Wild Horses Continue to Die Behind Closed Gates from BLM Mismanagment

In the face of public and Congressional outrage over the roundup of nearly 2,000 wild horses from Nevada’s Calico Mountains region, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced plans to control and minimize criticism by restricting the very limited public viewing of its operations to a small group of cherry-picked organizations and individuals. The agency is ramping up its capture plans, with over 5,000 more wild horses targeted for roundup and removal over the next four months.

Stress is Killing the Captive Calico Wild Horses

Day after day since the beginning of the “gather” of the wild horses who once freely roamed Nevada’s Calico Mountains, the BLM has reported the deaths of the horses who were forced into its clutches. Though the Gather Daily Updates report that the total of equine lives lost as a direct result of this roundup is 79, a truer mortality tally is more than 90, in addition to the dozens of in utero foals who perished through miscarriages or as a consequence of the demise of the dams.

Calico Wild Horses are out of Sight, but not out of Mind

Out of sight, out of mind. That’s what the BLM is hoping will happen to the captive wild horses from the Calico Mountains. The agency has used the Easter holiday as a rationale for cancelling the usual Sunday public visiting hours, so we’re literally in the dark about what’s happening behind the closed doors of the 320-are feedlot near Fallon, Nevada.

HOUSTON, (Horseback) – The federal Bureau of Land Management has released a veterinary report to Horseback Magazine that was requested by several individuals and advocacy groups. The report provides sketchy details on the final days of a foal filmed by photo journalist and videographer Laura Leigh on assignment for Horseback during a Nevada “gather” of wild horses.

UPDATE: BLM Ignores Media while Continuing Deadly Assault on Native Wild Horses

HOUSTON, (Horseback) – The federal Bureau of Land Management has ceased communicating with Horseback Magazine.

On December 31, the magazine sent several pointed questions to the bureau and copied the email to its director Bob Abbey. The agency has not responded since, despite follow-up emails to both its Nevada spokesperson, Heather Emmons, and it’s chief Washington spokesman, Tom Gorey.
