AG King Leads Fight Against Horse Slaughter in New Mexico

AG’s Request for TRO Granted; In Effect Until Jan. 3 Hearing

Gary-King(SANTA FE)—New Mexico Attorney General Gary King applauds the efforts of his office as they together continue working to stop Valley Meats from beginning commercial horse slaughter operations in Roswell, New Mexico.

At AG King’s request, First Judicial District Court Judge Matthew Wilson has issued a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) that stops Valley Meats from opening as they planned January 1, 2014.

Attorney General King sought the TRO because Valley Meat had stated it would begin operating even though it lacked the required regulatory approval. With the newly scheduled hearing, the court can now more fully consider the dangers posed by commercial horse slaughter and Valley Meat’s long history of non-compliance with existing laws.

The hearing on AG King’s request for a longer-term injunction is January 3, 2014 in the First Judicial District courthouse in Santa Fe.

On December 19, Attorney General King filed a lawsuit against Valley Meat Company, its owner and two related companies that want to bring commercial horse slaughter to New Mexico.  Commercial horse slaughter is a new, untested enterprise that poses health and environmental risks to New Mexicans. Horses in America are not raised to be eaten, and are widely administered drugs that are forbidden for use in food animals.

  1. The lines have been drawn…It’s now We the People versus the laws of our land. Unfortunately when cases go before judges the law is the ultimate winner. No matter how old, or what the original intent of the laws were they are often used by those in power to enforce their own “rights”.

Who among us believes that ‘water rights’ on Public Lands should belong to Private Interests? Who thinks the current management strategy of the BLM aligns with the spirit of the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971?

Well AG King is using the 3 laws, the Water Quality Act, the New Mexico Food Act, and Unfair Practices Act to help protect the people of the surrounding area and thus the rest of the nation from the re-instigation of the most heinous act of horse slaughter in this country.

Is he using this platform for political gain? WHO CARES? If I lived in New Mexico I would vote for him no matter as the current Governor is looking to be the next Sarah Palin.

Good Luck AG King and God be with you!

  2. I’d love to see sheriffs posted at his door, with citations in hand if tge lights go on at this hellhole called a business. WHEN law enforcement enforces the laws, we will return to sensible discussions. Make no mistake, tthe reason we are here is DUE in whole to law enforcement excusing criminalities’ brutal businesses. Law is the bullet prooof vest, the SWAT vehicle for society. Without it, we find ourselves here, depending on the courts. The laws cited in the NM AG complaint were in placed and violated over and over, with little compense. Despite ranchers and “livestock” mentalities of “way of life” being such a “honorable tradition”, we are finding that their way is the criminals’ way and needs the comeuppance of accountability, including the agencies charged with safeguarding our nation’s values of humane handling of our animals. The article by Reuters describing their investigation into cattle slaughter was horrific. As bad as that faced by horses. No wonder cattle/sheep/pig people want no eyes on the “industry.”. This AG suit is a wake up. Shameful.

  3. Contemplate all the laws for human waste disposal or even human remains or domestic animal remains disposal and yet they can take hundreds of dead animals and pile them, and dump the affluent into open ponds. Its not ok just because they are part of the good ole boys club. Absurd. Thank you AG Mr. Gary King!

    • Saraannon – just checked on the “18 year olds” blog. Unsurprising my comment never made it thru moderation. My main question to her was: when its time for your horse to be put down, will you do it humanely or put him on a truck & send him to slaughter? Apparently, she didn’t feel it necessary to answer it.

      • If there is a ‘she’ at all! The photos are WAY to professional looking for a busy teen, and the girl looks like way too much like every other blonde AQHA model that shows up in their ads. Take a hundred horse blogs and there isn’t going to be one that is Miss Perfect Teen. I do tend to think that ‘slaughter savy’ is a front for the American Slaughter Horse Association.

      • Miss perfect teen has suddenly switched mounts! She no longer has a bay QH, but has the anti-QH, a “paint Arab cross rescue’, instead and claims her pro quality photos are taken by her mother.
The upside is that whoever is running the blog is running scared, the downside is that they are following the commentators awfully closely. Either way, getting the information out there is making the pro-slaughter folks nervous! So please keep it up!

  4. Please there is a short list that AG King needs to carry. The questions are if suddenly using Canada Feedlot horses are they drug tested prior to slaughter for safety? How long will they use Canada horses? USDA and Canada requirements side by side are different we cannot use horses that have different requirements. Bute is still an issue as well, antibiotics. The fact is they have No details on how much is given to horses and what period of time, so even the standard withdrawal time is ineffective by US standards. What is Exact time frame for using Canada plants horses? EU cannot accept meat so is it going out to elsewhere? We have again even less tracibilit if you are aquiring horses then feedlot buying then buyingvthem for the plant. So even less tracibility in the case anything goes wrong. In cattle they Exact Records, Name of farm, owners, broker, etc. So complete medical verification. Now they claim drug free which Dunne should know as an attorney is seriously touchy legal ground. He himself cannot prove that the horses are in fact drug free Nor can the Feedlot. The clear fact remains that the horses are in No way tested prior to slaughter. After slaughter they are Only spot testing which doesnt cover All carcasses and therefore doesnt help as proof either. So he stretched himself pretty far on that Unfounded claim. A withdrawal period is a Recommended amount of time withdrawal Should occur. However they have No evidence of what drugs, vaccines, meds, bute etc was given in quantity length of time, or in combination of, how recent or prolonged the issues were that they treated for. Rabies vac has no withdrawal yet they do Not know what horses recieve Rabies Vaccines. The fact is this ploy is one last end run to get open. There is No such thing as thousands of perfectly drug free horses especially when Abosolutely No prior Tests are Run!

  5. If anyone wants to know exactly how little the Canadian government checks for drugs in slaughter horses please contact Sinikka Crosland of http://defendhorsescanada.org. I don’t want to put her email address on here but she can be contacted through the web site. Its being checked in Canada about like it was checked in the US slaughter plants when they were open. They are working there to try to pass a bill that will shut it down too but just like here it is a million dollar business that these slaughter plants don’t want to turn loose of. I signed up last year for the blog so I could keep up with what is going on there.

They deserve to live free from torture and barbaric killings. Stop horse slaughter, stop all horse round ups. stop the helicopter beaters and killers. Stop horse transport all across the world. Save our wild horses, keep them free. This is the year of the horses. protect them and save them.

  7. I think it’s kinda frightening that this guy might actually start up a business that could pollute the neighborhood. Both the air and water. What about contamination from blood, and the drugs that might to might not be within that blood.

De Los Santos basically said he didn’t care if the paperwork was in order cause he was opening shop on Jan 1. Where I live it’s called thumbing your nose at the law.

Honest I hope AG King is able to stop Valley Meats. If Washington can’t or won’t–AG King is fine with me.

So I recommit to the pledge (and why not its a new year!)to not buy or eat red meat till the ranchers start sharing resources. And my own personal pledge since I visit WY., to not do business in the Rock Springs area till the ranchers and BLM start sharing resources! That means no gas, no food, no tourism dollars. They may get a cut of state taxes from my stay in WY but I won’t contribute knowingly…

  8. It is politically much safer to promote Horse slaughter RIGHT BEFORE RETIREMENT:
    http://www.equineadvocates.org/EquinesBlog/?p=847

 Senator Max “Tipsy” Baucus (D-MT) – After a well-publicized drunken rant on the Senate floor, followed by his announcement to retire from the US Senate, Max Baucus has nothing more to lose. Consequently, he is pouring a lot of his energy into bringing horse slaughter back to the US.
