“Other zoos across the country have found that purchasing beef, bred for slaughter, is not only economical but much more healthy for the zoo animals versus imported horse meat which is riddled with drugs that can have a serious impact on animals that feed upon it…yet Albuquerque’s Bio Park continues to import tainted horse meat from Canada because, “We been doing it for 10 years.” Well just because ya’all have been ignorant for 10 years doesn’t mean that you can’t learn a new trick or two…come on, people!!!” ~ R.T.
ALBUQUERQUE — Many New Mexicans fought hard to keep a horse slaughtering plant out of the state, but there is proof slaughtered horses are ending up in the state anyway.
KOB learned the Albuquerque BioPark would like to purchase 38,000 pounds of horse meat, but it’s something they’ve done for at least 30 years using taxpayer money.
The zoo spent $65,000 each year in most recent years, and defended the use of horse meat even though the average person has no idea the zoo uses it, and animal welfare advocates question just how dangerous the horse meat is.
“Is that true?” asked zoo visitor John Wright. “Yuck.”
Monday, Albuquerque put out a “request for bid” for 38,000 pounds of meat, hoping for a bidder in the next few weeks. The meat would be used over the next year.

OK Folks just exactly who is caring for them? What a fricking lame excuse. Are people aware of the fact that zoos many times sell surplus animals? The citizens of New Mexico should be outraged! This in a way has brought to light another piece that should be added to the amendment. I was under the impression that American zoos stopped feeding the animals horse meat years ago. However, now it surfaces that it still is continuing. Everyone needs to call this zoo. If tax payers dollars are used to purchase the meat, people need to complain and boycott the zoo. If the zoo is like many around the country, they depend on various types of memberships to keep and maintain the zoo. The truth always has a way of coming to the surface too.
How many young and fit horses were slaughtered here? Hummmm…are the Europeans finally getting the message about American horses? Could there be a decline in sales here? So now that we know its dangerous for humans let’s feed it to the animals!
