(CNN)Nestle is suspending deliveries of all its products that include beef from a German supplier because “traces of horse DNA” were found in the meat, the Swiss-based food giant said on its website Monday.

Nestle also is recalling two chilled pasta products, Buitoni Beef Ravioli and Beef Tortellini, from store shelves in Italy and Spain, the news release said. A lasagna product sold to French catering businesses will also be recalled.

“Our tests have found traces of horse DNA in two products made from beef supplied by H.J. Schypke,” the statement said. “The levels found are above the one percent threshold the UK’s Food Safety Agency uses to indicate likely adulteration or gross negligence.”

The company said there are no food safety issues and it had notified the authorities.

H.J. Schypke is a subcontractor of JBS Toledo N.V., a Belgian supplier.

Unauthorized horse meat has been discovered in a variety of products labeled as beef that were sold in supermarkets in countries including Britain, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany and Ireland.

Also on Monday, the French government lifted a suspension tied to the production of minced meat, sausages and ready-made meals at Spanghero. The French firm will still not be allowed to stock frozen raw meat.

Spanghero should have known that the meat it labeled as beef was actually horse, French Consumer Affairs Minister Benoit Hamon has said.

Spanghero was the first company to label the meat as beef, the minister said, adding that 750 tons of horse meat were involved over a period of at least six months.

Spanghero should have identified the meat as horse from its Romanian customs code, as well as its appearance, smell and price, he said.

A Spanghero representative has told CNN the company had acted in good faith. “The company has never ordered horse meat, and we never knowingly sold horse meat,” the representative said.

The affair has been passed to the Paris prosecutor to be investigated as fraud, Hamon said. The offense is punishable by up to two years in prison and fines of up to €187,500 (about $250,000) for the companies involved.

Meanwhile, UK Environment Secretary Owen Paterson met with representatives of food businesses to talk about the response to the horse meat scandal.

“I welcome the food businesses’ commitment to testing their products. They all assured me that they will not rest until they have established the full picture. There is still much to be done to find out exactly how this happened and how it can be prevented from happening again, and to do everything possible to reassure consumers about the food on our shelves,” he said in a statement after the meeting.

Paterson said the representatives “agreed to do their level best to report back as many testing results as possible” to the Food Standards Agency by Friday.

Separately, the agency told CNN that it has no information to suggest donkey meat is in the food chain.

The meat industry was first thrust into the spotlight last month when Irish investigators found horse and pig DNA in hamburger products. The discovery of pig DNA in beef products is of particular concern to Jews and Muslims, whose dietary laws forbid the consumption of pork products. Jewish dietary laws also ban the consumption of horse meat.

  1. Biuttoni brand is big around here…how do we know that these same packages are not sitting on a Walmart shelf right now here is Florida? Does our USDA inspect products like these at all? If not I suggest they start and forget about spending money on US Horse Slaughter facilities and their inspections and inspectors.

With human health at risk I can’t see why our Legislators would even consider legalizing this barbaric business. I try at all cost never to use this word but this whole situation in our country is simply STUPID! Our Congress is STUPID…okay now I’ve said it.

  5. I totally agree with you Steve, but it’s beyond stupid and it prices that these legislators are all about the money. Food safety, common decency don’t even enter into the picture. Look how they’ve set the wild horses and burros up! It also angers me that these food producers keep telling people that this poised no health risk….anything to keep people buying their garbage. There’s no hope for the PSAs because their brains don’t work..all they see is the money. These greedy groups are going to compromise the meat industry in thus country. I used to think it would be through competition but now i believe that is through food safety. I’m off meat, that’s all to it. It’s just disgusting.

  6. Does any one else find the responses from government and industry officials regarding self regulation, testing and “not a health or safety problem” more than just a little troubling?????

Their comments are completely unacceptable and show that they just don’t get it!

    • When I saw that tonnage number, I tried to do the math and it broke my heart. 1.5 million pounds of horse meat – just in 6 months! and just at one plant! – means 1500 to 2500 1000-pound horses were butchered!

Buitoni is here too. How much would it cost, and where would I send it to have a few packages of these products snatched from Walmart DNA tested?

  7. And the lies and the rhetoric continue…I stopped eatting meat a long time ago. If you ever see what goes on in these slaugther houses people would stop eatting meat. I can see where criminals could sneak this in the product. American people better wake up because “its coming to a store near you”
And all of you are absolutely right its a game of money and greed. As we read more it doesn’t seem to far fetched to see it happen here if it has not done so. Unreal…some of our grocery stores don’t seem to have a clue. When I was in Aldis, I spoke to a gal and she said she did not hear anything from the corporate. I thought to myself she wouldn’t until a customer would find it. Lets see what is going to happen in the next saga. Perhaps I should buy some meat and have it tested. Wouldn’t that be a bit if it came up positive. I see it all coming back to the US…Perhaps this will be God’s way of giving our equines a leg up!

  8. Cattle displace our American Mustangs on our land however, our American Mustangs displace the beef in the burger. Really, in a global market nothing is safe and why would anyone think America is on the up and up with anything regarding safety when money is at stake. We have long ago been sold to the highest bidder. Almost ALL cancer is man made. Sorry today I gave my horse BUTE. Those that live by the sword shall die by it.

  9. It’s here, just that nobody has tested for it. Complacent Americans won’t demand anything unless somebody dies and they stand to make money from it.
