R.T. Fitch’s life has been anything but ordinary. Straight out of high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force Band during the Vietnam era, and while stationed in Hawaii, he spent weekends at Sea Life Park training penguins, sea lions, and whales. His path through life has taken many unexpected turns—including more than a few lessons in love—until meeting his wife, Terry, brought a lasting partnership and a shared passion for animals.
Over the course of his adult career, R.T. worked internationally in multiple countries, gaining a broad, global perspective that colors both his worldview and his writing. Now rooted in Texas, he and Terry live on a small farm surrounded by four-legged companions with paws, claws, and hooves. Together, they have devoted years to equine rescue and wild horse protection.
An ordained volunteer chaplain and professional Santa Claus for a local historical society—with Terry by his side as Mrs. Claus—R.T. brings warmth, wisdom, and joy to every season. His work reflects a life of service, wonder, and connection to both people and animals.
He is the author of Straight from the Horse’s Heart, a moving collection of true rescue stories and spiritual reflections, and Fangs of Light, a supernatural tale steeped in symbolic and metaphorical storytelling. The first in a planned trilogy, Fangs of Light blends myth and mystery to explore themes of identity, redemption, and the power of empathy—offering readers not only suspense and intrigue but a deeper look at the light and shadow within us all.
The BLM agency of our United States government is an eye-sore to the values of our country. The staff of this agency is “lying” to the public and the contracted employees are engaged in acts of blatant animal “abuse.”
Apparently the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has indicated that it is requesting public nominations to fill three national Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board positions, which are set to expire on Jan. 8, 2012. Nominations are for a three-year term and are allegedly needed to represent three categories of interest: wild horse and burro advocacy, veterinary medicine (equine science), and general public interest (with special knowledge of wild horses and burros, wildlife, animal husbandry, or natural resource management). To date, only dedicated special interest personnel have been selected all of which, obviously, do NOT have the best interest of the wild horses and burros in mind.
HOUSTON, (Horseback) – Unconfirmed reports reached Horseback Magazinelate Wednesday that Texas Prison Horses sold at auction in Huntsville recently may be among hordes of starved horses awaiting transport to slaughter at the border town of Presidio.
Chicago (EWA) – The Progressive Rancher Magazine has issued a response to the article in Time Magazine on the Madeleine Pickens proposed wild horse sanctuary. It is ironic that the response accuses equine advocates of “misrepresentations and distortions” of truth but is full of the authors’ own misrepresentations and distorted truth.
This beautiful horse broke out (jumped the panel after capture at the trap) and stood by the jute… moving forward and back… forward and back… as his family loaded.
After the trailer (with his mares) went past him he shot up the hill behind us… then eyed the trap from the other side of the hill calling to the babies… he moved off as vehicles came in but stopped as a trailer came back up the road… and called to see if his family had come back.
HOUSTON, (Horseback) –All questions regarding 47 wild horses allegedly moved from a holding pasture of the federal Bureau of Land Management and seized from a well known slaughter killer buyer are now being referred by the agency to federal law enforcement..

It is a loosely written rule that articles and stories published to our blog on Sundays are to be inspirational and, with any luck, uplifting. If things go well in the world of equine advocacy a good news story will pop up in the press or, better yet, a kind reader will forward some little jewel that is a perfect fit for the special Sunday slot. For the past several weeks, no such good news has been forthcoming and the Straight from the Horse’s Heart blog has gone dark on the last day of the week.
HOUSTON, (Horseback) – The secretive federal Bureau of Land Management has long kept the doors of the giant taxpayer funded pastures where thousands of wild horses are warehoused, well, closed.
HELPER, UTAH — Federal agents impounded 47 Bureau of Land Management horses Friday at the Port of Entry in Helper, preventing the likelihood of the animals being hauled by truck for slaughter in Mexico, officials said.
