A horse slaughter plant in New Mexico plans to open soon, which is mobilizing animal welfare advocates to repeat calls for a federal ban on slaughterhouses and horse meat for human consumption. One of these opponents is an 11-year-old boy from Greenland, N.H.
Declan Gregg, who runs the blog Children 4 Horses, keeps tabs on the bills that are in committee on Capitol Hill. He has traveled to Washington three times to fight for the bills, and he and his mother, Stacie, plan to keep pressing the case in 2014.
“It’s not good for the horses, community or public safety,” Declan Gregg said in a phone interview Friday.
Gregg, who was the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Humane Kid of the Year in 2012, continues to fight for the SAFE Act, the Safeguard American Food Exports Act, a version of which was introduced in the U.S. House and Senate. That bill would prohibit the sale or transport of horses or horse parts in interstate or foreign commerce for human consumption.
It is a food safety issue, his mother said, because horses are not raised for slaughter and are routinely given medications that are labeled “not for animals intended for consumption.”
Declan Gregg was inspired to speak out two years ago, when he was 9 and noticed his mother was saddened by the horse slaughter issue. He soon found his voice, and encouraged other children to speak out, as well. He promoted letter campaigns to legislators and spoke before the politicians in Concord and in Washington, D.C.
Today, at 11, he is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, likes drawing and enjoys playing basketball. And he’s a savvy advocate. His family does not own horses, but he says he is fighting for responsible horse ownership…(CONTINUED)

I doubt that Declan’s parents have any worries about his grades or what kind of human being he is (from one of the comments at the article). The fact that he has become so involved in the whole slaughter issue says it all. I give his parents so much credit for a caring, compassionate boy. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, in other words!

he is such a blessing, he can do so much more then adults, I donate all I can to defeat this act, if only our president had a teeny bit of his compassion this would not be happening, RONNIE REAGAN, where are YOU?????

boy ,that john mercier and lloyd clement are just like most ( men that give a crap about nothing it’s this way an nothin else) kind of mind set that got those shady kind of polititions in office . at best they are folks that need to find a reason to live. man o man

I hope others can learn from Declan. He’s obviously been raised well! Horse slaughter is torture, it’s NOT humane and it’s totally unnecessary.

It was Winston Churchill who intervened to secure the safe return of tens of thousands of war horses stranded in Europe after the First World War.
War Office documents found in the National Archives at Kew show that tens of thousands of the animals were at risk of disease, hunger and even death at the hands of French and Belgian butchers because bungling officials couldn’t get them home when hostilities drew to a close.
Churchill, then aged 44 and Secretary of State for War, reacted with fury when he was informed of their treatment and took a personal interest in their plight after the 1914-1918 war.
He secured their speedy return after firing off angry memos to officials within his own department and at the Ministry of Shipping, who had promised to return 12,000 horses a week but were struggling to get a quarter of that number back.
Churchill’s intervention led to extra vessels being used for repatriation, and the number of horses being returned rose to 9,000 a week.

I will bet that both Mercier and Clement are either killer buyers or are friends with a few of them. Because every time any article about horse slaughter pops up in a newspaper creeps like these come out of the woodwork. A few times in the past I have accused them of being killer buyers and as far as I ever knew none of them denied it. The world needs kids like Declan lets hope he grows up and makes it to the White House someday.
