The Perfect Time to End the Slaughter of American Horses

At the moment, the news is rife with stories about the level of equine neglect in the United States, with many of the articles blaming the “unintended consequences” of closing the US horse slaughter plants and calling for them to be reopened. But in reality, we are coming up on a once in a lifetime opportunity to get rid of this abominable practice once and for all. To understand this apparent paradox, one needs to get past unsubstantiated myths to the real forces at play in the market.

BLM Says Dead Foal at Twin Peaks Not Shot

On Aug 17th federal officials released a report stating that the holes in the carcass of a young foal found by wild horse advocates probably came from scavenger birds and not gunshot wounds.

Two days after the remains were found by concerned U.S. citizens a vet from the U.S. Agriculture Department’s Animal Plant Health Inspection Service examined the carcass and stated that the cause of death could not be determined due to advance stages of decomposition according to BLM spokesperson Jan Bedrosian.

Equine Welfare Advocates Spend Week in DC Lobbying Respect 4 Horses

WASHINGTON DC – (July 2010) Respect 4 Horses attempts to represent all injustices against horses equally. The two main legislative issues H.R. 503 (S727) and H.R. 1018 (S1579), but also H.R. 305 (horse transportation safety act) and the PMU industry problems and breeding industry problems. Our motto is to kill many flies with one swatter while we are at it. We would like to see all grassroots factions pull together in order to gain three times the power against the enemy. Click (HERE) for article: “One time, Two times, Three times the Power”. During lobbying trips however we mainly represent the two main issues.

BLM’s Bob Abbey Dances with the Truth and Drops the Ball AGAIN

Today, Director Bob Abbey, Director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued a statement which in a nutshell says that the “BLM’s goal is to enable healthy horses and burros to thrive on public lands”. In the real world I would love to believe those words but the reality of the matter is that the statement is as far from the truth as is the freedom of 38,000 wild horses held in pens with no hope of living out their normal lives.

A Slick In The Night

We keep hearing the upsetting stories from our wild horse advocates living in Nevada near the BLM wild horse holding facilities about wild horses being hauled in the middle of the night and disappearing. We hear it often.

Ignorance is Bliss When the Subject is Horse Slaughter

Every once in a while, I come across a blog or comment that is just so ludicrous that it has to be shared. This is small blog that is very much content with posting comments to themselves. Rarely will you see more than a few comments and it’s always the same three people. I periodically check to see what new tales they have concocted. Since we know the slaughter proponents are trying to make light of the drug issue, this one caught my eye.

BLM: “We are not the Bureau of Horses”

ITHACA, NY (ALC) – The BLM had temporarily suspended its Tuscarora roundup of wild horses initiated in the intense summer heat just days ago on July 10, 2010.

BLM halted the roundup after public outcry over the deaths of horses now said to number 12 including 3 foals.

Based on BLM’s representation the roundup would not begin again until Sunday, July 19, 2010, the judge set a hearing yesterday, July 14 on a motion for restraining order filed by plaintiff Laura Leigh to delay the roundup until August and compel BLM to allow access to the roundup by the media and the public. The judge explained that he was then informed regardless, BLM Director Bob Abbey had issued an order for an “emergency” roundup of the horses prior to the hearing.

Horse-Eaters Continue to Spread Rumors and Lies

This is yet another attempt by Wallis to stereotype everyone that believes that animals should be treated humanely as animal terrorists. Since when does compassion for animals make you a terrorist? We are not rushing into feedlots and pulling out horses or livestock in the dead of night. We are not burning down auctions, feedlots or trucks. We are not threatening anyone’s lives. We are advocating for the welfare of animals through print and phone calls. Yes, we’ve had several peaceful rallies for the wild horses but that is far from destructive, violent protests. If anything, those that wish to harm animals are the individuals that start name calling and threatening us. One only has to read the comments on articles to see who is out of control and can’t have a civil conversation. One only has to read Sue Wallis’ comments.
