14 Year Old Campaigns to Save U.S. Horses

My name is Cheyenne Little, I’m a 14-year-old girl who lives in Grass Valley. You might remember me as the kid who wrote the “More than a little help” article a few months back. My horse China’s doing great, I’m doing great. But there’s one thing that’s not so great. And I’m asking for the help and support of my community to change that status. I recently started a petition against the reopening of equine slaughter in the U.S. Before equine slaughter was made illegal in 2007, over 25,000 horses each year were being processed and shipped out of the country for human consumption.

We, as horse people, enjoy sharing stories of our bonding and relationships with our equine companions. Likewise, many of us have other four legged friends including the ever faithful canines. The video featured, today, is of a little dog named Frenchie and his fascination with a police horse at the Occupy Wall Street protest. A simple moment of a little dog, excited beyond all comprehension, trying to show his happiness over meeting such a large and compassionate four legged brother. You can cut his excitement with a knife.

International Equine Conference Blasts Off in DC

WASHINGTON D.C. (WHFF)- Day one of the first annual International Equine Conference started with a stunning schedule of noted equine professionals from across the United States and beyond. Speaking to a packed house, such notables as scientists Dr. Ann Marini and Dr. Marlene Haffner spoke on issue of food safety and dangers of foreign consumers eating drug tainted, slaughtered American horses while a score of international experts presented to the audience programs on equine health, welfare and ways forward to ensure a solid foundation for a sustainable and humane future for America’s revered companion animals, the horse.

Critical Week In Stopping the Flow of Cross Border Horse Slaughter

Introduced in June by Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA), the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1176) would prohibit the interstate/international transport and transfer of ownership of any equine intended for slaughter for human consumption. If passed, this bill will finally stop the flow of U.S. horses into Mexico and Canada, where they are processed for their meat and eaten overseas.

We were There: An Equine Christmas Story

It was like any other evening feeding of the horses, yet it was not; or not quite, as something was different. The air was crisp and cool as Christmas was only a week away in South Louisiana, but the feeling had little to do with temperature or barometric pressure. There was an electric buzz in the air; the feeling of white noise just outside the audible range of the human ear. There was something tangible and moving in the barn that night.
