As we light candles against the darkness and imagine the season’s joys and needs, I have an urgent message to share. House and Senate appropriators are meeting at this time to mark up spending language that includes the BLM’s request for millions of $ to round up wild horses and burros to near-extinction levels over 10 years, carry out life-threatening sterilization surgeries on wild mares, and conduct other harmful practices in the name of “fertility control” or “population suppression.”
House Natural Resources Chairman Raul Grijalva, Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, and 11 bi-partisan House members just released a letter calling on Appropriators to block this plan and insert protective language.

In the spirit of Christmas and Hannukkah, I’m attaching two stories illustrating the perils faced by our beloved wild ones and the strides being made by so many good people to release them from incarceration or worse — back into liberty and open air. The Cloud Foundation has just relocated the “Freedom Family” of captured Pryor mustangs to a great new space in southern Colorado. In California and Oregon, Skydog Sanctuary has made some awesome rescues of late, including taking in a whole herd of wild burros from the beleaguered Warm Springs HMA in Oregon. Their story of Goliath & Red Lady is another of many. (On a sorrowful note, I just learned that the Devil’s Garden wild horses that have not been adopted — over 200 are reportedly still in the USFS corrals in California — will be sold for $1 each. This is the end game of roundups, and beyond grief to imagine for these beautiful animals.)

Dear Senator Bennet,
As your constituent, I urge you to take action in support of the just-released letter by Chairmen Raul Grijalva and Jerry Nadler along with 11 House members calling on Senate and House Appropriators to ensure that the final Interior-Environment spending bill protects wild horses and burros. I have just called your office with this message.
The bi-partisan Grijalva appeal raised serious concerns about proposed Bureau of Land Management (BLM) funding for a mass wild horse roundup and removal plan being pushed by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, and shockingly, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the ASPCA, and Return to Freedom, among others.
The plan misleadingly dubbed a “Path Forward for Wild Horse and Burro Management,” calls for the removal of 130,000 wild horses and burros from public lands over the next ten years. Although billed as “non-lethal”, the plan,” would triple the number of wild horses and burros in taxpayer-funded holding with no guarantee of funding for their long term care. In addition to mass removals via helicopter roundup, the funding would allow the BLM to conduct cruel sterilization surgeries to remove the ovaries of wild mares through a procedure that the National Academy of Sciences deemed “inappropriate for field application” due to risk of bleeding and infection. The plan would reduce wild equid herds to population levels that would lead to slow extinction of those remaining on their federally-designated lands. This amounts to an eradication program.
The House letter notes that the spending bill attempts to make fundamental changes to the Wild Horse and Burro Program without hearings, testimony, evidence or any meaningful consideration by the House Natural Resource Committee, the authorizing committee tasked with these responsibilities, or the Senate, which approved it as a line item.
As a key member of the Senate Natural Resources Committee, you have an opportunity to make your views heard, felt and acted on. Please urge conferees to do the following:
– No new funding for BLM to accelerate its broken roundup and removal system;
– Clarify report language so “fertility control” funding can be used solely on implementing the Porcine Zona Pellucida (PZP) fertility control vaccine; and
– Clarify report language to ensure it prohibits use of any appropriated funds to conduct surgical sterilization procedures.

Thank you (all 85,000 people) so much for signing our petition and for supporting us in trying to bring the twins Hope and Promise and their mother Elsa out of the BLM Corrals to our beautiful sanctuary for wild horses.
Finally after months of them being held there, all three horses were put on the BLM internet adoption and some incredible kind caring people bid on them and then donated them to our sanctuary.
