LAS VEGAS — Any wild horse advocates who were hoping for big changes when the Texas cowboy president gave way to the urbanite from Chicago have been sorely disappointed. During the past four years, the number and pace of wild horse roundups have seemingly increased.
September 19, 2012 (Hitchcock, TX) – The Texas Parks and WIldlife Department signed an agreement today that releases the few remaining horses currently used at the Big Bend Ranch State Park to Habitat for Horses. In an effort to reduce the number of horses and further reduce expenditures to conserve the park resources, an agreement was reached that allows Habitat for Horses to receive the horses and bring them to its ranch in Hitchcock, TX.
Controversy and outrage can be heard across Lubbock after the American Museum of Agriculture had two mules euthanized for a local exhibit.
Museum board members released a statement on Monday saying the mules will be part of the McCormick reaper display. “After an exhaustive but fruitless search for preserved, exhibit-quality animals, one of our board members learned that an area horse and mule trader had purchased a pair of mules that would fit our needs. According to the owner, the animals had reached the advanced ages of about 28 and 32, respectively, and were no longer sound or strong enough for normal use.”

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — I read the recent cover story about the proposed horse slaughter plants in the U.S. (Agweek, Aug. 27) To say the plants are having problems getting opened is an understatement.
Several prominent New Jersey horse owners and advocates, including accomplished equestrian Jessica Springsteen (daughter of musician Bruce Springsteen) have joined the the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) in supporting a state ban on the slaughter, transport, and sale of horses for human consumption by submitting a letter to Gov. Chris Christie urging him to sign this critical legislation into law.
Chicago (EWA) – The Equine Welfare Alliance (EWA) and Respect4Horses are holding a press conference that will feature sponsors and presenters from the International Equine Conference (IEC). The press conference will be held at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) campus in the Stan Fulton Bldg. on Friday, September 21, 2012 at 11 A.M.

Monte McNaughton, a PC MPP, tore into the Liberals this week at Queen’s Park and placed the blame at Dalton McGuinty’s feet for thousands of horses which could be headed to the slaughterhouse in the event of a horse racing industry collapse in Ontario.
