America Calls for a Stop to Bloody BLM Wild Horse Roundups

Reno, NV (July 12, 2010)—The Cloud Foundation and the public learned yesterday that seven wild horses died after being rounded up on the first day of the Tuscarora (Owyhee Complex) roundup in Elko County on Saturday, July 10. The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) contractor, Cattoor Livestock, rounded up 228 horses in less than 2 ½ hours over dangerous terrain. Choosing to begin the roundup on private land, BLM prevented the public from observing the first day’s roundup and the condition of the horses after they were captured. The Foundation strongly advises that humane observers be present at all times during roundups and processing to ensure the humane treatment of America’s iconic herds

Horse-Eaters Continue to Spread Rumors and Lies

This is yet another attempt by Wallis to stereotype everyone that believes that animals should be treated humanely as animal terrorists. Since when does compassion for animals make you a terrorist? We are not rushing into feedlots and pulling out horses or livestock in the dead of night. We are not burning down auctions, feedlots or trucks. We are not threatening anyone’s lives. We are advocating for the welfare of animals through print and phone calls. Yes, we’ve had several peaceful rallies for the wild horses but that is far from destructive, violent protests. If anything, those that wish to harm animals are the individuals that start name calling and threatening us. One only has to read the comments on articles to see who is out of control and can’t have a civil conversation. One only has to read Sue Wallis’ comments.

Foreign Governments May Save U.S. Horses While Congress Sleeps at the Wheel

CHICAGO, (EWA) – Since the 107th Congress (2001), equine welfare advocates across the country have been trying to get elected officials to pass legislation to ban the slaughter of American horses. Polls have consistently shown that the legislation has the support of 70% of Americans, but without fail the bills have been stalled, blocked with secret holds, and left off the legislative calendars. Now it appears the European Union (EU) and Canada may stop horse slaughter before Congress.

Unfortunately, your pseudo-sympathetic display falls woefully short of championing horses’ rights to live out their natural lives in peace; after being used up by the rich,”horsey” set, which overwhelming dumps their equine family members when they become too expensive, too old or can’t sire “winners.”

State of Texas Export Pens Feed Mexico’s Horse Slaughter Trade

Recent investigations at several Texas export pens reveal some disturbing issues. The pens, located in Eagle Pass, Socorro and Del Rio, are all operated by the Texas Department of Agriculture. Problems and concerns include: Despite the fact that horses will spend 38 hours or more in transit, no food is provided for the horses at the pens. This is a clear violation of the commercial transport of equines to slaughter regulations.

The Requirements of Justice

There is much debate about the best way to deal with horses whose owners no longer seem to have any desire to care for them. In terms of the solutions proposed by horse owners there are those who support slaughter and those who oppose it. Group A who view horses are mere property much in the same way one views a farm tractor tend to be pro-slaughter. Group B who view their horses as a part of their extended family believe they have a moral obligation to care for them in their old age and oppose slaughter.

Wild Horse Advocates Call for Moratorium on Deadly BLM Round Ups

CHICAGO, (EWA) – Wild horse advocates attending the much anticipated Bureau of Land Management (BLM) workshop on June 15 and 16 found the meeting a marked improvement from their past experiences with BLM, but still far from comforting.
The meeting was announced by BLM director Bob Abbey who promised a new direction in the management of America’s wild horses. But distrust between the advocates, ranchers and the BLM run deep and have grown deeper as BLM has ramped up the removal of mustangs from the range under Obama’s Department of Interior (DOI) director Ken Salazar.
