Montana’s Rep. “Red” Ed Butcher Painting Red on Red

Bloody “Red” Ed Butcher still trying to promote “Flicka Fillets” in Montana through Communism

Hot off the press from the Billings Gazette’s Tom Lutley

Foreign investors are considering Hardin, MT for a horse-slaughtering plant, according an economic development official who recently toured a potential site with interested parties.

Jeff McDowell, Two Rivers Authority executive director, said investors with ties to China toured Hardin’s shuttered sugar beet plant earlier this month. The tour was arranged by Rep. Ed Butcher, R-Winifred, author of a 2009 state law promoting construction of a horse slaughter facility.

“There were two things in particular they were looking at,” McDowell said. “They were considering our somewhat rural location and our relative proximity to an airport that can handle 747s.”

McDowell said the visitors were a Chinese-American businessman, his daughter and a college professor friend.

  1. There’s something definitely wrong in his gene pool! He looks mentally defective or developmentally challenged if you want to be PC! Why would anyone vote for him? Sue Wallis is a “cutie” too. As my mom used to say, “A thing of beauty is a joy forever.”

  2. I’m glad I don’t live in Montana- I feel sorry for the people who live there that DO NOT want a horse slaughter-house in their “back yard”. If these people would speak out LOUDLY against a plant maybe their representatives would listen. We all have seen what publicity the anti-round-up demonstrations are getting. GET OUT THERE PEOPLE OF MONTANA!!! LET YOUR VOICES BE HEARD!!!

  3. If slaughter comes back to the U.S., it may well take place right in my backyard. There has been serious talk in the local pro-slaughter camp about building a plant right here San Juan County, NM.

We have a number of quarterhorse, thoroughbred, and other operations who overbreed to get that “winning” or “perfect” horse. They consider slaughter part of their bottom line.

Also horses kidnapped by the USFS & BLM, horses from the Navajo Reservation, and horses from individuals who just want to turn a few bucks.

At the rescue, we often get calls from folks asking what they should do with horses that have been long-time family pets, rodeo and sport campaigners that are injured or beyond their “useful years”, or those who are not a good match for their owners.

We give them advice in the best interest of the horse, but I know many end up at the sale barn. This is so irresponsible and tragic!

    • The pro-slaughter camp says only sick, old, mean crippled horses will go to “humane processing facilities”. BUT perfectly nice, healthy, well-bred, young, sound horses are sent to their death everyday. Why? Not because the economy is bad, or hay and feed cost too much, or people loose their jobs or get sick. These horses can usually find their way to an equine rescue. Its because people are breeding way too many horses. From racehorses to cow ponies, breeding thousands upon thousands of horses that MIGHT become that million$ race horse or have that perfect color or type is irresponsible. Not to mention the nurse-mares,premarin mares and babies. If there was no monetary incentive, no paycheck at the sound of an auctioneers’ gavel people would be a lot more inclined to stop over-breeding.

    • Another reason why you don’t want to live anywhere NEAR a slaughter house is the fact that it will drive horse theft in the area right out the roof. I have had PERSONAL experience with this situation, so I know whereof I speak. I lived and owned horses in Dallas, TX when Dallas Crown and Beltex were still in operation.

It’s sick and horrible and you don’t want any part of it.

    • For an injured or sick horse, humane euthenasia is my only option. Don’t get Slaughter and Humane Euthenasia confused, they are both completely different issues. I know that if I had to part with a horse because of a severe injury or severely compromised quality of life, I would call in my local vet, and I have had two instances of having to do that, it is heartbreaking. Unfortuately many people want to make a buck on the deal because they dont want to have to pay to get rid of the horse and then there are others who really believe that the local sale barn and friendly kill buyer in the guise of a loving forever home with wonderful green pastures to retire in is real.

      • The UOH folks are trying to convince people slaughter IS a form of humane euthanasia. They are flooding the net with misinformation convincing people to become “members” of their ugly organization.

      • After going to the Sugarcreek auction in Ohio, it was painfully clear the killer buyers ‘team up’ and drive up prices on horses that rescues and everday people are trying to buy. A truck load of Thoroughbreds came in at the last minute making it almost impossible to check tattoos and check out the condition of the horses.

  4. I tried to respond to Uttley’s article (in order to refute some of the statements it contained, such as the implication that no US horses were currently going to slaughter for human consumption) using the email address for him at the bottom, but it bounced. Maybe it had a typo? It was: ‘attlutey@billingsgazette.com’

  5. I have corresponded with Dave Wanzenried, (daveew@gmail.com), elected to the Montana legislature from Missoula. I wrote him before Christmas thanking him for his work and he responded back, confirming his tenacious stance against this issue. There are some good people up there–just some rotten apples in the barrel.

  6. R.T….come on!!!! Photoshopping again????? He really looks like that???? I thought your fun with Slaughter Sue’s photo was pretty funny (reminding me of the main character on the cartoon “American Dad”), but seriously….this is an undistorted photo?

Another point: just exactly where is Horseflesh Red going to get enopugh equines to maintain a profitable horse slaughter facility perpetually?… And the trolls that feed the Mexican/off-shore/Canada slaughter are going to allow usurpers? There aren’t enough horses in the US to justify a new plant. Unless, of course those good, old, conscientious breeders are going to go back to full blown breeding to find the “diamond” based on quantity, not quality.

D Masters, you are not too far off course…I think they have real big plans, with our wild and overbreeding. We have to get 503 passed, keep calling, faxing and writing.

  10. Boy, if this ever goes through we’ll have to spread the word to watch your dogs and cats. They’ll be next…. If a non-food animal like our horses are not safe, what is stop them from exporting dog and cat meat to Asian markets?

BTW-we’ll have something on the food safety issue in the next few days. We are trying to get some additional key info to add to the info we received over the last few days. Stay tuned – RT will post it when we are ready to roll.

  11. Janet horse meat is a delicacy in Japan, they are one of the biggest culprits (along with Belgium, France and other European countries), look what happened to the Derby winner Ferdinand after the Japanese bought him for stud, his babies didnt amount to much so they slaughtered him and ate him!!! Makes me sick, I think it has actually evoked a reaction in the racing industry when horses are sold to Japan now, they cover their butts to try to stop this happening again, but that is hearsay so I cant say that is gospel.
