R.T. Fitch

R.T. Fitch’s life has been anything but ordinary. Straight out of high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force Band during the Vietnam era, and while stationed in Hawaii, he spent weekends at Sea Life Park training penguins, sea lions, and whales. His path through life has taken many unexpected turns—including more than a few lessons in love—until meeting his wife, Terry, brought a lasting partnership and a shared passion for animals.
Over the course of his adult career, R.T. worked internationally in multiple countries, gaining a broad, global perspective that colors both his worldview and his writing. Now rooted in Texas, he and Terry live on a small farm surrounded by four-legged companions with paws, claws, and hooves. Together, they have devoted years to equine rescue and wild horse protection.
An ordained volunteer chaplain and professional Santa Claus for a local historical society—with Terry by his side as Mrs. Claus—R.T. brings warmth, wisdom, and joy to every season. His work reflects a life of service, wonder, and connection to both people and animals.
He is the author of Straight from the Horse’s Heart, a moving collection of true rescue stories and spiritual reflections, and Fangs of Light, a supernatural tale steeped in symbolic and metaphorical storytelling. The first in a planned trilogy, Fangs of Light blends myth and mystery to explore themes of identity, redemption, and the power of empathy—offering readers not only suspense and intrigue but a deeper look at the light and shadow within us all.

Happy New Year: Reflection, Hope and Promise

It’s a New Year, a new decade and with that a new day of hope.

Today is a day off, for most, where we take time to reflect on what we have achieved and, hopefully, plan for a better and much improved future.

The key phrase that we should cling to, today, is that “We are in charge of our own destiny; we truly are captains of our ship/fate.”

It’s that simple, it’s that pure…without waxing sentimental we would like to leave that thought with you, today.

Have a safe and restful holiday, my friends, as we look forward to a future of opportunity and promise.

Un-wilding Wild Horse Lands

by Charlotte Roe as published on High Country News Jonathan Thompson aptly calls out Bureau of Land Management Acting Director William Perry Pendley’s big lie about the “existential threat” to public lands (“BLM chief ’s wild horse fixation,” 11/25/19). Sadly, Thompson goes on to refer to the estimated 88,000 wild […]

Merry Christmas from the Stable, Past and Present

An excerpt from R.T. Fitch‘s book ~ Straight from the Horse’s Heart: A Spiritual Ride through Love, Loss and Hope

“First published on SFTHH in 2009, ten years ago, this tale rings as true today as it did then.  For me it brings back memories of four legged friends I have lost yet still reside so solidly in my heart.  Two equine souls and one canine, from this story, have crossed the bridge and I feel a twinge of grief each and every time I think of them.  They, all of them, have made such a divine imprint upon my heart and continually remind me to stay the course, don’t ever give up and to share the love that they so selflessly showered upon me.

So on this magical day, we offer up another Christmas story and challenge you to an exercise.  If you have read this before, please, read it again, if you have not, give it a shot.  Stretch your imagination and open your heart, there is magic afoot this day.  What appears to your heart in words, may be closer to the truth than what your mind may perceive.  Feel your warmth, be aware of your special presence and share your love with family and friends.  Let the love roll.  Peace on, my friends, and keep the faith.” ~ R.T.

Wild Horses and Burros: Twas the Night before Christmas

“First published on Christmas Day in 2009, 10 years ago; the evil characters may have changed but the message still rings true to this very day.  The roundups must stop so that we can appropriately care for and manage, if needed, our national treasures on their rightful range.  At Wild Horse Freedom Federation we offer the gift of our continued fight in support of the Wild Horses and Burros to live free with their families on their promised public land.  Merry Christmas to all and to all a good fight!” ~ R.T.
