SFTHH Brings You an Equine ‘Feel Good Sunday’

Let’s Catch Our Breath

With all that is not right with the world swirling about us let’s take a day off and simply embrace each other prior to heading off into another week of the war to save the horses.

Today we offer up a couple of videos to make you smile, or maybe flinch…not really sure but whatever strikes your fancy we hope that you have a good day and continue to keep the faith.

Yesterday, Sarah Campion, captured on video a wild deer chasing two race horses down the stretch at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Kentucky.  Not really sure what was going through her head but being that we proudly have a herd of resident deer on our property, there is no telling.  (Usually the horses chase the deer)

Now here is one for you that I really don’t understand but it IS inspired by the horses:

It’s time to Prancercise! Horse-inspired ‘fitness workout’ goes viral

If you haven’t already seen the Internet’s current favorite exercise phenomenon, do yourself a favor and watch “Prancercise: A Fitness Workout.” It is worth every minute.

Joanna Rohrback’s YouTube video, uploaded on Christmas Day last year, become a sensation this week, topping 2 million views today as bewildered viewers passed the video on to each other. Was the skinny lady in the salmon cardigan and uncomfortably tight white pants for real?

Apparently, yes. Rohrback Prancercised her way across the Plaza today, guiding TODAY anchors Natalie Morales and Al Roker through the moves, saying that she is totally “flabbergasted” and “thrilled” by her new status as an Internet celebrity.

“I woke up almost in shock when I saw all the hits on YouTube,” she told TODAY. “It’s like, I think, over 2 million now, and it’s like — wow!”

Rohrback explained to the Daily Beast yesterday that she’d originally shot the video in the late 80s, to pair with her book, “Prancercise: The Art of Physical and Spiritual Excellence.” Back then, of course, YouTube didn’t exist, so most of the world didn’t learn the pony-inspired workout until more than 20 years later.

“I started by doing a very intense exercise routine, it involved power walking with ankle weights, and one day I was hearing a really good tune, and I started to stretch my limbs very rhythmically forward, and the rest is history,” Rohrback told TODAY.

The video is endearing in its goofy little way, and if Prancercising does look slightly ridiculous, it also looks kind of … fun! And, hey, whatever gets you moving. The whole point of Prancercising seems to boil down to this: When Morales asked Rohrback this morning if she would really burn calories with this, Rohrback says back: “Don’t worry about it. Just have fun!”

Rest assured, this is one thing that you will NEVER, EVER see R.T. Fitch do down the center aisle of our barn.  Gangnam Style, yes…Pracercise, NO!  Hope ya’ all have a great day and be sure to hug a horse.  If you don’t have one thriving in your backyard, visit your local rescue and take in some equine quality time.  It would be a win/win for all involved.  May the “Force of the Horse®” be with you and yours!”~ R.T.

  1. Yes, but what if you raised a dollar for the wild horses and burros for each of the 4.6 million views of your Prancercise routine, R.T. — then would you do it? 🙂

P.S. I hope the trainers give the deer a bucket of water and some carrots and apples and a salt lick and a gentle rubdown after her race.

That deer is too cute….here comes the next TC winner – probably was a horse in it’s past life

  3. The deer video was an awesome catch! Prancercise, had me lmao. Does it work, well heck yeah, any exercise is better than being a couch potatoe. Me, I prefer to actually do the work to take care of horses, mucking stall, hauling hay, brushing and saddling to really ride a prancing Morgan, a couple of Arabians and 3 mustangs!

  4. The sad part about the horse sale at keenland is that these are the very horses that are sent to slaughter if they fail to make the grade. Its all about the money.

  5. Prancercise is an offshoot of kids cantering and galloping like horses when they were kids. As an adult yeah it would look silly. But I’m for all learning to move and flexibility. I can see a lot of potential with prancercise.

For the half pass think grapevine working both directions. You have to make sure one leg doesn’t get more stretch than the other. Not an absolute perfect match but doable. Grapevine is walking a line–like right leg is the forward leg followed up by the left leg staying behind the right leg. Then its the left leg’s turn to lead.

I can never remember if its the piaffe thats the trotting in place or is that passage? Heck for this definition I’m going to call piaffe the trotting in place. Now here’s where you march in place. Think ball chop. Ball up over your right shoulder and you bring it down to touch your left knee mid air. Same on left. Again not perfect but doable.

A few weeks ago I saw a trainer at my gym working with a client on what could only be described as passage. They did this high stepping march/trot the length of the gym and back again. Knees came up very high. Not sure I’d be able to do because it looked like high impact aerobics–not good on the knees. I think walking the high stepping march would pass for passage.

Remember if I did this backwards just flip flop them. I don’t have any suggestions for high school dressage–the airs above ground. But hay for the moment this can get you out and start you on your way to better health. Just make sure to have your horse watch the routine so he can give you a big horsie belly laugh!
