The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is hoping the public can help identify those responsible for the shooting deaths of two wild burros, west of Phoenix, Ariz.

BLM Spokesperson Pamela Mathis said federal officers received a call that two mature wild burros were found dead of apparent gunshot wounds on Jan. 26. Officers believe the shooting took place in the Lake Pleasant Herd Management Area located northwest of Phoenix, Mathis said.

If convicted, those responsible could face a fine up to $2,000 and/or up to one year in prison for each offense, Mathis said.

Anyone with information about the shootings should call 800/637-9152, Mathis said.

All calls are confidential.

  1. What a scam job! Is this just for show? Yeah, right they aren’t going to prosecute anyone. This is all for show to make it look like they care so much. They are probably delighted because its just two more they won’t have to capture and move. I wouldn’t believe a thing this department has to day. They probably hired someone to kill them. Fat chance on prosecuting the folks that did this. I love those burros.

  4. This happened last year in the same area (two foals died as well without their mothers). The entire area is an open shooting range (been there quite a few times). As sad as it is, the donkeys could have been behind a bush or out of eyesight and been an accidental victim. I went camping in the area with a group of horse riders. Woke up one morning to what sounded like an explosion. Think someone shot a propane tank. There are no rules, no guidelines, and you can shoot whatever you want (including propane tanks, but thats just stupid). No one cleans up after themselves either.

  5. I also want to add this is in the Lake Pleasant area of arizona, so there are people there ALOT and ALOT of shooters, its the only free shooting range in the area. The only “rancher” in the area lets a herd of his broodmares run loose. There is not a lot of them and he only rounds them up to take the foals and breed them again (know a gelding that came from that stock, nice horse).

  6. I also live in the Phoenix metro area and have to agree that there are a lot of yahoo type shooters in this area (and I am also a gun owner). “Oh what fun to use two burros for target practice.” There will be no prosecution. Period. Local law/wildlife enforcement doesn’t care. The matter will fade because all the wildlife people hate the burros because they can be destructive of the fragile habitat in that area. I agree this is a problem, but I sure as hell don’t agree that it’s okay to shoot them or harm them in any way.
