Debbie Coffey artfully responds to the BLM’s constant quest to remove all of the wild equines from their rightful lands…

ppjg's avatarThe PPJ Gazette

The BLM has ramped up the removal of wild horses at a dizzying pace and it is hard trying to  keep up with them and comment on all of them (maybe that’s why the BLM waited to the last minute to send out all the press releases about roundups).  Below is an open letter to the BLM regarding the Challis Herd Management Area in Idaho.

RE: DOI-BLM-ID-1030-2012-0006-EA

Dear Mr. Lloyd, Mr. Kuck, Mr. Kraayenbrink and Mr. Ellis:

I urge you to select Alternative 5, NO ACTION. Also, the proposed Challis Wild Horse gather may be in violation of laws, and the above proposed Preliminary EA gives misleading information…

  1. Thank you again Ms. Coffey.
This sentence in particular caught my eye: “Has the BLM so badly managed the rangeland within the CHMA that only 185 wild horses could be supported on 154,150 BLM acres of their federally protected Herd Management Area?”

Using that calculation it would allow each and every wild horse 833 acres. Now read here what BLM said about number of acres needed per wild horse (240):

    “Did You Know?
Most western rangelands produce only a few hundred pounds of vegetation per acre. Because a horse can eat their weight in dry forage every month, in many parts of Nevada, it can take 20 or more acres to feed one horse for a month.”
    http://www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/prog/wh_b/appropriate_management.html

So using the BLM average of 240 acres per wild horse … on the Challis HMA of 154,150 acres … the HMA could support 642 wild horses!

  2. AML for wild horses and the BLM may “adjust horse numbers to a lower level if causing unacceptable levels of resource degradation.” ~BLM

What about the unacceptable levels to the point of degradation of the gene pool of the wild horses? Why is this never factored into the equation? To man, the entire earth is just a “resource.”

  3. “Also, the proposed Challis Wild Horse gather may be in violation of laws, and the above proposed Preliminary EA gives misleading information to the American public.” May be in violation???? ARE IN VIOLATION! Wild horses/burros are supposed to take precedence over cattle/sheep invasive species.
    There is no justice.

Wild Horse Roundup – Challis, Idaho July 2009
On July 23- 28,2009, the BLM rounded up 364 wild horses in Idaho, known as The Challis Herd. Educate yourself http://www.wildhorsepreservation.com/ and please take action . I’ve photographed this herd for over 5 years and I was there to take pictures of a brutal helicopter chase, round up & holding pens. What you don’t know by watching this is that these horses were pushed 10+ miles in 100 degree heat. Some of these wild horses will be re-released, some will be adopted, but the majority will end up in government holding pens. And guess who’s paying for it all? The American Taxpayer to the tune of $29 million a year. These are our horses, on our public land and from what I’ve witnessed, they were doing just fine on their own.
If you find this video disturbing, please take the time to speak out for them. With 33,000 wild horses in Government holding pens, why are we adding to this outrageous number, when they could be living for free, on public land designated to protect them by the Wild & Free Roaming Horse & Burro Act? There are better, kinder and more effective ways to manage these horses.
Please tell your Senators to support HR 1018 “Restore Our American Mustangs” (ROAM). It has already passed the House. It’s too late for most of these horses… The intricate social dynamics of the Challis Herd have been crushed… Family bands broken up, foals orphaned, and 7 horses died needlessly.

  5. Both Republican and Democratic parties favor dotting energy plants across the country. Pres. Obama is allowing the sale of land rights at a dizzying speed til all the land will be dotted by energy plants. if you google gas fracking, it will make you cry to see what the government is allowing to be done to our beautiful public lands, all for money, greed and lack of forsight to future generations.
Please investigate for yourself and voice your opinions to our politicians. Please do not let them ruin all of the open spaces. The gas fracking uses millions of gallons of water and pumps in a tremendous amount of toxic chemicals into the water supply. This will kill off all the horses and burros, so I believe that is why such an intense roundup schedule is in the near future. By 2013 all of the wild horses and burros will be gone. It is everyone’s fault for not stopping this holocaust. The politicians do not realize what they are voting for. Please tell everyone you come in contact with to investigate and voice your concern immediately. Big money is taking over all of the public lands and soon will not be able to turn back without huge lawsuits and more money wasted.
