It is not a secret that horses in America are not considered food animals but are rather regarded as large companions or athletes, bred to trust their human masters, provide them leisure and to perform at the track like professional sportsmen, and as such, horses are raised, fed and medicated in a totally different fashion than real food animals like beef cattle, sheep or pigs. Never considered part of the food chain in this country (not even in the hardest times, where it was sold primarily to poor European immigrants as a cheap replacement for beef), horses are routinely administered all kinds of drugs, food supplements and miscellaneous substances that, under current American and European laws, theoretically prohibits them from being used as human food yet, last year alone, more than seventy million pounds of tainted horsemeat from America’s pet horses were sent abroad for human consumption…

Straight from the Horse's Heart 
This singular issue not only highlights the plight of nonfood equines, but start to confirm many suspicions and downright outrage of the safety of our “traditional” animal based protein sources (although USDA and states foo-bar veggies too) in the food chain.
It has always been my contention that when an agency or interest protects and perpetuates this kind off reckless disregard of regulations and rules for a small special interest group, you (the perps) begin to reveal exactly how BAD our food system really is.
Thank you…becoming more vegan every day with an emphasis on local and organic farming (btw…get no help from USDA, etc).

It is my understanding Missouri is wanting to reopen the slaughter house which was closed by the feds a few yrs. back. I live in the midst of many thousands of acres of grass that goes uncut each year…I suppose the farmers/ranchers are paid to let it go, but I really have no clue. Sad but true, the price of hay is skyrocketing when fields could be cut.
