In a blow to House GOP leaders, the House on Thursday rejected a five-year farm bill.

Members voted down the $940 billion bill in a 195-234 vote that only won 24 Democratic votes. Most Democrats voted against the bill because it cut food stamp programs by more than $20 billion.

Many Republicans also voted no, but for a different reason. They said it was too expensive a bill to pass when the country has $17 trillion in debt.

In the final vote, 62 Republicans opposed the bill, and with the Democratic defections, that was enough to send it to defeat.

The final tally was delayed for several minutes as GOP leaders held the vote open, while Democrats called for the vote to close…(CONTINUED)

    • Agreed Barbara. In the article, King is the main person quoted. And King blames this & that on the failing of the Farm Bill….not on HIS dictatorship, unbelievable “King Amendment.” The King Amendment got so much publicity. And NOT mentioned in this article?! King & Goodlatte…two corrupt devils w/o morals nor conscience.

  1. Glad to see my new rep Juan Vargas voted NO. Time to send him a thank you. Of course I’ll still be keeping on him as the Farm Bill is certainly going to come back.

  2. While 20 B reduction in food stamps would definitely hurt people that includes 200,000 children, nothing is ever said about our animals. That’s a shame. I’m glad for my Rep though. She tends to vote like I would. Thank you RT for posting the roll call.

  3. My Representative, Joe Barton Tx-R never voted for a humane bill in his life… would cost him too much support.. I just would love to know if the King Amendment and its attack on Animals, Food Safety, and State’s Rights actually changed anyone’s mind, or it was strickly SNAP. children’s school lunchs, and crop support.

    • I plan on calling my Rep tomorrow and thanking him for the NO vote. I also will be asking him what was seemingly the deciding factor among the Nay voters. I too want to know if there was a disgust over stripping of animal welfare amendments but putting through the King amendment. I want to see if I can suss out how big of a voice we are and how loudly we are getting through to our reps.

      • thanks Morgan. I am very interested to learn what I can. If there were anyway that it would make a difference here in Texas. I recognized one Texan that voted NO.. Lloyd Doggett D-Tx I’m going to try to check out the others.. I don’t like Republicans much for many reasons, but would love to find that just one Tx Republican voted against it… i could make a big deal out of thanking him or her..
I’m going to check.. Perhaps Shirley Johnson voted no… I’m sure that list with their St and dist will surface soon.

  5. I am ashamed of John Shimkus! He is from my town and I have to say, I cannot imagine what would compel him to vote yes on this mess. However, another Illinoisian was right on target and voted it into the FIRE! At least some represent us and stand tall!
