The European Union (EU) is close to imposing a ban on the import of horse meat from Mexico.

The director of the Food and Veterinary Office of the European Union Commission, Michael Scannell, revealed that a ban was close when he addressed the recent European Parliament’s Intergroup meeting in Brussels.

He also voiced concerns around some of the serious welfare issues identified around the long-haul transport of horses from the United States to Mexico, saying some animals arrived dead or unable to stand.

He also revealed that stricter conditions would make it harder for Canada to export meat to Europe that was derived from horses imported from the US…(CONTINUED)

  2. This is the best news! They intend to ban Mexican horse meat and restrict Canadian which appears to be the beginning of the end of horse slaughter of American horses including wild horses. Animal Angels are just that. In case you have not seen Linda Horn’s Solutions List which she prepared for New Mexico but can be expanded for any area here is the link which relates to help for excess horses. https://www.facebook.com/notes/linda-horn/solutions-to-the-excess-horse-dilemma-none-of-which-involve-slaughter/618182988215863

And of course there will be a need to start some form of punitive action against the over breeders in some manageable way. We need to remind sources of excess horses that euthanasia means peaceful death and that it is a requirement as an end to any horse’s life.

  3. When I first started learning about the breed incentives–you know breeders would get money for every foal they put on the ground. Talk about glut!

I remember saying that those same breeders needed the same incentives to NOT breed till we got a handle on the horses already on the market.

If a breeder can show that they backed off trying to help bring numbers under control then yes, I think they deserve to keep their breeding incentives. If a breeder shows that they don’t care, glut or otherwise maybe we need to visit that on a case by case situation.

Say you have a breeder who breeds and breeds BUT they take good care of their horses (I’m thinking of Zenyatta)I believe that yes they can keep breed incentives. Someone else who breeds and dumps horses at auction–glut on glut we need to examine that.

In any event kudos to the EU for doing something that Washington refuses to acknowledge and do anything about.

    • Honestly – is there nothing to be done for THESE horses? I am assuming that if they weren’t under the BLM’s “control” – they also wouldn’t have been branded? Is that right? If no brands – cant prove they were wild? So the state (or whatever) can just send them off to Mexico!

      • Dear Maggie it is so horrible knowing this and not being able to stop or help them ……………………..Isnt this illegal ?????????? no matter what kind of horses that are on that truck headed for , certain horrible death for which they are innocent !!!!!!

    • OMG, has anyone called Animals’ Angels USA? They have investigators and volunteers that will document this to prove to the world that the BLM is the lying sack of S that does not give one hoot for the welfare of our wild horses…. Wild horse meat is very desirable because it is advertised as “organic”, “untainted”, “natural”, “lean” meat. Canada is having this same problem with their wildies being lured on to private ranch land, captured and then sold live or dead to China Markets. We’ve been investigating these ads, from this proclaimed horse ranch breeder that uses wild horses in his breed program. Contact AA USA with your info on this mustang to slaughter truck load. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Animals-Angels-USA/79683428354

      • Yes, I have contacted BLM and sent AA a note of what transpired. This is not a perfect world. The information was gained during a casual conversation between two truckers on the road in Kansas. There was a confrontation. BLM’s wild horse specialist is at a meeting with the local Beef marketers. I sent my message to AA. All the information gained was before the driver of the transport knew he was talking to someone who was against slaughtering wild horses. When he found out, he became angry, the witness couldn’t get the identifying plates or DOT#. But did get a photo.

  5. They are very cautious about using the word “ban” as it is permanent and could bring lawsuits regarding international trade laws. At this point they are calling it a moratorium which is temporary, until the plants comply with standards set by the EU. Let’s see what they do with it before we actually praise them..

  6. Shared with: Good news all Horse Warrior Front Lines (including Wild Horse Warriors)! Europe is close to banning the export of horse meat from MEXICO. This will end the long, tortuous and terrifying long hauls of our USA horses to the South. We must continue to work on the SAFE Act which will end the export of our USA horses for the purpose of slaughter world wide which means no more shipping to CANADA or in the case of the wild BLM burros, no transports to Guatemala either!

  7. Please post the info about the horses enroute to Mexico. What salevdid they go thru or who sold them to the “Killers.”. As horse Advocates if these statements are made we need the facts not heresay. This is the only way will be able to stop this. I do not live out there where this is happening. How about license plates, pictures of trailers or any other facts. This is the only way our Legislators can do inquiries. If the Legislators in your state support this, others dont. My Legislators will listen and act. However, they need the facts to support the claims.

    • I’ve looked all over this morning and I could not find this info about the horses being sent from Wyoming either. Not saying it isn’t so I just cannot find it.

  8. This is good news is because if Canada eventually refused to allow US horses to cross the border for slaughter I always wondered how Mexico could be shut down too. If it was only Canada that shut off the pipeline we would still have Mexico to deal with but since the EU went after Mexico first that takes care of that mess. There are many folks working in Canada to shut down horse slaughter so this is one step closer to stopping it. This is also going to put a number of the kill buyers out of business unless they want to pay for driving their loaded trucks all the way from Texas, New Mexico and numerous other south western states all the way to Canada. That will put a deep dent in their bottom lines because of the cost of fuel. Take Mexico out of the picture and the kill buyers that bought horses in all of these states to easily move them to Mexico will be shut down.

  9. COLUMBIA DAILY TRIBUNE

Congress must act to protect wild horses (An online service is needed to view this article in its entirety)

Editor, the Tribune: This is an open letter to Sens. Roy Blunt and Claire McCaskill

I previously wrote to you expressing concern about the Bureau of Land Management’s mismanaging of American mustangs that it is supposed to protect. Currently, about 50,000 wild horses- once called “symbols of freedom” by Congress- languish in permanent, unsheltered holding pens. The round-ups are cruel, with atrocities visited upon foals, older horses and pregnant mares that cannot keep up the furious pace set by low-flying helicopters terrorizing them. After capture, they face a questionable future.

The letter I wrote to you explaining my concern was ignored – as are others – unless we belong to special interests or can be used against the “other party.”

The SAFE Act, which prohibits slaughter of American horses for food, sits in committee with a promise from a high-ranking Republican that it won’t come up for a vote. A high-ranking Democrat has declared his intention to “zero out the herd” to accommodate a deal with China. America has room on our public lands for the horses and the Chinese deal: How dare you disregard the will of the American people who are overwhelmingly against the slaughter of our horses?

The American people want our horses running free. Without horses, this country couldn’t have been settled and wars would have been lost. In my America, the will of the people drives the actions of the government- not the will of those with money.

  10. Bear in mind the Free Trade Agreement was designed to Allow only Safe and Economic trade however Horse Slaughter protectionists want to suggest it IS safe. So this is great news of restrictions but keep an eye on Free Trade Argument and possible litigation. Proving the meat IS dangerous would Exclude them from Free Trade so thats where a counter suit would have to be filed to prove the Dangers for it to be Omitted indefinitely causing a ban to be recognized ulrimately closing the Argument Indefinitely.

  11. I’m so happy to hear that this is getting closer to ending. All of these horse trading idiots and anyone else that thinks we need the slaughter houses need to get back to school. A large number of unwanted horses come from people that need to be educated before owning a horse. These people that think I have an uncut colt and a mare so let’s have a “cute little baby ” are a big issue. Not every horse born is breeding quality. That is where a lot of the problem starts is from the clueless not the horses it’s not their fault so why should they pay?!
