WASHINGTON, (AWI) – The Animal Welfaree Institute (AWI) applauds Chairman James Oberstar (D-MN), of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, for bringing the Horse Transportation Safety Act (H.R. 305) before his Committee and supporting its swift unanimous passage. “We are especially grateful for the leadership and commitment of the bill’s sponsors Congressman Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN). Both have been incredible champions for the welfare of America’s horses,” noted Christine Sequenzia, AWI federal policy advisor.
Every once in a while, I come across a blog or comment that is just so ludicrous that it has to be shared. This is small blog that is very much content with posting comments to themselves. Rarely will you see more than a few comments and it’s always the same three people. I periodically check to see what new tales they have concocted. Since we know the slaughter proponents are trying to make light of the drug issue, this one caught my eye.
Yesterday morning I sat at the computer and just could not bring myself to write anything, not one blinking word. Day after day we have been battered with the bad news of the BLM violating the law and decimating the few remaining wild horse herds while diabolical mental misfits sit in the wings and smack their lips at the chance of getting the horses on their BBQ. I was so distraught that I actually phoned a seated board member of a much respected equine advocacy group to voice my concerns long before the sun was up and still the keyboard remained silent. All of you valued readers just deserved some good news for a change.
CHICAGO, (EWA) – On June 23, 2010, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Elko District office buried on its website a notice that approximately 175 “abandoned, domestic, estray” horses located within Pilot Valley, NV, were scheduled for impoundment beginning June 25. The round up was expected to take 3 – 4 days with corrals set up on nearby private land owned by Simplot Land and Livestock until the horses could be transported and placed under the jurisdiction of the State of Nevada.
I do not know why you have asked me to speak here today, nor do I understand what object you have asked me to represent in the celebration of your Independence Day. You celebrate freedom and justice, reflected in your Declaration of Independence, but that paper does not apply to me, or to any other animal that shares this earth with you.
CHICAGO, (EWA) – Since the 107th Congress (2001), equine welfare advocates across the country have been trying to get elected officials to pass legislation to ban the slaughter of American horses. Polls have consistently shown that the legislation has the support of 70% of Americans, but without fail the bills have been stalled, blocked with secret holds, and left off the legislative calendars. Now it appears the European Union (EU) and Canada may stop horse slaughter before Congress.
Many of you have contacted us on how to help with passage of the legislation in Canada. I wanted to get direction from CHDC before sending information because as many of you know, sometimes outside influence can hurt more than help. I received the below from our partners, CHDC, on who to contact and direction on the focus.
Your concern for neglected horses is touching. Unfortunately, your pseudo-sympathetic display falls woefully short of championing horses’ rights to live out their natural lives in peace; after being used up by the rich,”horsey” set, which overwhelming dumps their equine family members when they become too expensive, too old or can’t sire “winners.”
