengthen the economic health of our nation. Increasing access to our public lands, including access for off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation, is an important part of this equation. We have every confidence that as Secretary, Mr. Bernhardt will continue to focus on all the benefits that outdoor recreation affords the American people.”

Western Caucus Foundation: “The Western Caucus Foundation applauds your recent appointment of David Bernhardt to serve as the Secretary of the Department of the Interior.”

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon: “I came away from our meeting impressed and feel you have the right approach and skill set required to guide Interior… Your recognition of expertise in the states is refreshing and I believe we in the states now need to step to the plate and provide responsible leadership. I believe that we are doing that now working in concert with Interior to conserve sage grouse, while managing other valuable economic activities and land uses. Your responsiveness to Wyoming’s concerns with sage grouse management is appreciated.”

  1. Seeing the “joy” of many Indian tribes about this really raises a question – Farm Bureau – who would be surprised by their happiness? This guy is a piece of work – pushing fossil fuel & farm bureau agendas. This is scary for our wild horses and public lands.

Native leaders deliver rebuke of Trump administration at State of Indian Nations

Indian Nations address. Rep. Deb Haaland (D-New Mexico), who is one of the first two Native women in Congress, was equally critical. Speaking from the stage after Keel, she blasted Trump for his “despicable” and all too frequent comments — usually derogatory — about Indigenous peoples, saying they posed a threat to the hopes and dreams of the first Americans, whose traditions have outlasted genocide, colonization and assimilation. “In recent times, that hope has been compromised by a president who fails to acknowledge our nation’s history and, in the process, he fails to live up to the trust obligations of the U.S. government,” said Haaland, who is a citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna. “His ignorant and tone-deaf statements illustrate that our voices have been voice or minimized in the national dialog because we have largely been without Native American representation.” Indianz.Com on SoundCloud: State of Indian Nations #SOIN2019

  4. Committee Votes to Move David Bernhardt’s Nomination as Interior Secretary to Full Senate Vote
    APRIL 8, 2019
    by DAN BACHER

“It’s no surprise that a group of Senators who owe so much to special interest lobbyists would support this choice for Interior Secretary,” said Western Values Project’s Executive Director Chris Saeger in a statement in response to the committee’s vote. “For the last two years, conflict-ridden David Bernhardt has tipped the scales in favor of former clients, likely violating his ethics pledge and responsibilities to the American people.”
    “Western Senators
    Heinrich, Gardner,
    McSally,
    and
Daines greased the wheels to push Bernhardt’s controversial nomination forward before getting clear answers to critical questions regarding his serious conflicts of interests. There is still time for them to reverse this mistake by voting to reject Bernhardt on the floor of the Senate. Until that happens, they will have to live with being known as full-throated supporters of Trump’s conflicted ex-lobbyist pick to run our nation’s public lands,” Saeger said.

Two Democrats, Senators Joe Manchin (WV)
    and
    Mark Heinrich (NM),
    and
Independent Angus King (ME) joined with every Republican on the committee in voting to confirm Bernhardt.
    Western Senators Martha McSally (AZ),
    Cory Gardner (CO),
    and
Steve Daines (MT) also supported the former lobbyist, according to Saeger.

The Washington Post reported this week that, at the request of two watchdog groups and several Senators, Interior’s Office of Inspector General is reviewing evidence that Bernhardt violated his ethics pledge when he acted on behalf of a former client, Westlands Water District.

Then today (April 4) new details released by the New York Times revealed that Bernhardt had continued to associate with the water district at least until his deputy secretary nomination on April 28, 2017, according to Saeger. Within four months of his confirmation as Interior Deputy Secretary, Bernhardt pushed for a decision that would be beneficial for his former client.
