BLM to Resume Contested Wild Horse Stampede in Nevada

“Curiously, these wild horses were surviving on the range and only died at the hands of the BLM after being captured,”

“The Management of SFTHH does not agree with comments made by the BLM, here!”

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management will resume a roundup of wild horses about 150 miles northeast of Reno on Sunday, nearly two weeks after a federal judge temporarily halted it due to foaling season.

With the end of foaling season Saturday, BLM officials said, they plan to begin removing about 200 horses from the northern portion of the Jackson Mountains Herd Management Area.

U.S. District Judge Howard McKibben on June 20 granted part of a temporary restraining order sought by horse protection advocates who say the BLM’s own rules prohibit helicopter roundups during foaling season.

He allowed the roundup to continue in the southern portion of the Jackson Mountains because BLM had proven an emergency due to drought. An emergency roundup there began June 8 and ended June 22 with the removal of 424 horses.

But he said that emergency didn’t stretch to the northern half of the target area covering a total of more than 400 square miles east of the Black Rock Desert. He said no helicopters could be used there at least until foaling season ended June 30.

The rest of the roundup in the southern portion of the Jackson Mountains is expected to last about two weeks.

The roundup, which will involve the use of a helicopter to drive horses for miles to corrals, is needed because of a lack of forage and water on the range due to the drought, BLM officials said.

“Gathering the remainder of the excess animals in the northern portion will greatly assist the rangelands from a forage and water standpoint and will reduce the competition among the wild horses, permitted livestock and wildlife,” said Gene Seidlitz, BLM Winnemucca District manager.

Horses removed from the range are taken to the BLM’s Palomino Valley center north of Reno, where they’re put up for adoption or sent to long-term pastures in the Midwest.

The roundup in the southern portion of the Jackson Mountains resulted in the “gather-related” death of only one horse and the “non-gather-related” deaths of six horses due to pre-existing health conditions, BLM spokeswoman Heather Jasinski said.

“We put them down in the field at the trap site or temporary holding corrals,” she said, adding another three horses died after being transported to the Palomino Valley facility.

Anne Novak, executive director of California-based Protect Mustangs, said the animals probably would be alive today had they not been rounded up.

“Curiously, these wild horses were surviving on the range and only died at the hands of the BLM after being captured,” she said. “We want transparency and request that all deaths be counted as roundup-related when they die or are euthanized within 30 days of the roundup.”

The helicopter roundup puts pregnant mares and tiny foals “seriously at risk,” Novak added.

“Just because it’s July 1 doesn’t mean foals aren’t being born,” she said. “Running foals with delicate hooves for miles is inhumane … Helicopter roundups are terrible. They traumatize the wild horses when they stampede them for miles.”

Nevada is home to about half of the estimated 37,000 wild horses on public lands in 10 Western states.

  1. Damn them. I have always said that most of the deaths would not have occurred had the BLM just left the horses in their natural habitats. Of course deaths occur, but they are not caused by man. Why can’t they just leave them alone? I know I am spitting in the wind, but have to vent anyway.

  2. I hope everyone was able to watch “Wild Horses and Renegades” on the Documentary Channel last night. R.T. was involved in financing and it was well done overall. There are extremely graphic scenes; I had nightmares last night. I’m way too empathetic with horses; I cried many times, both at their beauty and at the absolute unending cruelty of humans.

  3. After watching Wild Horses and Renegades last nite , I thought there would be such a stink about the BLM and their actions this morning ????? I also cried through most of it for many reasons, but the most important reason is the Horrible treasonous treatment to Our Wild Beautiful Mustangs who like us their most important reason for being is Family !!!!! Another one is THEIR is no Government Agency that should ever think they are above the Law. It is a Hitler Mentality that should never be tolerated here in America, I was hoping that this morning there would be such a upheaval of American People to take the BLM down……………………… Also emailed the AnimalPlanet and ask them to AIR WILD HORSES and RENEGADES………………..

  4. Why is the BLM doing this when in fact, their services could be better used joining the fight against the terrible forest fires in Colorado? Seriously, federal employees inflicting inhumane treatment on wild horses, while fire fighters are dying trying to put out the massive fire that threatens human life. Our government has gone insane and is blind to the wishes of the majority of Americans who oppose this roundup. Makes me sick.

  6. So there is no water emergency in the north, which is the reason they went into this HMA in the first place and now Gene says it’s to reduce competition with wild horses and livestock, but zero livestock were ordered to be removed. So, really what Gene is saying is we can do whatever we damnplease and remove horses whereever whenever we want. And we don’t care about running foals to their death or anything else. It is only about eradicating wild horses from their lands and letting cattle roam free. Cattle headed to the slaughterhouse that really don’t need to roam wild and free. We are giving animals with a very short lifespan wild horse protected lands-horses that form tight family bonds, horses that have lived on this land for millennia and know how to survive, horses that live for 20-30 years. Wild Horses are the animals that have to go to the cattle feedlots and cattle pasturelands in the midwest, but the cattle can stay and roam wild and free for their very short life?? Gene is the archetype of white man who speaks with forked tongue. Actually the entire agency is. Nothing has changed since the days of Custer.

  7. The “Drought Management” plan is the current strategy for removing America’s Wild Horses and Burros from their LEGAL Herd Management Areas:

Public Comment on Battle Mountain District Drought Management Plan
Does the BLM consider CUMULATIVE effects of all of the uses of water? Quickly adding up just the few uses above, just these few mines use about 18,000 gallons of water per minute (and possibly over 50,000 gallons of water per minute with dewatering). But the BLM frets over the 15 gallons of water a day that a wild horse drinks and claims wild horses are “degrading the range?”

  8. of course eradicating the horses from their legal domain will …”reduce the competition among the wild horses, permitted livestock and wildlife,” because mustangs will be zeroed out. The cows stay. Once again their land is stolen. Once again the BLM gets away with murder. Once again no justice in sight. Once again people won’t make a stand for the mustangs en masse by blocking trap pens or disrupting stampedes. They are after all, stealing our property, using our tax $ for genocide.Extinction is forever. ….NV will be a toxic wasteland from the “stewardhship” of the extractionists, may it burn to the ground, cows and all.

  9. To date, there still have been NO STAMPEDE OF SUPPORTERS on the steps of the capital in
Washington, DC. If other groups can gather people and bus them in from all areas of the country
why can’t we? I’m sure that there are people who would love to share the lodging once they got
there. Again, I wish the gal from the wild horse group would put another one together…This bunch
in Washington needs to see that we will go arm and arm to protect our horses..This is an election year and everyone seems to be vocusing on a limited number of issues…how many seats are up in the Western states, does anyone know? We need to be more vocal and active, also callling some of these district judges on the carpet..If those who are running have fund raisers some advocates should be going – show your faces…I live in Illinois – trust me if the airfare was cheap enough or my funds were unlimited, I would there..

  10. There are so few horses left in all of these areas that you would need to fly for hours just to spot one lone small family band. I’ve seen photos of all of the acres of empty land behind the helicopter and you can’t believe a government agency would do something like this. To round them up to extinction and fight to the death in court to keep doing it.
