Wild Horses Continue to Die Behind Closed Gates from BLM Mismanagment

News from In Defense of Animals

Yet they Plan to Secretly Capture 5,000 More

Sorro - example of poor BLM care; the weekly observers, when there WERE observers, had to point this out to the detached BLM employees. Showing this graphic proof probably pissed them off as they locked the gates after this abuse was reported!! Thank you Obama, Salazar and Abbey- (Photo by Laura Leigh)

In the face of public and Congressional outrage over the roundup of nearly 2,000 wild horses from Nevada’s Calico Mountains region, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced plans to control and minimize criticism by restricting the very limited public viewing of its operations to a small group of cherry-picked organizations and individuals. The agency is ramping up its capture plans, with over 5,000 more wild horses targeted for roundup and removal over the next four months.By its own admission, BLM’s crackdown on public observation of its roundup activities and wild horse holding facilities is designed to control images released on blogs, YouTube and other social media, thereby quashing escalating public opposition to the agency’s handling of America’s treasured mustangs.

We can’t let the BLM get away with this. The agency ignores the wishes of the American public by clearing wild horses off the land to make room for cattle ranchers and gas and mining companies who want to exploit public lands. Most of these formerly free mustangs are stockpiled in BLM holding facilities in the Midwest, costing taxpayers tens of millions of dollars annually. Now this public agency is attempting to prevent all but a handpicked few from observing and documenting its treatment of the wild horses who are beloved by so many Americans.

(I hope that we are one of the Blogs that is making the Federally Funded Horse Abusers sweat.  It would be an honor – R.T.)

    • Well its gettng so much worse..Read the EA and documentation on the Silver King HMA EA…the worse so far..it was combined with 8 HMAs for a complex..now..they are taking away 2 of those HMAs-zeroing them out..There are over 58,000 cattle on there, numerous sheep..many of the cattle allotments are “year around”..and they will remove all but 60 horses and those that remain will ALL be treated with PZP to be a “non breeding herd…and 60% of the horses returned will be stallions..who will be continuously breeding mares that cycle..causing reproductive damage to those mares..It is cruel and unusual treatment….SUE! SUE! SUE!

Please submit the form at this link today. Ask your representatives in Congress to force the BLM to allow the public to see and document how the agency is spending tax dollars to roundup and hold wild horses and burros. After you submit the form, please call your senators and representatives to follow up and ask them what action they have taken on this issue.

  2. IDA/BIR, others that can…don’t wait and file NOW! Take the sinking DOI ship akin to the Deepwater Horizon rig and sieze the initiative (military tactic).

File those lawsuits NOW! I bet you could even find legal pleadings within the responses/filings of the litigants against the eep water drilling advocates (not that I support them, but that so-called legal trash that DOI put out there is just pathetic and incompetent…once again).

  3. It just dawned on me. Wouldn’t it be something if the folks of the Gulf joined with us to demand the resignation of Salazar with a resource/environ friendly replacement, speedy reorganizatio of DOI and a serious reexamination of our resources policy in this country like those freaking grazing permits and leases?

I’m not against energy…I’m against the current system.

BTW, anyone starting to wonder what the US may have to pay to other countries becuase of the pollution and economic losses when this slime hits their shores in and around the GULF…it is not going to be fun OR cheap.

  4. Don’t count of the folks in the gulf…given their decision to support continued drilling..Rightly or wrongley..they see drilling as their only source of income now that tourism and fishing is gone…they cannot support a moratorium for 6 months while we get this figured out..6 months..for crying out loud..much of america has been on unemployment for 2 years..I have little sympathy..now.. for those people

    • My point was that DOI can’t even clean-up coordinate, file lawsuits OR know the difference between responsible or irresponsible drillers.

There are over 3000 rigs in the Gulf; 33 are deep water. There are multiple companies in the Gulf that don’t have the violations that BP acheived; BP- 760, all other corporations combined- 1.

OK…so what is wrong with that picture? I think you underestimate the anger at DOI (that keeps being hefted on BP by Obama and the media) in the Gulf. I’m not saying every other corp in the Gulf (or anywhere else for that matter) is a saint. I’m saying that BP is serious, real time screwed-up broken with a ton of enabling from DOI.

It is the visual, real-time validation (the Gulf) of incompetence spewing from DOI that the equine and other environ, wildlife experts have been battling and screaming about for decades.

      • Yes – let me repeat that in case someone missed it –

        There are over 3000 rigs in the Gulf; 33 are deep water. There are multiple companies in the Gulf that don’t have the violations that BP acheived;

BP- 760 (SEVEN HUNDRED AND SIXTY), all other corporations combined- 1 (ONE).

Frankly, I’m more worried about all the other BP projects than I am the outcome of Deepwater – think about it – how many others, and CNG, are constructed exactly the same way all around the country, world? And most during the last 10 years –

Rolling Stone – “…President Bush had lifted an executive moratorium on offshore drilling outside the Gulf that had been implemented by his father following the Exxon Valdez.”…Exxon Valdez – also BP, add to that – When did Cheney lift regulations?

So were most of those 33 rigs constructed within the last 8 to 9 years?

    • Why doesn’t BP put those unemployed oil riggers and all the laid off in the area to work on the clean up! Move them and put them up in the motels where they need to be to sweep the beaches, help with the animals, mabye even some work can be done on the marshes, that will help support the tourist industry and the food industries there also.

The term “this isn’t rocket science” isn’t even applicable – numb brains!

      • Yeh, BP should be nothing but the bankroll for this operation. I don’t care about their “interests”. If they were “interested”, they’d stop spending millions and millions on TV commercials and put that money where it’s needed.

One of the parish presidents put it plainly when he said the best commercial for BP would be for them to do the right thing. Then the people of the Gulf, themselves, would be singing their praises and they wouldn’t need all the PR.

        Like

    • Me neither. Especially since the moratorium only affects 33 out of 6500 rigs in the Gulf. These people can’t even go 60 days without wanting to drill again and while the ocean is leaking 60,000 barrels a day!!

  8. WHY would you geld a 25 year old stallion??? You, the vet are “sick” and perverted”

“Two deaths occurred this week: a 12-year-old stallion (#1406) suffered a spinal neck injury, and a 25-year-old gelding (#1337) was found dead. Necropsy was performed and the gelding’s death was due to pulmonary hemorrhage caused from anesthesia”

Notice for the first time they are giving the freeze brand #s of dead horses..Do you ever wonder if some of these deaths are do to “medical experimentation?” Gelding of a 25 year old stallion is ‘cruel and unusal treatment” shouldn’t these horses be placed in preserves or sanctuarys as opposed to death by shock..Have you NO humanity..how much longer do you think this stallion had to live..wouldn’t it have been more humane to just put him down..you are some sick puppies!

    • they’ve given out tag #’s before, but it’s pretty sad that a 25 year old elder stallion couldn’t find someone in the processing line to give him a reprieve, instead of sending him through the horror of the squeeze chute and the shock of gelding, BLM could have been proactive, put out an appeal for these older guys to see if there was a place for them to live out their lives, instead, “business as usual.” it’s really disheartening.

Well, he is luckier than the other 25 somethings going to holding – they will not be adopted – maybe some will be lucky like the Pryor ones – I hope so much so – anyone seeing that as a real possibility?

    • Actually, this institutionalized perverse cruelty, selfishness and meaness for our wild ones reminds me of Wounded Knee…not that equines are equal to humans, but by God the mindset that thinks it’s OK to whack either is very similar.

  9. BLM is killing them all. They kill them slow or fast!

I have asked, posted on DOI website, sent 100s of emails, over and over for 24/7 public webcams so the public can watch the BLM facilities without ‘bothering the poor cowboys ‘work’.

The BLM and DOI have totally IGNORED that request because they KNOW they are horse killers!

I wish hundreds of people would call the LOCAL law and make reports on the BLM for animal abuse. Report to HSUS and SPCA online webforms with abuse reports too.
Set out hidden game and hidden cams to catch them ‘in the act’ of animal abuse. Do fly overs/high def photos- and publish the results IN PUBLIC. Do criminal background checks on all those BLM ‘names’ and post the results in public. Set PIs on them and find the killbuyers who buy the slaughter horses.
Sue them as individuals for the abuse of power of their federal jobs.
What I mean is we need to stop chipping away at their LIEs and start swinging thousands of sledge-hammers or they will get away with their crimes and all wild horses will be gone.
‘Talk’ doesn’t work with them, they are federal employees out of control of the public, maybe corrupt and take bribes and gifts. They need to be in Federal prison in my opinion!

  10. The BLM Vet is a sham, about as crappy as a Vet could be. Anyone check to see if he is a ‘real Vet’ or just another smooth talker who weasled his way into Gov work.??

He makes way to many mistakes that kill animals to be any Vet that would make a decent public Vet.

Learn how to dart animals you idiot Vet and use real drugs that make the animal unaware- you horse killer Vet!!

Thats my opinion of the BLM Vet, he sucks!!

  11. Thanks for the article, R.T. It’s kind of hard to read through my tears. I’m SO upset & ANGRY!! I wish I could PERSONALLY do something to really help these poor abused horses, like setting them all free(after PROPER vet. care!!), or just taking them away to a safe hiding place, to a safe forever home! WHY are there people out there like those BLM government assholes?! WHY can’t WE STOP them??!! It seems like evil is running rampant & out of control, & it feels like your hands are tied & you can’t do anything about it, & it makes me absolutely sick to my stomach!

    • Just one caution, that I learned the hard way. Don’t sign petitions that demand the law be followed or ask that the law be obeyed. The law, as it is currently written is not on the side of the horses.

Ask for the moretorium, ask for real science, ask for ROAM if you decide that is a good thing, etc.

I follow the recommendations from The Cloud Foundation and In Defense of Animals (IDA) only. Sign those petitions, etc.

Here, I ask more questions repeat arguments I find I cannot answer, here I know I can count on a good education from those with more knowlege.

I can say honestly that 1/2 of what I have learned has been by being corrected by the wonderful folks here, providing links and evidence, and getting on me on occasion (ok, a little more than on occasion). Keep up the good fight. And we may all learn something new from each other.

That ladies and gentlemen pretty much says it all and what we are up against….no respect, no science, no consideration and Congress and the Executive Branch (Obama et al) let these regulatory agencies just roll a long WITH funding.

Got another spinich recall in the mid-atlantic. Did you hear anout it? I suspect not. It was caught by the Dept of Ag in NC. My question? Just exactly what does the USDA do other than peddle international trade, farm subsidies and sloppy inspection?

Hey Republicans (ag state Dems pull the same poop) and tea-baggers…want to cut the deficet? Start with USDA and you can take a big chunk out of the DOI’s wild horse and burro program with a big magnifying glass on grazing permits and mineral leases…..oh, that’s right, that is what new named MMS/DOI is already back peddling on. Yeah right….and chicken have teeth, pigs can fly; well maybe they can if you submit the right subsidy or grazing permit.
